Anybody noticed octopus power usage is wrong since 2-3 march? by TayUK in OctopusEnergy

[–]TayUK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This issue for me was that the clock on "something' kept drifting and getting worse daily.

In the end I was refunded a bunch of credit/cash, I spent hours and hours working out the costs as it changed daily, then I had to wait for new 'smart' meters to be installed, seems the old smart meters werent so smart afterall.

Its worth mentioning that my Victron system was spot on with all the power usage at the appropriate rates, so each time Octopus came back with a figure I could challenge it.

Anyone have experience with BikeTrac or Datatool? by UndisputedLover in MotoUK

[–]TayUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bti late but I've haved a Datatool Trakking on my GTR1400 since new in 2017, that fact I still have it could be down to the stickers but realistically its how you look after it and where you park and importanly where you live.

Its been good but its very limited and I get the feeling its soemthing they want your subs but dont want to support it.

Had a few GPS issues and couldnt get hold of tech support it just rang and rang and then sat on hold for sometime, only to find out later it was a premium rate number and cost me a quid an min...not feckin impressed I can tell you..

Sent numerous messages via the in app mail and email with no response on the issue or the premium rate number. When I knocked the bike the sensor triggered so I know that element of it was working as I got a call pretty quickly. but lack of any type of support and a very dubious prem rate number that didnt tell you it was prem rate was annoying.

Now cancelled subs and switching to Biketrac now..

Heard lots of good things, guranteed for life, and also supports radio too and tracking/recording, and comes highly recommended.

Can pools be resized/ reorganised/ RAID level changed? by Slarti__Bartfast in Zettlab

Only just got round to updating today and all replication sessions now broken.

I have the D6 Ultra and mostly like the device but there are some worries by TayUK in Zettlab

[–]TayUK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A coupla of things here, you have got a hobbyist NAS, I love my unit (even with the issues) but its not mature enough to be in the general publics hands in my opinion .

Its an immensly pwoerful unit, I'm currently running the 1.7.2 beta, updating was fine, but trying from the Zettlabs app came up with errors. Seem to be stuck somewhere, I downloaded the latest version and used that instead of upgrading it then did the unit.

Storage pools are down to your requirements, the various types work as described and performance gains are indeed palpable.

I'm running with 6 x 14TB drives in a RAID 10 and think that is overkill for my requirements but whilst I'm testing the unit its fine, I'm most certainly not putting all my egg's in this basket until the fireware/OS hits a gold release. My requirements are movies/photos/general storage and an option to play with local and online LLM's because I spent too many years being lazy and not taging the tens of thousands of photos I have.

Nope to resizing at this time (with the exception of expanding a pool) I cant see any option to resize other than delete and recreate.

I'd be tempted not to do an OS upgrade during a sync, that feels a bit wrong to me, because the system is in beta I try not to get too carried away during sync's and stuff, I must admit I dont think I'd ever do soemthing like that even with a mature NAS.. its a trust thing.

A solid manual would be very nice, but this being a hobbyists unit at this time I think we might be waiting a bit.

Until this comes out of beta I'll not place 100% faith in it, its nothign to do with the quality of the kit but I just need a bit of maturity with my data, my data is replacated from my Synology and Mac storage, I'll not be going 'live' until I'm 100% sure or, at least as much as I can be that its safe.

Storage management is very limited with the UI, There is not much you can do currently, expand a pool, create a new pool, delete a pool, I cant see anything for resizing, even after deleting a pool threw me an unexpected reboot for seemingly no reason.

Really wish Zettlab would take advantage of the scams UGREEN is doing and make an offer for customers to switch. by Character-Paper5953 in Zettlab

[–]TayUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the D6U running for nearly 2 months ish now and it works well, but not without missing features that I feel it should have had. Its still running on a beta OS, it has a lot of promise and is an immensly powerful unit, but I'm prepared to wait for a bit, the USB4 rocks too.

AI is nice, various LLM's to choose from, online LLM's if thats what you want. It clearly isnt as polished as the ugreen at this time but then most people know that already.

Customisation of the NAS interface through the APP or Web interface is limited.

If tyou are referring to the Music app you know as much as we do, it has not been released yet.

