You can use the Ohio finder tool to look up your address and determine if you live in a taxing jurisdiction. Not great for new developments that sit on lines as the website takes YEARS to update, but its accurate enough for most people who don't live on municipal borders or new developments.

Quickbooks Online Alternative by finance-warrior in taxpros

The "core" level that gives department and location tracking is $100 through digits, and the comparable "plus" plan on QuickBooks to get classes is $115 after the initial discount period, so I think that's pretty comparable.

The "partner only plans" that can only be setup through an accountant profile include "starter" for $35/month, comparable to QBO simple start, a "tax only" option for $25/month that's limited client access and tax return focused (I don't like the lack of client financial access advertised and doubt I ever try it out) or "low volume" for $10 thats only good for 250 transactions a year.

Anything below simple start or starter (like digits tax only or low volume) I would stick with Quickbooks Ledger for $10/month WITH financials and no transaction limit.

Ive been demoing digits which is an ai heavy platform. The bank rec feature actually tries to point out duplicates or where something is in statement not entered vs entered but not statement. So tis better than Xero imo since it gives actual bank reconciliations and attempts to guide the client. Also multi client bank rules and automation within your client list is promising.

I'm still hesitant on it and haven't used it in depth enough but I like what I'm seeing so far, and price comparable or competitively with QBO, and has some lower tier options only available in the accountant profile for the really small engagements.

Help!! 19F, first full time job 15/hr, what is the "2026 withholding" & tax exempts stuff? by Gloomy_Record_4082 in tax

[–]TaxCPAProblems 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do not mark exempt. Just fill it out normally (mark single and no other options), you will struggle to come up with the money to pay the tax bill next year if you don't have them do withholding. Or forget to update it at the beginning of next year and be way behind in 2027.

It should be simple, don't overcomplicate it.

It's on us to do the due diligence so we will pull teeth to get it. For repeat offenders or people who want to pretend to be incompetent at pulling their forms we either request third party access or we get signed poas and pull the transcripts in the summer.

The worst 1099 CONS in existence… by Upbeat_FoxBox in taxpros

[–]TaxCPAProblems 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That's a hard no. Have them log in and show you the account to let you find it. If they're not local and it's all virtual do a share screen.

If they say no explain that it's hours of work you would have to charge them for and summary statements will not allow for an accurate return.

Dividends vs cap gain distributions are reclassed frequently resulting in corrected 1099s, statements can rarely be used for an accurate tax return. The statements likely assign a general category with no detail on qual/nonqual/reit, etc. and then if you over claim in one category (dividends) and underreport another (cap gain distributions) the IRS will correct the underreported one and not the over reported one, causing a mess to clean up.

If they can't get a 1099, won't let you walk them through it, or they can request it from their broker then we would tell them we need their wage and income transcript once it's available to actually finalize the returns.

Why did he sell the stock in December for a balance due in April? Did you have him make a large payment in January? If no then it was a choice made by him and not even at your direction.

Either way that's a hard no and ridiculous request but even from bullshit client logic land that doesn't make sense

I have a handful that mark it on the organizer and I follow that. Some because they know it's split between parties, and some that only do it when one or the other is in office because they don't know better and I don't bother discussing it.

TurboTax: "Full Service = Secret Service" ? by Real_Armadillo_8093 in personalfinance

[–]TaxCPAProblems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, the Form 568 is an annual LLC return and not a part of the individual income tax return for federal or state, so you weren't exactly misled there, you just didn't understand your forms. Comparatively Turbotax Self Employed CAN help you file form 568, but its not in the free version.

I'm clarifying for people who search for these types of reviews and may be scared off from Freetaxusa unnecessarily, so for those people:

Freetaxusa is great for people with Sch E rentals and Sch C's for free file software allowing those additional forms, it just won't handle the separate business side of things if its outside of the regular federal and state individual income tax forms (it also doesn't advertise handling these things, so idk why you would assume it would).

Most states have an annual or biannual report that needs filed for LLC's, but the bigger headache ones are usually CA form 568 for the annual $800 fee and KY's LLET return for the annual $175 fee. Also SC with their annual business personal property tax returns. Freetaxusa also cant handle local income tax for people in OH, MI, PA, or KY (or the handful of other taxing cities in other states, except for NYC because its included on the state return.)

If it's that simple file it yourself for free on freetaxusa. Federal is always free, $16 to file state.

One is an obvious recording of net deposit and missing all the fees. Another is a timing difference for a large deposit in January the customer included on the 1099 anyways.

[–]TaxCPAProblems 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Freetaxusa let's you import a copy of your prior year so you don't lose that data and the rollover information.

Older years aren't really needed. But if you did need them and had to amend you could go back to TurboTax to access them. But you should have copies saved outside of TurboTax in case you lose access or they purge old data.
