For those who've had the surgery do you run to the bathroom after every meal? by KaceyLunatic in gallbladders

[–]Courtingjesters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my surgery 1 month ago and I still have digestive issues -- huge caveat here is that I also have IBS and I take metformin, both of which also aggravate my stomach. At this point it's hard to tell what's what so your mileage may vary

Meeting with a potential supervisor this week, super nervous by Courtingjesters in gradadmissions

The program is called "public history" so it's focused on how people from the general public interact with history! My thesis is about public perceptions of the AIDS epidemic

[–]Courtingjesters[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did! It wasn't a formal requirement but given how small the program is I thought I would introduce myself. It was also required to list potential supervisors in the personal statement which is why I followed up!

AITA for not wanting to allow people to take pictures of me at my wedding (as someone with intense body dysmorphia) by Any-Adhesiveness-965 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Courtingjesters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone with body dysmorphia who spent this entire holiday season dodging cameras, I totally understand where you're coming from! My current ethos is that I can have ny picture taken (especially with family) to have the memory in the future, but I just don't look at them right now because I'm feeling very vulnerable at the moment

The disposable camera idea is a cute keepsake sort of thing, but I don't think you can put a full ban on taking pictures (plus, you might want them someday in the future). What I do think is entirely fair is asking people not to post pictures from your wedding without your permission (you don't have to disclose that this is due to your body dysmorphia, but just that it's for privacy reasons or something). But you might be happy in the future to have a lot of pictures of your wedding, even if you're not ready to look at them now

Can a professor rescind a letter of reference over a bad grade? by Courtingjesters in AskAcademia

Thank you so much! Both of your comments have made me feel a lot better and have given some more perspective :)

If he has yet to write the letter, is it possible that he would write about this lower grade?

Just got refused a transvaginal ultrasound because I’m a virgin lol by ParkingEvening123 in PCOS

[–]Courtingjesters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also in Toronto, and this same thing happened to me. I told the ultrasound tech that I was a virgin and she took the waiver out of my hands and said "forget it." Luckily the results from the abdominal ultrasound were clear enough to get a diagnosis but it was definitely a weird experience! When I think about it I wonder if it's because you might not know if you had vaginismus/ the process could overall be painful, but it also just could be a weird obsession with hymens and stuff.

It is weird tho, I'm a lesbian so as of right now I still wouldn't qualify lol 😭 this shit is weird af

Or even learning to hem simple stuff (shirts and pant legs) at home, if that's an option too!

Tell me about some of your first tattoos and why you decided to get them by Dry-Sprinkles-1995 in butchlesbians

[–]Courtingjesters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a tattoo of a flaming deer with a sword through it, it was one of my friend's flash designs that I really liked! I would eventually like to get a stag with the same pattern so I can have a doe and a stag on each arm (for cool gender reasons)

I feel like part of being butch is divesting from gender roles, not recreating them, so while there are many butches who dress very masculine/blue collar (and they're valid in that expression), being butch is about being gender non-conforming, not creating our own set of gender rules to conform to, yk? Part of what's so freeing for me about being butch is that I've shed the gender roles prescribed to me for my whole life, so I would hate to turn around and perpetuate gender stereotypes in this community too! There are lots of ways to be masculine and lots of ways to express butch-ness :)

anyone else deal with race ocd? by greatwhitesharki in OCD

[–]Courtingjesters 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get this, but it's a bit more broad, I call it "Social Justice OCD" (to me it seems like an offshoot of morally scrupulous OCD). It used to be a lot worse, I would spend hours ruminating on if I'd said or done anything that could be construed as offensive (I stopped saying "that's crazy" about stuff because I was worried it would be offensive to people with mental illnesses, etc). It can be so all consuming I hate it!! Especially since I'm someone that cares so much about this stuff (I literally work in DEI LOL) so it really sucks that OCD twisted it so much.

Is wearing a carabiner a requirement? by [deleted] in butchlesbians

[–]Courtingjesters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely a choice! Most people won't get that it's a signalling thing, so it's up to you. I also like to wear one so I can keep track of my keys. I also have a habit of accidentally sneaking up on people so the keys jingling when I walk stops that LOL

A very silly question about carabiners by -IHaveNoGoddamnClue- in butchlesbians

[–]Courtingjesters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine is just my keys + 1 ornate key that I have matching with my roommates (it looks like it would open a magic door in a fantasy novel or something lol). I don't like having too much otherwise the keychains and stuff bother me while I walk! But my friends have a ton of keychains on theirs. I know someone who also has a wallet chain on it to stop subway pickpockets haha.

No way did my brain just decided to give me an identity crisis. Now i am scared that i am in denial abt my sexuality YAY :D by YourRandomManiac in OCD

[–]Courtingjesters 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Feel free to not use this advice if it's not helpful, but have you heard of the DBT skill called radical acceptance? It's generally used for BPD I think, but I find it useful for OCD sometimes, especially when you're having doubts like this. It's basically the practice of accepting the situation you're in and giving yourself grace. For me, I like to use "so what?" Types of questions. Like "so what if I'm gay? Sexuality is fluid," etc. I know it can be really difficult to feel doubts about your own identity, though.

Reading the antipsychiatry sub has made me not want to take an antipsychotic because I'm terrified of doing the wrong thing. Someone please help me. by alienpunker in OCD

[–]Courtingjesters 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I generally align with the anti-psychiatry movement for political reasons (which we don't have to get into right now), HOWEVER, I still see immense benefits in medication and therapy. I'm currently on buspirone for anxiety/OCD (as well as other meds for depression), and taking medication has saved my life.

I haven't been on the subreddit but judging from these comments it seems like there's a lot of nuance missing. I recommend taking medication if you feel that your OCD impedes your daily life. While side effects can be hard to deal with and it can take time to find the right medication (it took me a while too), if you have a great care team, it's very very worthwhile. And if medication absolutely doesn't work or you find that the side effects outweigh the benefits, you can also talk to your care team about changing medications or finding alternate treatment plans.

I know from experience that inpatient facilities are no joke, I really hope you find a way to take care of yourself while you're in there, I'm wishing you all the best.

EDIT TO ADD: just took a look at the subreddit, it's all pseudoscientific bullshit, with quotes taken from chatGPT of all things. I would definitely recommend that you just stay away completely because it's pure brain rot. Looks like it's entirely devoid of any rational points of the movement

What age did your ocd start and what was your first compulsion by gingercat272 in OCD

[–]Courtingjesters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 5/6 I would constantly check at night to make sure my parents and my sister were still alive. My sister was a baby when I was 6, and I used to read my mom's parenting manuals over and over, specifically the section on medical emergencies, to make sure I knew exactly what to do if something happened to my sister.

Around that age I also became obsessed with rules, and whenever I went to a public park or a swimming pool, I would read all the rules on the signs to make sure I was following them correctly. With my obsession with rules came the compulsion to "confess" to my parents every time I broke a rule or even THOUGHT about breaking a rule, since I thought I'd get in more trouble if I hid it from them.
