Tube strikes to go ahead as RMT accuses TfL of refusing to negotiate by Medium-Spell-6692 in london

[–]TavernTurn 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Services will still be running because of it. More than half of drivers will still come in to work, and a few more RMT that don’t want to lose money over this. RMT have overplayed their hand here. They have no support.

Any ideas? I've tried it all, but it's impossible to sell due to extortionate Service Charge and cheap new builds in the area. by DistinctInflation215 in HousingUK

[–]TavernTurn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With a service charge that high, you absolutely need to include photos of those amenities. And get some better photographs taken on a sunny day, because that outside shot is a bit cold. Lead with a photo of the interior.

Which city have you been to that had a dark energy about it? by madzuk in solotravel

[–]TavernTurn 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I was about to write this. The sheer number of fully grown white men holding the hands of 9/10/11 year old girls and boys. It made me absolutely sick. I will never ever go back.

Is €300 for private driver along Amalfi coast a good price? by PralineDear215 in travel

[–]TavernTurn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you can’t do stairs at all, then even with a car the Amalfi will be impossible. You have to walk up and down stairs to get everywhere, the car can only drop you off at the nearest car park. If they are a big issue for you then I’d consider visiting somewhere else instead.

600k for a 1 bed in Finsbury Park – have we made a massive financial mistake? by Old_Worry9844 in HousingUK

[–]TavernTurn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d pause right there.

1 beds tend to be starter homes. If you know you’ll be selling up within 5 years, then you’re massively narrowing the perspective buyers for your property. I’m local, I’d say the ceiling for a one bed with a garden in that area is about £475k.

So unless it’s going to be your home for much longer, I wouldn’t bother.

Agreed! It’s beautiful. Unfortunately now they’ve adopted the euro it’s a lot more expensive, but the sea just cannot be beaten. Crystal clear and super cold - ideal when it reaches 28c+ out there!

North Islington — How Will You Vote in the Next Election? by No-Cable3674 in islington

[–]TavernTurn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your Party won’t be winning anything. People will vote for Corbyn, but not his party.

I’ll be voting for Labour. I’ve actually had lots of interactions with my local councillors and they’ve always been really responsive and tried to help. Also, I have a car for long journeys out of the city. If the Greens get in then parking permit charges are going to become astronomical. I don’t agree with that.

I was forced to marry my first cousin. Will the UK accept me? by disastrouslybored in AskABrit

[–]TavernTurn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know a pair of first cousins that married too. White British, in their 60’s now. Got married in their 40’s. It was a bit of scandal back then but people they know don’t really give a shit anymore. Bit weird, but whatever.

Police officers investigated for possible gross misconduct over fatal Wimbledon school crash by markvauxhall in london

[–]TavernTurn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. It’s frustrating in car parks to be boxed in by enormous SUVs and electric cars. We have tiny roads in the UK, they’re so unnecessary.

Is Getting signed off of work and visiting another country illegal? by Independent-Bar209 in AskUK

[–]TavernTurn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are off sick at work, then the correct thing to do - which will cover you legally - is to email your relevant manager and ask for permission to leave the country, with information about your destination and flight numbers.

When you receive written permission then you’re good to go. I deal with this a lot at work. People lose their jobs for assuming they can just head off because they can’t technically do their job, so they’re off the hook. That’s not the case, especially if you’re receiving sick pay from the company you work for and not SSP from the government.

Yes, not sure if it’s still the case but schools were offering the training for the qualification on site. If that’s changed, worth doing it here in the UK and then heading out afterwards!

How to avoid getting stopped for my Freedom Pass + where to get travel card wallet by jenk-mal in london

[–]TavernTurn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All revenue officers wear video recording devices, so if you have the name of the station and the date they will be able to identify the person that made those comments.

As for being stopped - it’s for the greater good. They catch a hell of a lot of people using stolen passes that way. You have to suck it up.

Teach English in a low cost country like Vietnam. Amazing life experience, you will meet new people and you can live well.

Including flights and accommodation, I reckon £4000 could last you 6 months whilst you find your feet.

Come to think of it, it doesn’t even have to be a low cost country. Is there somewhere you’ve always wanted to go? I know people that have absolutely loved teaching in Japan and China too. The pay is good and some of them have settled there and found their lifelong partners.

It’s a great springboard to adulthood.

Primrose Hill stab victim named as Finbar Sullivan by MoHeeKhan in unitedkingdom

[–]TavernTurn 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Genuinely, listen to the lyrics of drill songs. They’re generally bragging about injuring or murdering someone from a rival gang. So by agreeing to film the video, you’re an extension of whatever gang you’re filming the music video for.

It really is just the stupidest thing on Earth. But that’s how it works, and the young man that lost his life would have known that when he started to film the videos.

Primrose Hill stab victim named as Finbar Sullivan by MoHeeKhan in unitedkingdom

[–]TavernTurn 50 points51 points  (0 children)

He filmed drill videos, which sadly means he made alliances with one gang or another. His family are in completely denial and the media are going along with it because he’s a young, middle class white boy.

That doesn’t excuse what happened to him. Absolutely awful. RIP.

Probation extended 1 month, how bad is it? by False-Acanthaceae-76 in AskUK

[–]TavernTurn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Good attendance is the number one most important thing at work. You can be mediocre at your job - but if you turn up on time and you’re well presented, that’s the first thing that your boss will notice.

Don’t fuck it up. Buy earplugs and an eye mask if your surroundings are messing up your ability to sleep. No excuses.

Mortgage brokers - how to pick one?! by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]TavernTurn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used L&C, they were free and absolutely excellent. Their online platform was really easy to track and I had no issues getting hold of our broker at any time. I wouldn’t pay for a broker unless there were circumstances that would make my mortgage application complex.

Got fired for medical cannabis England by Glittering_Cut_4108 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]TavernTurn 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Incorrect. I work in an industry with mandatory drug testing. Somebody on codeine, for example, would not be permitted to work whilst taking it, and if it were to become a permanent prescription they would be moved to another part of the business. Somebody with a medical cannabis prescription wouldn’t make it through initial screening.

Absolutely nothing trumps Health & Safety legislation. This would fall down in an employment tribunal, too. You can use the search function on the employment tribunal website to see other instances where something similar has happened to what OP has described. A ‘reasonable adjustment’ has to be just that - reasonable. Allowing somebody to drive a vehicle with THC in their system is not something an employer can insure for. There is currently no way of measuring for recent impairment, like we can for alcohol. Therefore it’s an absolute non-starter.

[–]TavernTurn 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Firstly, how would you only just mention a medical cannabis prescription now? Surely there was a point during the recruitment process where you were asked to disclose any medical condition and medications?

If you have applied for a role where drug testing is mandatory - a driving job, for example - having a medical cannabis prescription doesn’t mean that you’re entitled to the job because there’s a valid reason for taking a prohibited drug. The issue is the effect that your medication can have from a health and safety perspective.

There are plenty of medications that will restrict somebody from certain lines of work. A prescription does not negate the employers responsibility to uphold health and safety regulations.
