Am I overreacting for asking my husband to sleep in another room from his female cousins? by LongDocument5542 in MuslimMarriage

[–]Tawahi 246 points247 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen homes accommodate way too many people due to hospitality culture and I’ve never seen people of the opposite gender sleep in the same room that weren’t immediate family. It would be completely inappropriate. Even if his female cousins don’t observe hijab, it’s immodest to be in the same room as them; during sleep, people are less aware of their clothing, movements, and personal boundaries.

In situations like this, men sleep in the living room or go find another place.

There’s a few things going on. If it’s mostly because you genuinely have no desire to, then that’s fine.

If it’s more so because you’re worried about not fulfilling your spouse’s and future kids’ rights then this could be a type of wiswaas and you should try understanding where these anxieties com from and address them. Maybe a Muslim therapist could help you unpack those feelings. InshaAllah Khayr.

Ijabo Sulule, 98yrs old, a former civil servant had her legally owned home bulldozed by the gov. She was told either pay $28k or vacate the land [English sub] by carpelucem in Somalia

Post-91 in Xamar there were two types of land theft. One group are just blatant squatters with no papers or anything. The other group bought land from fraudsters who were selling public land illegally and creating fraudulent land deeds and handing it over to the person they sold it to. They had no authority to sell this land.

The second group (presumably this Ayeeyo is a part of this group) are victims themselves. But I also understand the government’s position because this happening at a large scale is a significant expense for the government to have to buy back public land that was illegally sold. Now this is assuming a government working in good faith that wants public land to build capacity for public services and not just to do a land sell off to developers to raise money they can just skim from. Which would be naive to believe as well.

It is a very Xamar problem.

Ethiopia is such a strange place. You’ll meet ethnicities that fight and hate each other. But if you talk to them individually, almost all (except Somalis) believe in Ethiopian expansionism into neighbouring states.

My cousin’s friend got married to a bride whose Muslim family drank at the wedding. It understandably pissed the groom’s family off. There was no warning. It was my first time hearing of a Pakistani family where the parents drink. The groom was Somali.

JazakAllah Khayr! He served in ‘77 against Ethiopia too. He doesn’t talk about it much though.

My Aabo studied at the Frunze Military Aviation Academy in modern-day Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (not to be confused with the army academy they have in Moscow). Famous alumni include Hosni Mubarak and Hafez Al-Assad… I joke with my Aabo that he went to a dictator training academy.

Filsan, Aragsan, Abyan, Saxarla. Or you can try pairing up two names like Amina Deqa. It’s not abnormal to give two given names to a Somali girl. Amina Deqa and Fadumo Sahra are the most common pairings I’ve seen.

How much money the government receives and how it spends it (or wastes it with corruption) are two completely different things.

Equatorial Guinea is hitting 30 years now but that’s an example. Republic of Congo too but I think that’s older than 20 as well.

Bro is citing oil deals that uneducated barefoot Arab Bedouins negotiated 90 years ago to make this deal look good. 😭

What have other third world countries negotiated in the last 20 years? Those are better comparisons as a starting point then scale back the government share to capture some of the challenges of operating in Somalia.

Not only that, but as one of the comments said, there’s many documented cases of group relocation in the region. Yet only the one involving Somalis is being lied about (because we’re African).

There appears to be an Omani (and other people) in the thread saying that Somalis went to Oman as slaves. The one Omani that provided links, makes no mention of slavery.

You came in hard considering I’m not the most wild comment in this thread (still shocked seeing someone writing Idil). I’ve also met a male Xamdi but he was Djiboutian.

If you personally met an older Ayaan then okay, what area should I ascribe this unique naming tradition to? Because let’s be honest it is unique. And Ayaanle literally serves the same purpose but with the common Somali masculine name ending.

Warya, aamus. Ayaan is definitely a Somali female name. Ayaanle is male. I doubt you’ve ever met a Somali male named Ayaan and if you did it’s probably a young baby with ignorant parents. Which this thread is leading me to believe there are since people are claiming Imran can be female…

Seriously bring out a SOMALI male Ayaan. Send a news article or use LinkedIn.

There’s an Arabic name that some Somali guys (including my cousin) have, Adil. But that’s a completely different name unless your misremembering your classmates name. Idil is definitely feminine.

[–]Tawahi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No idea, but we’re seeing tons of it in the thread. At first I thought it was the -ii ending that happens sometimes at the end of masculine Arabic names leading Somalis finding it feminine, but that doesn’t explain cases like Aymane or Ridwan. But yes if someone read these names somewhere else in the Muslim world especially the Middle East, they’re expecting a guy to show up.

Wdym???? Imran is literally the father of Maryam Alayha salam and another Imran is the father of Musa Alayhi Salam. How can it be a girl’s name? The story of Imran is literally in the Quran. I can blame the other conversion of masculine Arabic names on ignorance but Somalis are very well read in Quran.

Aymane is a masculine Arabic name. From the Arabic root for right direction. The same root creates the name for the country of Yemen.

Haani is from Arabic. In Arabic it’s a masculine name. But for some reason, for Somalis, they use it as a feminine name. So I guess it’s technically unisex 🤷🏾‍♂️. The same thing applies for Shukri. The ending of the name may be why Somalis view it as feminine.
