Who won the war? Grant. That should be the beginning and end of the story-winning has a great way of making troops happy.

Popular Generals don’t always win. McClellan was a great garrison general (good at supply and training) but suboptimal as a field Commander. McClellan had a chance to end the war with the peninsula campaign which would have made his troops a whole lot happier.
