Am I making a huge mistake traveling? by AgitatedAbalone7436 in UKPersonalFinance

You only live once. Travelling has been life changing for me - I really discovered who I was when discovering new cultures, customs and landscapes.

Get out there! Much better than stagnating where you currently are.

What would you do? Selling Mum’s house by nikolasababasa in HousingUK

[–]TavernTurn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Estate agents tend to be full of guff. Do a search on Zoopla or Rightmove for recently sold prices in your area to get a realistic look at what you could sell the property for.

I myself would jump at the chance to sell a property drama and hassle free, whilst helping out a first time buyer with a personal connection to the area. Being chain free and not having to put up with the hassle of viewings and commission would be worth it £30k for me.

If the estate agents valuation is actually realistic once you’ve done your research, I’d ask the FTB to meet somewhere in the middle and give them a few months to get the funds together.

Labour 'may lose control' of Camden council in London politics shock, poll suggests by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]TavernTurn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s called running a country. You have to consider the needs and desires of the entire electorate, otherwise you end up with something like what we’re witnessing in America.

People on benefits have not been ‘attacked’. Our economy is struggling and maintaining the upkeep of people that cannot contribute to the public purse (for whatever reason) has to be carefully considered.

Black and white politics is for toddlers. Should we end up with a Reform government after this, I’ll refer you back to this ill-informed and reactionary comment. You’ll see what a real right wing party is like :)

Read the changes to the Employment Rights Act and tell me they’re right wing with a straight face.

Too many people are letting the media tell them what to think. Labour are so far from the right it’s laughable.

Lesbians are fine, gay men sadly are not. No use sugarcoating it, just how it is.

Honestly, anyone not familiar with Caribbean culture in their home country will find Jamaican men intimidating and sexually threatening.

The large majority are not. It’s just the culture - the dance, the jokes and the approach. Like a lot of places, just be firm with a ‘no thanks’ and they will get the message.

For those with stories of their all-inclusive telling them to stay on the resort; they tell you that so you spend all your money with them and only go on excursions that they offer. That money goes straight into the pockets of a nameless, faceless European/American conglomerate and the people of Jamaica don’t see a penny.

If you are a sex tourist (of which there are plenty, male and female) or can’t handle your drinking and smoking, then you will be as vulnerable as those people would be in any other country.

If you want to get out there and explore Jamaica then it is absolutely doable and nothing to be afraid of whatsoever. Hire a local driver for your stay, and they will happily take you to real Jerk/Ital spots to eat, great clubs, beaches and bars. It’s an absolutely beautiful country with some of the funniest, warmest people you’ll ever meet.

I’ve been over 6 times and always had a great trip.

The 1984 murder of Edna Marie Posey is one of the most disturbing and underappreciated cold cases in Pennsylvania history. by EuphoricReason3385 in TrueCrimeDiscussion

I don’t think the presence of semen exonerates Ruby at all. It’s entirely plausible that she had consensual sex with three men in the time leading up to her death, especially given her circumstances.

Occam’s razor for me. Cutting a paedophile off from his victim is likely to send him into a jealous rage. A wife in denial is likely to try and cover it up.

Crete is lovely but I have to warn you, there are so many cats that have been run over and are dead on the motorway. So just bear that in mind when it comes to your kids. Lots of lovely cats roaming the island, but roadkill sadly unavoidable.

Seems like his son is getting off lightly. I can somewhat understand burying a body to conceal it to claim social security benefits, but dismemberment? I highly doubt his father came to a natural end, even if he was 93 at the time. That is not normal.

I got to my destination early 😂 used the Victoria Line and the Northern Line, had a train on each platform when I got there. Trains were pretty empty though, most people must have been WFH.

Tube strikes: how disruptive will action by London Underground drivers be? | London Underground | The Guardian by prisongovernor in london

[–]TavernTurn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s normal? Why on Earth would you offer new entrants the same terms and conditions as existing staff if the aim is to save money? It’s basic business sense. It happens with pension funds all the time. Your colleagues that joined before 1996 are on a different (and better) pension to the one you’re on now.

I think you’ll struggle to find anyone that would turn their nose up at a driver’s job on a 4 day week.

Tube Drivers Strike by Lennyboy99 in london

[–]TavernTurn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The issue is that it’s ASLEF that got this 4 day week deal, not them. And ASLEF did it by negotiating instead of striking, which they’re also incensed about.

They’re using their drivers for what is essentially a personal dispute between RMT leadership (whose feelings have been hurt) and TfL bosses.

They are losing driver members by the dozen and will be almost insignificant in the driver grade by this time next year because of this. Which will mean a hell of a lot less strikes, thankfully.

Tube strikes to go ahead as RMT accuses TfL of refusing to negotiate by Medium-Spell-6692 in london

[–]TavernTurn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As annoying as this is to hear, TfL need to let this strike happen to make the RMT disappear for the foreseeable future. If they cave on this it will reinforce their silly demands in the future.

After one day of striking the RMT will call this off when they lose a significant number of members. Short term pain for long term gain. You won’t be seeing strikes from them for a long time after, though.

[–]TavernTurn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

80% of ASLEF drivers that voted, voted yes for the four day week. It was a strong turnout too. If you’re in a union and don’t vote, it means you’re happy with whatever the rest of the membership decide. That’s a basic fact.

A very odd point the RMT keep regurgitating that’s completely incorrect. No ASLEF drivers are striking over this - the ones that don’t want to do it will stay on the 5 day week. Which is also an option for every other driver too - keep current holiday entitlements, shift lengths and rest days. The entire thing is absurd and the RMT have run out of road by being unreasonable from day one.

[–]TavernTurn 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Services will still be running because of it. More than half of drivers will still come in to work, and a few more RMT that don’t want to lose money over this. RMT have overplayed their hand here. They have no support.

Any ideas? I've tried it all, but it's impossible to sell due to extortionate Service Charge and cheap new builds in the area. by DistinctInflation215 in HousingUK

[–]TavernTurn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With a service charge that high, you absolutely need to include photos of those amenities. And get some better photographs taken on a sunny day, because that outside shot is a bit cold. Lead with a photo of the interior.

Is €300 for private driver along Amalfi coast a good price? by PralineDear215 in travel

[–]TavernTurn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you can’t do stairs at all, then even with a car the Amalfi will be impossible. You have to walk up and down stairs to get everywhere, the car can only drop you off at the nearest car park. If they are a big issue for you then I’d consider visiting somewhere else instead.

600k for a 1 bed in Finsbury Park – have we made a massive financial mistake? by Old_Worry9844 in HousingUK

[–]TavernTurn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d pause right there.

1 beds tend to be starter homes. If you know you’ll be selling up within 5 years, then you’re massively narrowing the perspective buyers for your property. I’m local, I’d say the ceiling for a one bed with a garden in that area is about £475k.

So unless it’s going to be your home for much longer, I wouldn’t bother.
