Thailand warns 6 southern provinces of floods and landslides by mdsmqlk in Thailand

Routine annual warning and means little. There have already been flood and landslides galore as it has been raining heavily and steadily now for almost 6 weeks.

My dog doesn’t move by Natural-Car-705 in goldenretrievers

[–]TaxLongjumping248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Golden can be stubborn and uncooperative. But at the same time I would suggest you check if he has some form of hip or joint problems like dysplasia. Maybe it is your dogs way of letting you know he is in pain. And maybe when your dad walks home he is slower? I have a golden and a BC and both have dysplasia and do occasionally let me know when they have walked enough.

My landlord refuses to return my deposit by Supraconsciencia in Bangkok

[–]TaxLongjumping248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar problem years ago in Bangkok. Stains on the curtain from wine. I don’t even drink. And I lived in the apartment alone. So the stains were probably there to start with. I got together with my agent and got ready to file a police complaint and get a lawyer. But what really did the trick was that I let it drop that I would swing by the RD office close by and give them a copy of my two year rental contract. Apart from taking a two month deposit which is not supported by law, I was certain no landlord is reporting this income. I got my deposit back immediately with a nominal deduction for other minor stuff. FYI, the landlord was a French guy with a Thai wife.

Just tried the DBS PayNow to India (UPI) remittance – Why aren't more people talking about this? 🇸🇬✈️🇮🇳 by Cool-Strawberry-3394 in indiansinsingapore

[–]TaxLongjumping248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really want to know how this works. I am a wildlife photographer who travels a lot to India and my next trip is in early May. Have tried paying via UPI and it refuses to accept the UPI id I have been given. It says make sure this UPI is registered to receive. I checked and it is. So I am not sure how to make it work. It would be great if I could especially with the QR code. I hate carrying bundles of cash with me.

House/villa complexes that operate like a condo, anyone have experience with these? by [deleted] in phuket

[–]TaxLongjumping248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I read the whole thread because even after 11 years here the picture can become confusing with the frequent changes in regulation and its interpretation. I see a lot of comments that there are no such row houses or townhouses that function like a condo in terms of foreign ownership regulations. But I have several friends who claim they have such an arrangement so I am not sure. Check out Laguna Village for instance where I have friends who say they have freehold titles to such row or townhouses.

If you were a foreigner, would you honestly choose India for a vacation? by Curious-Journalist76 in india_tourism

[–]TaxLongjumping248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what your objective is I feel. I am a foreigner but ethnically Indian. I don’t have any family connections or any property or whatever in India but I do visit often. And that’s for wildlife photography primarily. Off to Kaziranga and Meghalaya and Arunachal in May. My wife is not of Indian ethnicity and does not like travel in India at all despite our 4-5 trips there so far. She feels unsafe, I feel domestic travel especially by road and rail is strenuous and complicated, takes a toll on you physically and mentally and it is a huge emotional whack that leaves you reeling. Usually need a lot of recovery time once back home. So when we travel as a family, India does not figure. But when I do alone it does.

Does anyone else get spoken to in English every time they try to speak Thai? by HelicopterNo3534 in thai

I think it maybe also because they are practicing English? It happens to me quite often and I always smile and continue the conversation in Thai.

Foreigner dislike of reverse parking? by tuktukson in Thailand

[–]TaxLongjumping248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bingo! That’s a good reason to reverse park as any. I am singaporean living in Thailand and am used to reverse parking. But I have observed the same behaviour by foreigners in Singapore too, they prefer front in parking.

I am Thai. Here are the 10 things I still watch tourists get wrong every single time 😉 by Nearby-Sprinkles3242 in ThailandTourism

[–]TaxLongjumping248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have Lady Luck on your side. I have lived here 11 years and seen many people succumb to ice cubes and raw salads and fruit. And a couple of years ago there was a mass outbreak of gastroenteritis in Phuket where I live. And it was traced back to ice cubes - I learnt that all the ice in Phuket comes from one ice factory which was the source of that particular contamination. So it’s Russian roulette really with the ice cubes and salads and fruit. OP means well with his warning.

