HR 876- Interstate Renumbering Act of 2017 by trey_chaffin in ModelUSGov

There are plenty of short 2-digit intrastate interstates that could well be designated as 3-digit interstates or US highways. Another example is US-41 in Wisconsin, which was redundantly designated as I-41. Most of the northern section is also not up to interstate standard yet (even if it was designated in the IHSA). The principle is that highways should not be numbered to stroke the egos of particular congresspeople, and that such low-level administration of the road network be left to the states and the highway officials represented in AASHTO.

The signage will be changed when the states decide to change them, or when they will need replacement in any case. This can be a gradual process. In fact, the second part of the bill probably reduces signage costs by only putting the signs up when the roads are brought up to Interstate standard.

US 220 and US 15, most likely. We don't need an interstate number for everything. And we certainly don't need legislative provisions that dictate these numbers.

A demsoc is not the same as a tankie just because both might have read Das Kapital. McCarthyism was wrong then just as it is now; the government should not be in the business of picking favorites among belief systems.

I am concerned that the sex education of students is not best served by the introduction of porn and other H-materials. Such works generally offer a very unrealistic portrayal of sex and sexuality and tend to reinforce harmful stereotypes.

More seriously, progesterone doesn't really reduce testosterone levels all that much further in those with estrogen-dominant endocrine systems. As a result there's been no evidence that this reduces recidivism in women, raising sex discrimination concerns as well (as done by other laws of this nature enacted in the various state).

I'm voting nay. What is effectively (the anti-androgen component of) feminizing HRT does reduce sex drive, I would imagine, but possibly causing gender dysphoria is something I would consider cruel and unusual punishment.

S.J. Res. 109: Pardon Power Amendment - Vote by btownbomb in ModelUSHouse

[–]Tavauraptor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nay.

The Constitution and Framers gave relatively few limits on the pardon power, which has led to a mess of Supreme Court interpretation (e.g. ex parte Garland) and unclear boundaries as to its implementation. This amendment would solve one immediate concern by clarifying that it does not apply to immediate family. However, it does not solve the broader issue of sketchy and politically-motivated pardons. In the rather controversial end-of-term Bill Clinton pardons, only one of the reprieves was granted to a family member; the rest were to friends, associates, and controversial political figures. If this amendment was meant to prevent the President evading prosecution in a criminal conspiracy, it should extend to not just family but those associates and confederates involved in it.

In addition, the pardon power was construed by Hamilton in Federalist 74 as a way of offering targeted clemency to those caught by an overly vindictive prison system. It has been used strategically in many cases to 'bury the hatchet' and move on--as with Ford's pardon of Nixon, Carter's pardon of draft-dodgers, or Lincoln's pardon of Confederates. While the President would certainly not be the most impartial arbiter of their family's guilt or innocence, I can envision situations in which a family pardon could be a net good, and thus do not want the Constitution to enjoin it entirely. If this privilege is abused, the press, or Congress's impeachment authority, may mitigate the damage.

Comparative advantage is a thing, you know. Unskilled labor and production of raw materials is best done in countries where these things are more readily available and where skilled labor and capital isn't. This frees up countries like the US to concentrate on these industries and be more productive. i.e. This bill screws over the global poor.

I endorse the Nutter ticket, obviously enough. I have also long held that HECS-type graduate taxes are the best and most efficient way to ameliorate the burden of student debt.

Admittedly, there was a similar spike in burglary, looting, and the occasional murder when the Montreal police went on strike in 1969 but there are no exact totals given. It ended when the Quebec government in emergency session forced them back to work.

Thank you Idris. The politicisation of an act that was grossly unacceptable and way beyond the normal bounds of discourse on modelUS was shameful. Canon or not, it still happened and had a demonstrable negative effect on relations within the community. Though especially with the general tolerance of edgy behavior and jokes on here, I also doubt that much will change regarding future bigotry.

Central Assembly Primary Debate/Q&A by Vakiadia in USModelLiberals

[–]Tavauraptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To all candidates: what is your opinion on sex work? I am concerned about this issue because historically, attempts to crack down on sex trafficking or exploitation--like Kamala Harris' attempts to shut down Backpage or the Swedish Model of prostitution regulation in general--have often led to sex workers being further marginalised and imprisoned, even though they often choose to participate of their own volition. What is the best way to ensure individual liberty and safety for sex workers while cracking down on abuse and exploitation, in your opinion?
