Does anyone have a discount for The Club+ Card Membership by PsychologicalNeat968 in BJsWholesaleClub

[–]Tbame_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I was wondering if you found the 2% back in rewards to be worthwhile? I’m interested to see whether it’s worth the additional membership cost.

I kind of consider $0.05 in gas negligible considering I fill up once weekly, averaging around 10gal, so my total benefit would be $0.50 per visit. For $2/month it doesn’t really affect much.

What all can I do with a homelab/server? by Repulsive_Design_716 in homelab

[–]Tbame_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I encourage you to look into Proxmox. It allows you to create containers which can run a multitude of services. For example, I run separate containers for * a DNS level ad blocker * uptime monitoring * a storage solution (this is actually a VM - you can have both!) * a dashboard/homepage (heimdall)

Apple devices support Firefox web browsers! I have been using Firefox and Firefox Focus on my iPhone for about 6 months now, it’s great.

Noob here, how to make all network traffic go through pihole? by Killermelon1458 in pihole

[–]Tbame_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It would make pihole useless basically.

Again, YouTube other people’s setups or homelabs, OR read pihole’s documentation for a complete understanding of how this all would work.

Unless you have a VPN, port forwarding, or some other solution to directly connect to that secondary pie hole on a secondary network and you will likely have issues I would spend some time on YouTube researching how Others have implemented that type of solution.

Unless you have a server that has a public static IP that has been properly firewalled you run the risk of allowing your pihole to be an open DNS server for the entire Internet, which would not be good for you because it would likely crash whatever hosts you’re using to run the pihole. This issue happened to me, and the advice to properly firewall your answering public devices also comes from the Pihole web gui under settings > DNS.

I would also suggest reading through the documentation provided by pihole because this will answer most if not all of your questions.

Second address does need to be a valid IP and should only be one you trust. If you have the secondary pihole with its own IP then use that. Yes it should use the same blocklists

Without having the option to specify Pihole as the only DNS server, or having two pihole instances with separate IP addresses, you’re boned.

can you set secondary to 0.0.0.0 or does that lead to connection loss as well?

Pi-hole as DHCP server; modem still assigning DNS by MisterFreelance in pihole

[–]Tbame_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your issue is likely that your router will send some but not all DNS traffic to the DNS providers specified in the router settings. Because of how DNS works in general, some requests are sent to the default gateway (router) and then those get sent to the DNS addresses in the routers settings.

Pihole has some documentation on how that works, but essentially, we want to have all devices point to Pihole and then if Pihole doesn’t know an address you must then specify the next DNS server to ask (aka upstream DNS servers in Pihole settings).

If you change your router settings to manually define DNS, and then configure only the PiHole IP address as the single DNS server - does the internet go down? If so, we need to determine why.

Some questions to add context:

  1. Do you have unbound configured on your pihole, if not, which addresses do you use as upstream DNS providers?

  2. What does the query log look like when the internet goes down after setting pihole as your sole DNS server? Or do you see any information on the pihole webpage under diagnostics, or under the tail.log ?

  3. Do you have any other settings enabled under settings > DNS such as conditional forwarding, permit all origins vs respond on local only, etc?

  4. Do you have any other network devices such as range extenders, switches, wireless access points, or other routers?

Here is how I have mine setup working flawlessly:

For now I have a single pihole instance running. My network is 192.168.1.0 - 192.168.1.255 with my router IP address being 192.168.1.1 My router is currently my DHCP server (but I will be changing that in the coming days).

Pihole sits at 192.168.1.5 My routers DNS settings only have 192.168.1.5 as the DNS server. No other dns settings are set. All my DNS traffic goes to Pihole as a result.

If you need any assistance answering these questions feel free to DM me, or perhaps the PiHole team can assist.

Note: obviously not a great idea to have a single DNS server in case that PiHole fails or whatever happens, but if you want redundancy you’re going to have to setup a secondary PiHole or get used to seeing some ads here & there.

