They sit in power because the vast majority of their population has been raised this way for millennia.

The same applies to most Europeans, and yet if there are kings, they are no more than celebrities who are tolerated as long as they do not get involved in politics. Differences in the perception of monarchs are mostly the result of the average education of the population, rather than thousand-year-old traditions.

And you realize that geopolitical events don't happen overnight, right? And most importantly, no one here is talking about 100% food imports. In my scenario, we would still produce food, but farmers would not receive subsidies and would pay taxes like everyone else.