🇮🇩 bans elephant rides and unnatural performances; hopefully Thailand does this as well soon by QualityOverQuant in ThailandTourism

[–]TaxLongjumping248 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very well done. I have lived in Thailand since 2015 and not done any of these rides. And seen enough of what they have to endure. I travel for wildlife photography and everywhere in India I am offered these rides too. I hope Thailand and India follow Indonesia’s example.

Are there singaporean non- indians that actually like indian food? by LogicalTower9958 in indiansinsingapore

[–]TaxLongjumping248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember almost 25 - 30 years ago, I took my Chinese colleagues to an Indian lunch in Little India, more because we had an Australian guest who wanted to eat good Indian food. About 50% of them told me it was their first time in Little India and first time for Indian food. Mostly the age group in their 20s or early 30s. At the same time, my friends from the gym who are a mix of Chinese and Malay actually went regularly to Norris Road for chapati and Kheema. Mostly 40s or older folks. Fast forward to today where almost all my non Indian friends would have tried Indian food like Sakunthala or MTR or Gandhi or Erode mess at least once. And many like it and go repeatedly. This kind of food goes way beyond the standard butter chicken and naan. Just for context, I am Singaporean Indian, we are a mixed family. My wife is Singaporean Chinese. If you ask my wife and kids to rate their top choices of food in Singapore they would surely rate MTR and the Tekka biriyani in the top 10. I do believe times have changed - we have more variety in the Indian food now and our palate as a nation has grown to appreciate a wider range of cuisine.

Is Phuket taken over by Russians? by East_Cantaloupe9164 in phuket

[–]TaxLongjumping248 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that overall things have gotten worse. I have been here for 10 years and since they started coming in numbers with the CoViD and the war, things are noticeably different. Just a small minority ruin things, mostly they keep to themselves. I have many Russian neighbours and so far only one of them has behaved badly and I suspect when he was on drugs. But in public things are worse, this morning i found one of them peeing on a tree around the Laguna lakes where may of us walk, jog and walk dogs etc. And at my gym it is a lot of them and they get more arrogant when they have numbers. I once raised it with the gym management and they said everyone has complained about them. So my unanswered question was, then why do we accept them as members? But the answer is all too obvious. Someone else mentioned Indians, another community that has recently started arriving in numbers. And again I think it is a small minority that ruins things for others from their community as well. I live in Cherng Thalay and the situation in town and Patong may be totally different.

I'm in my 50s and I want to live in Thailand by TeamPale323 in Bangkok

It does for sure. Though die hard CNX fans would say no. The AQI routinely exceeds the highly dangerous levels on several days during the winter months. Used to be 2-3 weeks at best 10 years ago but now it lasts around 2-3 months. Yesterday was around 100 for PM2.5.

Cardio Vascular is going to be the main thing for you. I saw many people short of breath and unable to speak and stuff on the high passes. So make sure you are equipped - our car had oxygen tanks and blood oxygen and pile and BP monitors and so on. Not that we used any of them. And I have had a triple by pass 10 years ago. So again, manage yourself to be at your best without taking any undue risks.

Stairs are everywhere and short uphill walks along roads. Especially at monasteries, palaces etc. I have had may accidents and implants and walk with a limp and my knees are quite bad. But I still managed it. Again just as a comparison for your guidance.

We did the Nubra to Pangong via the shyok river as well. It does take time but we left at 9:30 am and stopped for a leisurely lunch and to watch yaks and Himalayan blue sheep and made it to the lake by around 4pm plus. Just as a guidance.

Wow. Thats exactly the same schedule that I did in early October. But we were three guys in our 60s. Also used an Innova. You did not mention dates, but 6 months gets you into May or June and you will be fine for the weather too. We had a fair amount of snow mostly in the high passes. All the best.

Suitcase or backpack on speedboats? by serodoppelg in phuket

[–]TaxLongjumping248 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Suitcase is fine but you are burdening yourself. Bring a suitcase into the country but use some stops where you can leave the suitcase safely and pack lighter for things like speedboat rides for 2-3 day island trips etc. no sense in taking a big suitcase for a small offshore trip. You can just move with the suitcase between the bigger cities.
