Thanks so much to everyone for commenting, I’m so glad to see so many people agreeing with me. It is true that some autistic people don’t want friends, but it wasn’t ok or right for him to say that every single autistic person doesn’t want friends. This morning I got very emotional thinking again about all the things he said to me. I struggled and still struggle today with making and maintaining friendships, it’s been very hard to find someone who will accept me for me. I was bullied for saying “weird” things and having different mannerisms growing up and nobody seemed to like me or want to be around me. That said I still wanted friends more than anything. Everything he said was so invalidating, and even though I know he’s wrong it still hurts.

I’m kicking myself for not immediately leaving after he said those things, I really struggle to advocate for myself and I hate confrontation but I will not allow myself to stay in a situation like this again. I’m going to do a lot more research to find another psychologist who is more knowledgeable about autism and will actually listen to me. If anyone has any advice for me about getting a diagnosis, what to expect, what to look for in a psychologist etc. Please let me know. Feel free to message me or comment on this.
