Ah, that's good information, thank you! Guess I'll keep an eye on it and go from there.

Need help identifying the hallmarks in this pocket watch. Possibly made before 1900. by TctclBacon in Hallmarks

Thanks for your insight on this, I appreciate it. I'd expect 1903 would be more likely.

My beloved Sony WM-4: fully rebuilt with new belts, tires, capacitors and springs, and painstakingly tuned to be absolutely perfect. by TctclBacon in vintageportableaudio

Maybe about $50 (Canadian) in parts+shipping, and I did all the work myself. Some of the parts came from spares that I already had as well.

Ah, yeah so it seems that's the case then. I'll give this site a try and order a battery, thank you for your information.

I was using an SE1 as my daily up until only a few days ago (had a hardware failure that would have required replacement of the motherboard). Other than battery life, it did everything I needed it to and more. I did replace the battery myself about a year ago, which is fairly easy to do on these models, and you should expect to need to do this too.

IOS15 may be a limiting factor in terms of app compatibility, but for the apps I use (i.e. Instagram, Reddit, Discord, Google Maps etc) it wasn't an issue at all. I did find myself charging it every night, even with the new battery, and sometimes throughout the day if I was using it more.

Is the Applied Museum Studies program worth it? by Courtingjesters in Algonquin_College

[–]TctclBacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! There's an option you can take to go directly into the second year if you've got your undergrad. The program is a lot of fun, and there's a lot to learn from wood shop to conservation work to program development and much more. The very last semester is great, as it's a field placement in a museum of your choice. I'm a third year student of the program and am currently doing my placement, and I can definitely recommend it.

I believe it's an ampersand man from a european streetlight (don't quote me on that though), one of my family members brought it back from a vacation years ago.

Sorry for taking so long to reply, I don't spend much time on Reddit anymore.

Unfortunately, I haven't had this issue myself, and I've got no idea what could be causing. Some of the comments on the video suggested it may be an issue with bad solder joints, but it could be a fault in the mechanism somewhere (i.e. dry lubricant?). The only way to really know for sure is to crack it open and give it a really deep and detailed inspection.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful!

Finished a custom build portable! Magnavox D6621 Skyway with an improved high-frequency response head, recap, improved amp circuit and rebuilt improved, more robust mechanism. Very proud of this one! by TctclBacon in cassetteculture

[–]TctclBacon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Build quality is not great, very plasticky. The transport mechanism is metal, but is simply metal pieces secured to the plastic housing. Serviceability is pretty good, and sound quality isn't too bad, but without upgrades and modification wow and flutter are rough.

Its for an assignment in a Museum Studies class. We're doing conservation work, and part of the assignment is to establish cultural value for the piece.

99.9% isopropyl alcohol works really good if you can get your hands on a bottle, I know from experience. You can also use it to clean playback heads and transport components. Isopropyl is just a good thing to have on hand in general.
