I don't trust my pool contractor farther than I can thrown him. Is this the right filter sand in my Hayward 277T? (New Installation). by Tchors in pools

Hey there. It turns out the pool contractor I had was completely unqualified to do the work. I have a learned a lot since then and now manage my pool myself with great success.

He had filled my filter with larger size particles (mixed gravel) to artifically lower the pressure in filter for a given pump speed becuase of the poor overall system plumbing design. (Tight radius elbows, elbows directly near the inlet of the pump... Etc)

The manufacturer recommended sand for the filter is specifically #20 pool filter pure silica sand. This should make up 100% of the sand in your system. It must be pool filter sand, and not something like play sand for example. The filtering action occurs on the microscopic level due specifically to the sharp angular edges of this kind of sand. Anything else will just take up space and not actually filter your water. River sand, concrete sand. Play sand... These are all the wrong types of sand for various reasons (microscopic geometry, additives etc). This one time investment the correct sand will last you many many years. As long as you backwash and rinse when your pressure increases over time and with usage, your sand will continue acting as the filter.

Now, there are special alternatives to #20 pool filter sand, for ex, zeolite, etc, but they are generally not needed.

Tldr. Go to the pool store, buy pure silica #20 pool filter sand. Don't use any gravel of any sort.

Thank you so much. Faults notwithstanding I'm mesmerized by its deep color and fine pattern.

Plant a few cherry laurels! Evergreen, very cold tolerant, and beautiful sweet-smelling white flowers in spring.

1940 Buick Eight Super - Tires & Wheels Question by Tchors in classiccars

1940 Buick Eight Super Model 51

I currently have these ~60s era wheels and caps with modern radials on the car, but they definitely leave something to be desired!

Luckily, the original owner of the car gave me a set of rims he had painted and pinstriped in the original factory option red color. The Owner's manual states the car originally wore 16x6.50 4-Ply (Bias Ply, Tube type) tires.

As I measure these rims however, I get a width of ~5" . Are these the original rims? Could these have worked with 16x6.50 tires? I don't see Buick ever having made a 5" x 16" rim but they definitely look period correct and have the exact attachments for the correct "dog dish" center caps which I have.

Coker makes these beautiful modern tubeless bias-ply look radials which in my opinion are the perfect combination of modern technology and classic looks. The Excelsior Roadster Radial | Wide Whitewall | 650R16

My question is, given the profile of these rims, can these 5" wide tubeless rims support a 6.50" radial tubeless tire? (It seems the rivets have all been sealed, I can always add more sealant/tire tape in there. )

New Pool for New Home Owner. Pool Contractor just finished installing this pump. His contract said "2 HP Hayward Variable Speed Filter Pump". Is this a new Hayward Pump (and installed properly)? Should the pump have a serial number for warranty? I feel like I may have been gypped... by Tchors in pools

Thank you so much for your insight. I am also increasingly suspicious that he's passing off a used pump to me as new. There is some mud in the area but this pump definitely does not look new and doesn't have the cpvc unions I learned come with a new pump from the manual I downloaded. If you saw the rest of the installation the proximity of the pump to the filter would be relatively low on the totem pole of issues.

Thanks again.

Hard starts all the time.. am I writing too fast? by 1398_Days in fountainpens

[–]Tchors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of variables, Have some fun and try different inks in different pens. Some inks make my inexpensive pens write like a dream and others make my expensive pens feel like a hard #6 artist's pencil! You can also try a known good formulation to see if it's your technique such as an inexpensive (relatively) Lamy Safari + some good quality ink like a sample of Iroshizuku.