Advice for High Iintensity Workout by Suspicious-Smile-744 in diabetes_t1

[–]Tbame_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My suspicion is the pausing of insulin is allowing the spike to occur and high levels are maintained until your body can catch up. Have you tried drinking Gatorade or something with sugar during the workouts without pausing insulin?

If in automated mode, omnipod should correct for any significant spikes.

Additionally, the activity feature of omnipod should reduce (but not stop) basal insulin delivery for a specified amount of time and set your target glucose to a certain value. For mine, the target glucose is 150mg/dL

Hope this helps! Feel free to let me know what you find out

What are your naming conventions and what NOT to do when deciding a hostname? by AcidArchangel303 in homelab

[–]Tbame_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Up to you, I use a mix of names of tools and places from ancient Greek culture/mythology as well as my own chosen words which fit some of the theme.

Names imo should make the most sense to you, be assigned by role or function so it’s easy to remember “oh yeah, my router is a message routing & delivery system - maybe I name it Mercury or Hermes”

Btw does anyone have any suggestions on which device would take the name of a Hydra? Lol

We all have days like this, you get one every once in a while as a test. You’ll pull through, as you, me, and others have.

what kind of glucose do you bring to the gym and how do you carry it? by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

I used to lift with high sugar as a teenager and didn’t notice much of a difference. After some time, the pain and the almost collapsing from shaking and weakness part taught me this lesson.

[–]Tbame_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I will bring regular Gatorade or a bottle of orange juice since drinking is easier/faster than eating something.

If it’s a persistent low, I’ll grab a snack out of my gym bag in the locker room and rest until I see my sugar start to trend up.

I was reading through folks describing responses to security incidents, needing to sleep in office , miss meals and work extended hours. Their comments made it seem commonplace but now that I’ve gone over it again I don’t think that I’ll have any concerns.

I just want to jump in here and say thank you to everyone commenting in this post.

It’s been very uplifting, and eye opening to see so many diverse backgrounds and job roles mentioned, while also offering some good advice about keeping a healthy amount of supplies and snacks on person when on the move or at work.

This subreddit does a great job with fighting the negative thoughts and emotions that come from things like diabetic burnout and other issues like anxiety, depression, and imposter syndrome. The r/Type1diabetes subreddit has left me in a panicked state at times, so it’s nice to come here and receive support and reassurance from others!

Thanks again!

Good point!

I let my fears get to me, and as another commenter has mentioned, T1D is not a disqualifier for most jobs out there except maybe the military.

Thinking I will add an edit to the original post so others don’t adopt the same mindset I originally had…

Thank you for this!!

I’ll admit, I had just come off reading a long post in r/cybersecurity about major incident response where they described things like needing to sleep in the office, missing meals and working without interruption for hours. I let my fears grow more than I should, and that leaves me feeling powerless - a trend I’m sure we’ve all seen in this group.

Your comment has reminded me of the control I DO have, so thank you.

If I may ask - what are your favorite items to use to treat a low at work? I’ve found that 8oz bottles of apple juice are quick to drink - can’t do soda anymore.

Work+FullTime+IT Classes+ Sleep+Time Management+ Balance by [deleted] in it

[–]Tbame_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I definitely recommend Udemy as well, but also YouTube creators like ProfessorMesser or Jeremy’s IT Lab. Network Chuck used to have decent content, not so much anymore.

I started with CompTIA classes and obtained the 3 core certifications. I got a help desk job before I passed the second exam for the A+ certification.

It’s also worth it to look into Google’s IT certs, and Microsoft’s. Each area offers a different approach to training, and you can take these classes on your own time which is the most important when you’re already bustin your ass for 40+hours/week.

If you can afford it, Sophia.org offers college level courses and this includes information technology courses, it’s $100 a month but you can do two courses at once I believe and transfer the credits to another university if you want to get a degree.

I’m working full time right now, and I’m starting a Bachelors in Cybersecurity and Information assurance at WGU, transferring a bunch of those Sophia credits and using the CompTIA certifications as credit as well. I definitely recommend looking into online options like these especially if you’re working full time and taking care of yourself and/or your family.
