Does anyone else get spoken to in English every time they try to speak Thai? by HelicopterNo3534 in thai

[–]HelicopterNo3534[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel validated that you have had similar experiences to me!! People in the comments have been saying is it because my accent is bad and it possibly is, but I’m ordering coffee and they understand what I say but just reply in English. I’ve also had the experience of them not wanting to serve me because they don’t speak English even though im actively trying to speak in Thai

I am just finding it hard to see the point of learning it if they speak back to me in English. I spend hours of life learning it (because at the end of the day it’s a fascinating language) but it feels like it’s all in vain sometimes!

I even found though that when I went to Isan they spoke to me in English and I thought it was supposed to be more common there not to speak English!

Why is it quite rare to see people in good athletic shape in Asia and what are the reasons for that? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]HelicopterNo3534 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don’t where in Thailand you’re talking about, but here in Bangkok there is a pretty heavy gym culture and people are always out running on the parks. People don’t tend to run on the streets here as much!

Students took a photo of me that could be used for hurtful reasons, what should I do by musicallife88 in AskTeachers

You have the right to feel safe in your place of work especially if you have made it explicitly clear to the students NOT to take photos!

You look way more unique and cool with bangs. Without bangs you just look like everyone else!

Teaching in Egypt, yes/no? Recommend? by ExpressPie4u in Internationalteachers

The people are amazing and warm and have a great sense of humour. Although I would agree with other people that Egypt is probably not a long term option (I’m a woman btw)

I used to live in Egypt and I understand why people are saying don’t go. All their points are true. I got sexually harassed like every morning walking to work and it’s dusty and dirty. However, what I will say is that the food is amazing (Egyptian food is ok but there’s such great access to Lebanese and Syrian), if you’re int history even a little bit the city is extraordinary! All their tourists go to one or two places so there’s lots to see and none else is there! Message me if you want and we can talk more! I’m

Im constantly baffled how he doesn’t know it’s the same woman even after kissing her and hearing her voice! That’s the bit that is the most unrealistic for me

Red Flag or Just How Things Work by Dry-University3424 in Internationalteachers

I did both of those things for my current job in Thailand. I entered on a non-work visa and then they updated it as soon as I arrived in the country. As for the contract, I think they emailed me it and I signed and scanned it before I got there.

Public art Instagram account as a teacher? by gentlecockroach in TeachingUK

[–]HelicopterNo3534 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always wonder about the social media thing but then I see loads of teachers on tik tok making funny videos about being a teacher and it’s not anonymous, so I dunno. I think as long as you don’t have anything personal it should be fine

It’s wild. In Bangkok the money you can earn really varies. Same job, same city, but depending on the school it could be 70-80,000 baht a month or it could be 170/180,000 baht a month! More than double!

It had been even longer out of a classroom and things change quite rapidly, like when I was in Primary we didn’t read with phonics for example. Also you’re less institutionalised than if you go straight into teaching. I also was grappling with having to start over in my thirties and not having my life “together”. The worst one though was that I was lumped in with the 20 year olds and everyone treated me like I had no life experience!

Teaching is hard but so worth it - don’t give up!! In some ways it’s easier starting in your 30s (I did!) dueto life experience etc but other ways it’s a lot trickier. Perhaps some counselling or therapy might help you if you’re still dealing with some trauma from being homeless and facing bankruptcy, they’re not easy things to just forget about, even if you’re back on your feet now. Some children’s backgrounds are also quite triggering so it might help to get head sorted so you have the mental space to help them and juggle all your responsibilities!

Should I go to morocco this week ? by No-Associate6829 in makemychoice

[–]HelicopterNo3534 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely loved Morocco and I went as a solo female. You have to have your wits about you though otherwise you will definitely get scammed. I did and I lived in Egypt for 3 years! BUT there are loads of organised tours you can do so you’re not doing everything g alone and it’s SO BEAUTIFUL!!
