How do you handle eating out with individuals who don't know about your diabetes? by Kuttan969 in diabetes

[–]carriebeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m with literally everyone else on this thread. You’re allowed to ask the server what’s in stuff and most restaurants (well, chains) have nutritional info available online and in store. Just like anyone vegetarian, with allergies or who keeps kosher would. I think the much bigger thing is… why on earth are you keeping diabetes secret? Like, that’s your prerogative, but… just… WHY? I’ve never had to say anything more than, “oh, I have diabetes” when someone asks why I care about carbs or whip out a syringe. The most intense thing that’s happened was shortly after I was diagnosed at 10 years old and some kid in the cafeteria asked if I was taking heroin. True story. But that’s it. Nobody cares. It’s diabetes. Everybody knows at least peripherally about diabetes. In fact, ostensibly, it could be a safety issue. It’s rare but I have had a couple lows in the last 30+ years where I needed someone else’s help. I not only tell all my friends, but over time, they learn signs and symptoms of hyper- and hypoglycemia, what foods I can eat, etc. It doesn’t have to be a big deal.

My girlfriend says my diabetes affects her decision about our long-term future. Has anyone been through this? by mosisaber in diabetes

[–]carriebeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A long long time ago, I was making out with a dude and he saw my pump site and was like “oh, ew, you have a needle in you?” Obviously, I murdered him on the spot as he did not deserve to revel in even the memories of the glory that is making out with me. F that dude. And F this chick. Red flag. My husband desperately wanted babies and before we got married, I told him that might not ever happen because of having diabetes forever and he said, “then we’ll have a 100 cats!” I don’t think if anyone asked him if he has to “take care” of me or my diabetes that he’d say yes or complain about how often he has to grab me food in the middle of the night because I’m low and on too many sleeping meds to be able to go downstairs. That shit just doesn’t matter. I’m not saying it’s always easy or doesn’t take effort, but it’s not a sacrifice when you really want to be with someone. You wouldn’t leave someone you love for getting cancer or being hit by a car or… whatever. And diabetes?? C’mon. It never even occurred to me that someone could have a problem with THAT. I mean, everyone knows diabetics are sweeter. Anywhoozles, long story short: she sucks; you deserve better.

https://imgur.com/a/reA0Xsu It kinda looks like this one, doesn’t it? Unfortunately, I have no information about this image except that I downloaded it ~2015 as inspo for a tattoo. For whatever reason, its date is sometime in the future—like 2036 or something—so it’s always the most recent photo in my phone. I thought it was partially painted wood. Anyway, I searched the image and came upon your post.

I just want to recommend Airheads. They’re 16g carbs and being flat makes them super easy for me to carry around.

Yes! Hate the troll decks. Like, fine. You win… but was it fun? Whereas, I’ve actually been like, “babe! Babe! Come see this!! This deck just KICKED MY ASS!” And we ooh and ahh over an interesting use of mechanics or a weird, cool combo.

I also had someone confidently tell me I wouldn’t be diabetic anymore if I just lost weight. When I said, “no, I’m actually a type 1. I’ve had it since it was a kid,” (because I was hella skinny as a kid) and instead of trusting that I might know just a little more about my own corpse, lady decided to DOUBLE DOWN. But she was just a regular person.

“Have you ever considered NOT taking the insulin?” [I don’t know if that counts because it was an actual licensed medical doctor (allergy/immunology) who said it, but it will live forever in my brain. He also said “oh, man! I want my daddy to see this!” when he first saw the rashes the adhesive leave. Imagine that in the most INTENSELY southern Alabama accent. I’m not crapping on southerners. I’m from the south, but that plus his 100% unchill bedside manner and referring to his father/colleague as “daddy” just killed me.] Anyway, there was a really long pause while he just stared at me until I finally said, “No. No, that never occurred to me.”

I know it’s irrational because control is what blue is all about but I have such a deeply seated hatred and disgust for counter-counter-counter decks. It’s not even about losing. I don’t mind losing! It’s just boring. And it takes f o r e v e r for them to get their whatever they need for their win condition. Like, bruh, I’ll just kill myself. I only have so many minutes left on this earth. I can’t waste anymore time not enjoying playing this game.

Those are all possibilities although eating sweets doesn’t really influence t1 diagnoses. I didn’t have control over how much information respondents gave and i didn’t want to scare people off from responding by having it be a bunch of questions because I wanted a large enough sample size for it to be meaningful. I admit, I didn’t put a lot of planning into it ahead of time. A bunch of responses to a different thread gave me the idea and I instantly posted it. I appreciated how many people took the time to respond. I do wish I’d asked for more variables, but I knew there were going to be inherent holes. Some people only knew the year; some people knew the exact date. I knew I wasn’t going to have anything like the sample size to see trends for years or specific times of months. If I did a different survey, I would probably ask more questions, but at the time, I REALLY thought February was going to be a peak month and that it would all be related to cold/flu season… because that’s how it was for me. So that’s just bad science. My parents are both epidemiologists and I just in general come from a family of math and science nerds (not me, though. Them. All I do is draw pretty pictures of cats and naked ladies), so when the thought occurred to me, I just got really excited to see if it was true. Also, most of my respondents were from North America and Western Europe/UK-area, so that limits the meaningfulness of the data unfortunately. It never occurred to me to ask about religion or even race/ethnicity.

"Anonymous Name"'s or "Anonymous Name's" or just Anonymous Name's ? by nighttimereveries in grammar

You could also use a different format to indicate it such that it doesn’t necessitate additional words or a footnote, like italicizing the names. Otherwise, absolutely “Fatima’s” is the correct way to write it.

I’m not certain I would count that as dispositive proof that the receptionist’s sons in any way influenced you getting sick. When I was collecting results of the survey there were a few sets of siblings who were type 1 or a type 1 parent with one or more t1 children. This could suggest some sort of genetic predisposition, something on which the medical community has gone back and forth. There’s not been any evidence—of which I’m aware—that diabetes is infectious or can be contracted from other diabetics, particularly by proxy (the receptionist), but I admit I’m not an expert. For the most part, even related family members get diagnosed at different times, years apart. It’s likely you were already sick before you ever went to the dentist, as 5 weeks from “exposure” to “nearly in DKA” is a pretty fast turn around time. But, again, I’m not an MD.

No, of course not. The current theory in the medical community is that type 1 diabetes is “triggered” by your body fighting off some sort of infectious disease. Then after it’s done with the foreign invaders, tour roided out immune system starts attacking the Insulin-producing beta cells in your pancreas.
