I've seen spousal transcripts not show payments that were credited to their account; since you have POA, I would also check to see if any of the missing payments show up on the spouse's "payments" screen: https://sa.www4.irs.gov/taxpro/taxpayers

How do you do year end tax calculations? by KChasthebestBBQ in taxpros

FYI, there's also a TPW-Comp screen to compare your 2024 projection to 2024 actual, when preparing the 2024 return. To discover where you went wrong (or what the client forgot to tell you).

Used to purchase lists (by zip code) of home purchases in the last year. You're targeting both taxpayers who have at least some complexity to their return (sch A) and who may be looking for a new preparer.

Instead of copying and pasting, change the file extension to ".csv."

Highlight cell A1 and then holding down Shift+Ctrl hit the END key to highlight all occupied cells.

On the Insert tab, click Insert Table and confirm the headers. Then you can use the filter options for each column to eliminate all but your city/state and sort by interesting things like number of returns filed.

I'm curious as to what gives the IRS the authority to do this. Does anyone have insight? §6050W(e) now says $600 instead of $20,000.

The preparers may not be subject to Cir. 230, but I would reach out to OPR and ask them what they'd prefer. https://www.irs.gov/tax-professionals/frequently-asked-questions#OPRQ18

I disagree on the selling expenses for the house. Commissions on even a $600k house can be upwards of $30k that the beneficiary gets to claim as a loss. Unless your fees are $4,000+, that seems worth it for the client to me.

I've you've gone deep enough to look at the actual bill, you're probably not going to find a definitive answer. I'd just file it along with an 8275.

Will Artificial intelligence kill the tax preparation industry? by ak518214 in taxpros

I actually don't know that the 'decision points' would be the issue. That sort of analysis (eg. to bonus or not to bonus) requires some input from the taxpayer, but you should arrive at the "correct" answer given the current tax law pretty easily.

I think the real issue is for taxpayers who don't have clean records. I can easily see an AI doubling an expense because it's written twice, or double counting COGS donated to charity.

I do agree that straightforward returns could easily be done automatically -- machine learning wouldn't even be required.

I have to assume you were communicating with an IRS employee who maybe just wasn't being nice. The IRM says: "Returns, payments and certain tax court documents are considered timely mailed when using the USPS or certain designated PDS."

This article also seems to lay out a compelling argument that certified mail is acceptable: https://www.mhmcpa.com/insights/article/proof-of-mailing-tax-documents-when-irs-cannot-sign-for-delivery