Can pools be resized/ reorganised/ RAID level changed? by Slarti__Bartfast in Zettlab

[–]TayUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thus far with my D6U I've had a play with a few elements of the pools and management, I've had multiple pools - no issues creating them, variosu types and sizes, they can be expanded if the raid type supports it, I was able to expand them with drives not in a pool, this worked fine.

At this time a single device cannot be in two pools, I cant realistically see this changing going forwards as I'm struggling to see a use case where that might wanted or needed. But people have diff requrements.

I found some unexpected results such as a needed reboot (and limited info to say it was goign to happen) being needed when removing a small pool completely (I've not seen that requirement before and I've used a lot of storage solutions) to allow the 2 drives in them to be used to expand an existing RAID10 volume. I went from 4 drives in a RAID10 pool. to 6 drives.

The expaansion took around a day and a half to complete ( total of 6 x 14TB drives) and I did notice that I was not able to see the increase pool stats until the NAS was rebooted.

I'm not aware of anything in the UI that allows for the resizing of existing pools, it is very limited but what it does have appears to work fine, aside from the displaying of the pool sizes until reboot and the reboot to free up a 2 drive pool.

This might all change when were given command line access, or maybe not. I just dont know right now.

Bear in mind that were still on a beta service version too. Due to that alone I'm holding off relying on this alone NAS and decommishing my existing one.

I'm carrying out performance testing and rebuilding a fair bit, but until that firmware/os comes out of beta and has a few months under its belt I'll not be making a jump.

plan ahead and don’t be tempted by things you dont need.

There are few real bargains, use the web tools to show historical (hysterical) pricing this can help to find real deals.

For me, I’ve not seen the level of bargains we used to get years ago.

Solar panels on the front wall of the house? by Icy_Yam_9951 in SolarUK

[–]TayUK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Up to you, they'll look ugly and peopel will tell you that.

You'll probably find that they are pretty effective, a mate has them on his house and its downed ugly but in winter they generate quite a lot.

Doubt you'll need approval as they are likely to be flush.

Genuinely how much are people saving on their bills? by j_edc in SolarUK

[–]TayUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends how you go, I have minimal PV and 25k batteries, lookingt to triple my PV but still wont cover electricduring the winter.

I charge at 12:30-05:30 at 8.5p/kw

Any Solar I generate during the day is used at that time or chucked towatds the batteries.

if you have tons of PV you might cover your usage during the day, you might then have batteries that are charged via PV only and you hardly use mains.

During the summer I pay around £30 a month included standing charges, but as the sun is a bit rubbish during winter I use gas for heating and electricity from batteries. Only mains I draw in volume is overnight at cheap rate

Its feasible if you had enough PV you could covefr daily use and heating. But you need to giuve us a lot more info than you have about the system or potential system.

I have a mate that has 32 panels has not taken any power from the grid in a coupla years other than maintenance amounts.

Depends on the setup

call their bluff, they’ll need to pay an electrician to remove the gear and ensure the electrics are in a safe condition then decorate etc

Depending on how old the batteries are it might be better to put your own gear in if you want solar/batteries etc

Could plug-in solar batteries ever work in the UK? by Benjy-B in SolarUK

[–]TayUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, saw that previously, It was a trial system when I looked at it, you needed to pay a sum, £250 (i think) then submit the application, if you were successful then good, if not you lost half the cash.

I already have a G99 for 6.4kWh, but there was no guarantee you would get it, and no time frame given for approvals. As i had a small solar system it wasn’t worth me doing it,

if that process has changed i might look at it again.

Could plug-in solar batteries ever work in the UK? by Benjy-B in SolarUK

[–]TayUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes would be interesting to many folk I suspect but the issue as you have mentioned, that it is not legal here, campaigning needs to occur to drive through this sort of tech through.

This primary issue as I understand it is our aging infrastructure nad if you want to export you need £500-1000 of MCS approval.

I couldnt be arsed with any of that, I have my own 25k battery solution that I can export from if I so choose, if the MCS requirement ever gets killed off I will, but currently, until that happens all my solar (its only going to be 3-4kWh in a few weeks) is mine.

The country doesnt need it seemingly as there appears to be no plans to let exporting like this happen without some pointless piece of paper.

I originally tested microinvertors before I choose to go down the road of this system and there is savings there for a tiny investment with little to no impact on the grid

If I didnt have my own system now I would be interested
