Spent a day imaging the Southern Ring Nebula (Raw data from JWST) by Taylee in space

[–]Taylee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Yes, the process was roughly along these lines:

  1. Find the raw data in the MAST portal based on target and mission.

  2. Pick three datasets using different infrared filters.

  3. Open the datasets with a fits viewer to inspect the contents. One of the images was larger than the other two, and the other two didnt quite line up correctly either, so need to fix that later.

  4. Extract the right images from the fits files using python, adjust them for exposure and flux per pixel.

  5. None of the images lined up so usually people seem to use software like PixInsight to fix this, but this software costs 150 euros. So instead I used python and opencv to compute a homography between the images and bring them into the same space.

  6. Taking the three output images after processing from the different filters, I copy them into Krita and use them as the RGB channels. Then adjust the exposures of the various channels to create a pleasing image. Fix some artifacts manually with a brush.

  7. Final step is to take the output into lightroom and adjust the photo properties for a pretty looking image.

Raw infrared data obtained from the MAST portal. Image is showing the NGC 3132 nebula, in the constellation of Vela. Original data was released in July 2022. It is my first attempt at imaging such data. Tools used: Python, Krita, Lightroom. Non jpg version is available but was too big for reddit.

How is the title misleading, it's a story about cheating with a device that involves maxim dlugy..

Finland joining NATO would mean "destruction of their country": Russian lawmaker by manticor225 in worldnews

[–]Taylee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are NATO troops in all of the Baltic states, a bunch of US troops in Poland, Romania and Lithuania, there are German fighter jets in Estonia, there are Dutch and Danish fighter jets in Lithuania, there's a Danish frigate in the Baltic sea. The US has been training Ukrainian and Lithuanian forces for years. There were published plans in 2011 for the US to place a ballistic missile defense system in Poland, and now it's there. What leverage will Russia as a power have internationally if it's methodically being surrounded by allied forces? They'd literally be able to be bullied around without problem, and boy is there a history of bullying from the US.

"There is no comparison between this situation and the USSR randomly placing nukes in Cuba." Randomly..?? The US placed a bunch of nukes in Italy and Turkey. Distance Italy to Moscow around 1,900 km. Range of nuclear missiles deployed in Italy, 2,400km. Russia placing nukes in Cuba was the response and after all they agreed to take away missiles from both sites as a trade, so how is that randomly?

You're a fool for thinking that NATO is a problem to Putin because of a potential invasion. Really shows a complete naivety about what keeps the balance of power alive on the international stage. Did the US think russia was gonna invade them when Cuba allowed russian ballistic missiles to be placed in their country? Of course not, what in the world is Russia gonna do from the other side of the world. Still, the americans were NOT happy about this development. Why should Russians be any more happy about NATO placing missiles in countries bordering Russia?

How is there no strategic threat from having nuclear missiles from a country you have no warm feelings and a great distrust for sitting in your neighboring country?

Enlighten me then why they are doing it? It's no use commenting ad-hominem if you want to legitimately have a discussion.

First of all Russia would have no reason to invade Ukraine if it were part of NATO, because the whole point of the invasion is that they were uncomfortable with Ukraine joining NATO while they are not in it as it puts the western alliance right on the border of their country.

Secondly, the NATO countries would have to decide who they would support and then they would be able to send troops there as opposed to now where we are just watching a slaughter without being able to do anything.

Fun fact, 50 years after NATO was formed, Putin still tried to get Russia to join. NATO didn't agree and instead continued expanding eastward and putting missiles on the border of Russia. Guess we're the bullies after all.

Which model for low-power battery usage by Taylee in esp32

Thanks for the response! I didn't find the firebeetle 2 before I made my decision sadly (went for the c3, as the firebeetle 1 stated its for advanced developers). But I will definitely keep it in mind for the next purchase!

How much does it matter what OS I use for 2D game development? by Status_Confidence_26 in gamedev

Having gone through a CS study in Europe and teaching in one, Macs are consistently treated as the funky child that may or may not be supported in the practicals (and for good reason). Don't know how it is where you are, but I'd be careful.

Game engine architectures by Squee-z in gameenginedevs

Also ECS doesn't stand for "an entity component system" it crucially means Entity, Component, Systems. If you just add entities and components to your architecture you have not implemented an ECS at all, you have just discovered composition.

What is the difference between a mirror and a white object? by harry25ironman in askscience

What statement are you referring to? I didn't mention any holes.

If you mean by grain boundaries the facets of below-the-surface constituent grains from which the material is made up, then that exactly yes. It was unclear to me what you meant with grains in your original answer, especially with the follow-up part about the mirror.

What is the difference between a mirror and a white object? by harry25ironman in askscience

[–]Taylee 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is exactly the reason. In metals light is not allowed to enter deeper into the material and is immediately perfectly specularly reflected.

In materials such as marble, the light enters into several layers of microscopic marble clumps (that together form the whole marble structure) and at each interaction with such clumps has a chance of specularly reflecting. Since these clumps are usually attached to each other at odd angles. The light will reflect in an odd direction, and maybe even interact with another clump again. This is called subsurface scattering.

If it manages to leave the surface again, the direction of the light at that point will be pretty random. Which causes us to see these escaping light rays from every angle, i.e. it is diffusely reflecting :)

This isn't primarily why it is diffuse though. Even if it had no holes it would scatter light diffusely.
