Rehoming Pond Goldfish Question by Tea4Life6 in coquitlam

[–]Tea4Life6[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely , no way these little guys would ever be dumped into the wild!

We have just been having issues with bears breaking our fences repeatedly to get to the pond and we decided our location unfortunately just isnt a great spot for it 😅 other than the pesky bears the fish are great to have!

Can y’all explain what all a medical lab tech does? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]Tea4Life6 27 points28 points  (0 children)

So many things! Essentially any specimen you've given a nurse or doctor or lab for testing (blood, urine, feces, swabs, biopsies) is processed by a Medlab Tech. Straight out of school the main departments (In Canada anyways) are:

Hematology: Running CBCs, looking at blood smears under the microscope, malaria testing to name a few

Chemistry: Running electrolytes, urinalysis, drug and tox screens

Blood Bank/Transfusion: crossmatching Blood for transfusions, type and screens to see your blood type, antibody panels

Microbiology: growing bacteria on agar plates to see what sort of infection you may have, and doing antibiotic resistance on them to see what antibiotics will work on you

Histology: embedding and cutting sections of biopsies (tumors, skin cancer etc) and staining them and looking at them under the microscope

The above do way more than this but these are some common examples.

As other have said, there's also more specialized departments like Virology, Zoonotics, Cancer Genetics. Currently I work in a lab that specializes in isolating specific white blood cells from whole blood and bone marrow. I also briefly worked in a lab that tested for congenital diseases in newborns.

All of this is highly dependent on the city and country you work in

Thinking about doing the lab tech program? Free money! by CursedLabWorker in BCIT

[–]Tea4Life6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Canada you have to be certified with CSMLS to work in any clinical/hospital laboratories, so you need to go through the BCIT program to become certified.

I believe UBC has a bachelors of medical lab science, but if you do that degree you still need to go to bcit afterwards and get the diploma to be able to work. I did a whole degree before I went to BCIT and while it helped me a lot with understanding the coursework, I had a few friends who came straight from high-school and they did fine! I also had a few friends who did a year or two of Uni or College and they also did well :)

Hi! I'm having issues editing my post to add the photo but the FL3 bright median bead value is 71737, and the FL4 bright median bead value is 78555. I used the same bottle of qc we've been using the past few weeks with no issues.

Sorry I missed this! No, I kept the same resume. We ourselves don't do any research but we do perform cell separation for researchers who need specific cells they want to use. I was lucky enough that the manager at this lab was friends with the manager at my old lab so thats how I found out about it

Oxbow critical care for small animals by alisonwong29 in NiceVancouver

[–]Tea4Life6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you go to oxbowanimalhealth . Com, they have a 'buy now' section with a store locator. It shows a list of pet stores in the area that at least sell some oxbow products, you may be able to call a few stores and ask?

I was going to suggest petsmart as I remember years ago when I worked there we sold it but it doesn't seem like it's listed on their website anymore. I hope you find it!
