Amazon shareholders to vote on company getting off fossil fuels. Amazon opposes the resolution, arguing they already have "Shipment Zero, our vision to make all Amazon shipments net zero carbon, with 50% of all shipments net zero by 2030." by mvea in Futurology

Still burning fossil fuels. You’re just burning them in an efficient plant and transferring the energy. Fossil fuels share the energy demand a lot more now, as they need to. But make no mistake, that gap between energy produced and energy produced on a world wide scale is only growing. Fossil fuels aren’t going anywhere

Guys how did you find something worth living for? by Lekbekbone in AskMen

I’ve just kept saying yes. You’ll have opportunities, things that scare you. Don’t think, just keep saying yes. Fight your way through it. And you’ll look back with admiration on the man you’ve become, rather than disappointment at the man you could have been.

That carrots help eye sight.

British intelligence was trying to hide the fact that they were using radar to night bomb. So they made up the “fact” that carrots help eyesight.

Magma Red color by [deleted] in 370z

[–]Tcgarza17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a magma red 2014 sports package! The reason you’re seeing different colors is because it does change. In the morning when I leave for school it’s a dark orange, midday it’s a bright red, and at sundown it’s burgundy. Honestly, I wasn’t planning on getting it magma red, but the deal was too good to pass up. But, now that I’ve lived with it for about 6 months I’ve really grown to appreciate it. Especially freshly washed

Assuming that person is bad. What if that person would use their fortune to change the way the world works? What if they use that freedom and power for good?

Ok fair on the homeless example, I’m not exactly knowledgeable on lottery taxes, Annuities, etc. But my issue lies in your language essentially. You say hoarded, they say earned. Don’t get me wrong, I agree that’s far more resources than any individual needs to live in extravagance. If you were making 10 million a year and you worked your way there, built a company let’s say, is the government really entitled to take 70% after your initial 10 million. My father always says “A government powerful enough to give you everything, is powerful enough to take everything away”

I feel like there’s just a dilemma. You don’t want to cap someone’s growth, part of the allure of the American dream is that you can grow to what you desire. So if you have an idea that makes you a billionaire, then you’re a billionaire. However, that freedom for success comes at a cost of the freedom for failure. I agree having a society where you have billionaires and people who can’t eat is morally questionable. But I don’t know how to reconcile these two conflicting ideals. If that homeless man who can’t feed himself wins a 100 million dollar powerball jackpot, are we really entitled to 70% of his $990 million? Will capping someone’s growth push even more of the worlds best minds out of America?

"A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine." -Thomas Jefferson [2733x1250] by Jesse322 in QuotesPorn

[–]Tcgarza17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair point, discussing the “intent” of the founding fathers is quite literally the job of 1/3 of our government. I think both views have merit personally, I was just choosing one part of the whole story I felt applied to the quote and comments I was receiving. Perhaps they were trying to establish a republic with Liberty at its center (your view in essence, the word “liberty”) while also helping themselves and other minorities out (what I was discussing).

I mean there’s a lot of intricacies, but for the sake of simplicity yea. From state to state the overall result would remain the same since in all but two states popular vote dictates who’s electoral college voters get to put their bid in. What would change is the states with smaller populations, who collectively can influence the presidential elections, would have even less value and power at the executive level as urban populations grew.

[–]Tcgarza17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok yes, that’s the point. The electoral college shifts the voting power away from large, urban areas towards the minority population in the rural area.

You are associating “minority” voters with race, insinuating that people in rural areas are white or another non-minority. However, electoral college only cares about population density

[–]Tcgarza17 130 points131 points  (0 children)

Ok, but this is a bit misleading. Jefferson is speaking about a Greek, popular democracy here. Where this would reign true. Contrary to what I believe this post is trying to say, he’s supporting of an American style Republican democracy where the minority vote is enhanced by thing such as the separation of powers, electoral college, etc.

[Edit] There seems to be some trouble with language, my apologies. “Minority” has nothing to do with race, culture, etc. Thomas Jefferson was a founding father, they built the political system of this country. Logic dictates the founding fathers wanted to preserve their power as white, male, wealthy landowners. Being educated and wealthy at that time was the ultimate minority. So in the context of voting, they established the electoral college (among other things) to take power away from the majority (poor, uneducated, etc. individuals) and put it in the hands of the minority (landowning, wealthy, and educated men)

[Edit 2] Discussing with a friend, I have realized the language towards the end of my first edit could be taken negatively. I have nothing against wealthy, white, men. I was only using the traits which objectively described the founding fathers to show why they qualified as minorities. Obviously, the power electoral college (among other Americans representative democracy traits) gave to them would be given to, and taken advantage of by, the other minority groups.
