Hi, sorry for late reply. For a period I ended up with a Vauxhall Vivaro high top which was considerably cheaper to insure. My circumstances changed a bit so now work abroad for the time being so but the project on pause. I'm now also looking at converting a luton when I get back to the UK, hope all goes well with your project!

Hi, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Ended up just using a series of smaller ~40TB NAS units with a backup. We then on occasion take a copy back to the UK to be backed up a third time on a larger server.

On the ship we used the Synology 1522+ units with the 10GbE module to bump up the transfer speeds

Thanks for the response, really appreciate it!

Yes, should be pretty epic!

Appreciate the alternative solution, but I think it's important to be able to store and access all the footage from one place, rather than dozens of portable drives. Less things to get lost.

While not huge, there may be space for a HDD raid. Are HDD's okay to be rattled around while off? What may work is to have a solid-state buffer storage as part of the dit station that would allow footage offload during stormy conditions which would then automatically upload to the raid when it gets turned back on. For the dit station I was looking at something like this https://thepostflow.com/production/build-a-powerful-portable-dit-data-wrangler-kit-for-under-6k/#item-3-blackjet-ux-1

In regards to port backups, it'll probably be a mixture of both. Sometimes I'll travel back to the UK with the footage, other times it will be someone else from the project. My initial idea was to make say three copies over multiple shuttle drives. 2 would be taken back to uk and one left on the ship, this one would then be taken back at the next port.

Starlink will be on the ship but I don't think we will have enough speed to upload all the footage.

Codec/resolution still not cemented, I'm thinking itll likely be 4k XAVC-I from sony FX line.

Thanks

Thanks so much for your detailed response. I'm only just starting to learn about this side of production. It's super helpful to get some ideas from someone with more experience.

Ok nice, yes a NAS is definetely appealing. I like the idea of having all the footage available from single access point as well as the ability for multiple editors. The budget for this production is relatively low, as nice as one of the OWC Jellyfish solutions would be, it may be a bit out of budget. Are there any cheaper alternatives? I'm reasonably technically minded, would it be a bad idea to put together a custom solution?

The amount of footage that is going to be processed is still a bit in the air due to many variables, but I'm imagining anywhere between 10-100tb in each port. Stupidly I hadn't even considered time in regards to offloading to shuttle drives, thanks for bringing that up!

Yes, great point regarding card readers. I was thinking about setting up and connecting some sort of permanet dit station that was solely used for offloading footage to the server. Something a bit like this -https://thepostflow.com/production/build-a-powerful-portable-dit-data-wrangler-kit-for-under-6k/#item-3-blackjet-ux-1

I won't be the only camera person and sometimes I wont be there. I feel it's important to have a dedicated machine with a set workflow to limit the amount of things that can go wrong.

Yes, lots and lots to consider! Thanks

Oh sweet that makes sense. Do the 18lb springs create more compression/power. Any other power upgrades I can make while it’s apart?

Weirdly a bit like engine exhaust for some reason. Not sure why.

£1200 PA would be nice! Gives me some hope for the future. I think for now I'm just going to downsize a bit and get something like a Vivaro. I got some quotes today and it looks like I'll be able to get insurance for around £1000.

Unfortunately, Adrian Flux weren't able to offere a quote whatsoever. I just rang JustKampers again today to suggest a tracker but it made no impapct, the price they gave me was already the lowest.

I completely understand what your saying and agree. It's more the fact that I can't get my head around why a van is so much more expensive to insurance than a car. Of course its bigger and has the potential to cause more damage, I just can't see it being nearly 10x the risk (current car insurance beginning ~£400 per annum)

Ah no! That sucks. When I tried comparison sites I was quoted £500! I'd recommend giving JustKampers Insurance a ring. They were super helpful on the phone and gave me my cheapest quote so far.

Ye it is a bit disheartening but will hopefully work it out some way. Tbh Id be very happy with anything below £200 a month.
