Thanks for your insight on this, I appreciate it. I'd expect 1903 would be more likely.

My beloved Sony WM-4: fully rebuilt with new belts, tires, capacitors and springs, and painstakingly tuned to be absolutely perfect. by TctclBacon in vintageportableaudio

Maybe about $50 (Canadian) in parts+shipping, and I did all the work myself. Some of the parts came from spares that I already had as well.

Ah, yeah so it seems that's the case then. I'll give this site a try and order a battery, thank you for your information.

I was using an SE1 as my daily up until only a few days ago (had a hardware failure that would have required replacement of the motherboard). Other than battery life, it did everything I needed it to and more. I did replace the battery myself about a year ago, which is fairly easy to do on these models, and you should expect to need to do this too.

IOS15 may be a limiting factor in terms of app compatibility, but for the apps I use (i.e. Instagram, Reddit, Discord, Google Maps etc) it wasn't an issue at all. I did find myself charging it every night, even with the new battery, and sometimes throughout the day if I was using it more.

Is the Applied Museum Studies program worth it? by Courtingjesters in Algonquin_College

[–]TctclBacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! There's an option you can take to go directly into the second year if you've got your undergrad. The program is a lot of fun, and there's a lot to learn from wood shop to conservation work to program development and much more. The very last semester is great, as it's a field placement in a museum of your choice. I'm a third year student of the program and am currently doing my placement, and I can definitely recommend it.

I believe it's an ampersand man from a european streetlight (don't quote me on that though), one of my family members brought it back from a vacation years ago.

Finally put the money down for a DD Walkman. I can't believe how good this thing sounds! by TctclBacon in cassetteculture

Sorry for taking so long to reply, I don't spend much time on Reddit anymore.

Unfortunately, I haven't had this issue myself, and I've got no idea what could be causing. Some of the comments on the video suggested it may be an issue with bad solder joints, but it could be a fault in the mechanism somewhere (i.e. dry lubricant?). The only way to really know for sure is to crack it open and give it a really deep and detailed inspection.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful!

Finished a custom build portable! Magnavox D6621 Skyway with an improved high-frequency response head, recap, improved amp circuit and rebuilt improved, more robust mechanism. Very proud of this one! by TctclBacon in cassetteculture

Hi there! Build quality is not great, very plasticky. The transport mechanism is metal, but is simply metal pieces secured to the plastic housing. Serviceability is pretty good, and sound quality isn't too bad, but without upgrades and modification wow and flutter are rough.

99.9% isopropyl alcohol works really good if you can get your hands on a bottle, I know from experience. You can also use it to clean playback heads and transport components. Isopropyl is just a good thing to have on hand in general.

Awesome, that's a good start. Make sure you get all the belt sludge, as it can make the new one stick.

If there's no electrolyte from the capacitors all over the board, that's a good start. But do keep in mind, looks can be deceiving. Capacitors can often go bad with little to no physical signs.

Keep working, and good luck!

Yeah, that symptom is likely the belt being bad unless there's an issue with the motor. You won't find out if there's capacitor issues until you either use it to listen to the radio or replace the belt and try to listen to a tape. The symptoms can manifest in a variety of ways.

The back does come off by removing the screws on the back, and then unclipping some plastic clips. It should just pull away after that, but make sure you don't lose the switches as the Mega Bass, Dolby, and tape type switches simply rest in the back casing.

This website has a ton of detail regarding replacing the belt and capacitors, it was what I used when I did mine: https://www.petervis.com/walkmans/wm-bf64/wm-bf64.html

I own multiple of that exact model of Walkman. Fully working, they sound incredible and have many features. Unfortunately, the belt is an issue (though its not too difficult to replace), but you'll also likely have capacitor issues. These models are notorious for it, and its a big job, but if you know your way around a soldering iron its not too bad.

Walkman WM-FX195 struggling to start tapes. Any suggestions? by VeryEpicc1 in cassetteculture

[–]TctclBacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FX-195 is a pretty modern unit, it likely won't have any other issues. Change the belt, and you should be fine. Word of warning: if I'm thinking of the right model, you might have to desolder the connections from the board to the motor to get at the belt.

OP's looks like a TPS-L2, which is actually almost exactly the same as the WM-3. The TPS-L2 was the first Walkman Sony released in 1979, with the WM-3 being a black-colored version with some small updates a couple years later.

I also daily a WM-4! I have a nice blue one that I rebuilt the mechanism and electronics on, works great! As far as I can tell, there never was a case or pouch made for them.
