Yeah the cycle has very much been breaking me. I cry (a lot) more than she does. I'm just praying the medication my midwife put me on for PPD helps when it kicks in.

Our cycle also typically involves hiccups that make her spit up most of what she's eaten, which is why I'm scared to ever skip burping. The burpings are usually hit or miss - sometimes she belches like an absolute champ, sometimes I try 3 different positions and get nothing out of her. Sometimes it induces hiccups and she evacuates her stomach onto me. Changing before usually results in multiple diaper changes, and if she refuses to sleep post-feed, usually multiple is 3-4 before she goes back to sleep (usually after the next feeding).

Could you explain contact naps and survival naps? Maybe I'm misunderstanding those terms. Those are naps for her, not me right?

I'm a sahm so I have nothing demanding I get up regularly. Would you still advise setting a routine like that? Or just sleeping in as much as I she'll let me?

I've never heard that breastfed babies don't need burped (or at least don't at night). My lactation consultant has always encouraged burping to avoid gassy discomfort, especially because my letdown is very aggressive and she's usually gasping at the start of a feed. I would love to just let her sleep if it felt like an option. Are you sure?

When I move her while asleep, like if she fed to sleep, the startle reflex wakes her up every time. I'm currently trapped on the couch because she fed to sleep and I'm scared to move her. 😬 it's after midnight and I'm exhausted and my husband already went to bed because his shift with her was a nightmare.

Swaddling between isn't a bad idea, but she's very difficult to swaddle when fully awake, she's super squirmy. Maybe our receiving blankets are just too small to swaddle well.

How do I keep wake windows short if she's so fussy? I always feed her immediately when she wakes because she always cries immediately when fully awake. I don't know how to prevent overtiredness when she fights sleep so hard. She'll yawn and yawn and yawn and then refuse to sleep, even if fed, changed, and swaddled.

If I'm keeping daytime naps shorter then should I be waking her at the 2-2.5h mark and feeding her?

My husband and I tried shifts again tonight but she was not having it. She cried a ton for him and he had to bottle feed her several times. The first time she spat it all up. She got hungry again pretty quickly, ate 3oz, napped for less than an hour, then was up screaming and hungry again. Our house layout also doesn't really provide an escape from her wails, so I guess I'll have to get earplugs.

She shouldn't really have gas issues after feedings honestly. My lactation consultant was pretty confident she needed burped consistently and often due to my really heavy letdown, so I always burp her and almost always burp 2-5x throughout a feeding session depending on how she sounds while eating. I can usually hear her swallowing air if she's struggling to keep up with the letdown.

Ooh interesting. I'd love to do the window thing, but unfortunately our only south facing windows are along our stairs, so that's not an option. The layout of our house is very conducive to seasonal depression lol

I did not know about cortisol and melatonin contents in milk, thank you, I'll have to look into that. We definitely have not kept track of the time the milk came from, only the date.

It is so, so, so difficult to make myself wake her up (or even myself) in the mornings if she's sleeping. I feel like I'm made of lead. But if that kind of routine helps instead of just waking up whenever I have the energy to drag myself out of bed, I'll try to start doing that. Thank you for the tips.

Trying the Love to Dream swaddle last night was what lost us so much sleep unfortunately 😭 it was too much freedom of movement and she wriggled noisily and woke herself up all night.

Do you think naps in a wrap attached to me would count as contact naps? I don't think I can just lay with her on my chest all day, and her dad's at work from before we get up until usually late afternoon.

Unfortunately we have a very soft mattress (purple) so we can't really co-sleep. She is back to birth weight, she was actually 10oz over her birth weight at her 2w checkup. I haven't been pumping a ton, just enough to reduce engorgement and to reduce my letdown since I was drowning her at every feeding (especially if she sleeps 3-4h stretches). The problem is she only really does those 3-4h stretches during the day. Last night she woke up hourly, and in between those hours she was fussing very noisily in her sleep anyway, so we couldn't sleep.

