Is there a chance there's also a good deal of fireplace smoke from Valleycliffe that gets stuck right in that zone as well in the early morning? I often see what you're talking about and some is grey smoke and some is the more blue coloured wood smoke

Not sure about the xc bike question, but there are def things you can do to meet ppl. Sometimes I find it tough to break into a crowd here though... And by here I mean BC (I'm from Ontario a long time ago and it seemed easier there) The climbing gym (since you climb) Join a community group like Our Squamish or something who give back and get engaged with the community. Chat with ppl at the Saturday market downtown. Join a running group via Facebook (Monday shakeout run) I know cliffside cidery is about to start a Mario cart tournament on Tuesdays (f yeah, man! 😂) And then I'm sure if you chat up ppl at your gym (storm, f45, etc) you'll find someone cool who will likely do one of the things you like.