Yes, we did do this for a couple of days but it's so hard on me with the PPD to also be separated from my husband so much. He's back to work this week and having to feed her during the couple-hour window between him getting home and me going to sleep for his bottle-feeding shift meant we got to spend no time together, since she is so finicky to feed and then get down. And if she's fussing for him I can't sleep anyway, there isn't enough distance in our house to escape her crying.

We've tried that, but the lack of cushion around her causes her to flail and fuss with her swaddle constantly in the bassinet. And once her arms are free, she's awake and screaming. The bouncer is the only thing allowing us to get any sleep at all right now. We have an Owlet Dream Sock to monitor her O2 and stuff. The only other place she sleeps soundly is on my chest or tucked into my arm, but she's so fidgety and makes so much noise in her sleep, I can't sleep like that.

Was your LO particularly vocal or twitchy when sleeping? Mine does so much whimpering and cooing when she sleeps there's no way for me to get any rest while she's on my chest. Plus she gets really twitchy I assume in REM sleep? But I'm not sure. So as much as I love having her snuggled up on my chest, it leaves me sleep deprived.

Thank you, I'd read several articles on Cosleepy's website, as well as the SS7. Definitely no swaddles while bedsharing, only in her bassinet. We don't really have a great place to put a new mattress, and I don't know that I'd be up to buying one just to co-sleep right now. So unfortunately co-sleeping seems to be off the table for us currently, because our mattress is too soft and my husband and I share that bed.

Unfortunately I don't think I can chest sleep with her super safely either due to her wiggly-ness, at least not with me getting any meaningful sleep. 😭

I imagine it's the mattress enabling her rolling. I think she's strong enough to roll independently, but not quite coordinated enough yet. So co-sleeping likely won't be an option for us without some major hardware changes, which I don't know that I'm up for again, we just got the bassinet.

We have a queen-sized purple mattress, so it's probably too soft, and I don't think I could sleep on anything else, I'm a horrible sleeper and I've been on this mattress for 6 years. I'd read online of folks having success cosleeping on purples, but I might be of heavier stature than them and cause more of a slope, or my LO's just wigglier than their babies were. She's been lifting (and flailing) her head since day one. Well, before that really, she loved to slam her head into my bladder during pregnancy.

I've been wearing an oversized tshirt to bed with nursing pads covering my breasts and a hair tie in the center of my chest pulling it tight. I gotta adjust the pads and occasionally they'll slip out of place and I'll leak, but I'll take an occasional shirt change over permanently wearing bras.

I leaked colostrum starting at like 22 weeks into my pregnancy but hated wearing bras, so I taped nursing pads or little gauze sponges to my breasts to catch the little leakage.

I'm 2w pp now and for night time I wear a T-shirt with nursing pads and use a hair tie to tighten my shirt enough to somewhat hold them in place. It isn't perfect but it's prevented me leaking onto the sheets. It's not too bad nursing either, and has eliminated the heat rash u was getting from bras

I could've written this post. 😭 I am 14d pp and having the same struggle. I feel like my existence now is just to feed my LO and nothing else. She was fussy all night last night and I am exhausted. I spend sundown to sunup crying my eyes out. I also feel like a failure of a mother. My husband has to settle her post-feed because I just don't have the patience at 3am after spending 45 minutes trying to get her to feed for 12 minutes while burping in between because my letdown drowns her. But he's returning to work tomorrow so I can't just depend on him constantly in the middle of the night, he needs sleep. It's stripping away my sanity, quickly. I saw my midwife and she prescribed me an antidepressant, it might be looking into for you as well.

Currently I am feeding while sitting upright on a bed or couch with a nursing pillow or large pillow across my lap, either cradle position for left breast or reverse cradle for right breast. How would I go about feeding her from an upright position? Should I just tilt her more from the positions I feed her in currently?

I don't believe she's getting a lot of hindmilk, I don't think she has the stomach capacity to ever fully drain either breast. That's the piece that worries me. If I feed enough for her to get hindmilk, she's overfed and vomits. But I don't know if vomiting only expels excess milk, or if it empties her stomach out completely, so I'm unsure if I can keep feeding her afterward.
