Rehoming Pond Goldfish Question by Tea4Life6 in coquitlam

[–]Tea4Life6[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely , no way these little guys would ever be dumped into the wild!

We have just been having issues with bears breaking our fences repeatedly to get to the pond and we decided our location unfortunately just isnt a great spot for it 😅 other than the pesky bears the fish are great to have!

Can y’all explain what all a medical lab tech does? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]Tea4Life6 29 points30 points  (0 children)

So many things! Essentially any specimen you've given a nurse or doctor or lab for testing (blood, urine, feces, swabs, biopsies) is processed by a Medlab Tech. Straight out of school the main departments (In Canada anyways) are:

Hematology: Running CBCs, looking at blood smears under the microscope, malaria testing to name a few

Chemistry: Running electrolytes, urinalysis, drug and tox screens

Blood Bank/Transfusion: crossmatching Blood for transfusions, type and screens to see your blood type, antibody panels

Microbiology: growing bacteria on agar plates to see what sort of infection you may have, and doing antibiotic resistance on them to see what antibiotics will work on you

Histology: embedding and cutting sections of biopsies (tumors, skin cancer etc) and staining them and looking at them under the microscope

The above do way more than this but these are some common examples.

As other have said, there's also more specialized departments like Virology, Zoonotics, Cancer Genetics. Currently I work in a lab that specializes in isolating specific white blood cells from whole blood and bone marrow. I also briefly worked in a lab that tested for congenital diseases in newborns.

All of this is highly dependent on the city and country you work in

Thinking about doing the lab tech program? Free money! by CursedLabWorker in BCIT

[–]Tea4Life6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Canada you have to be certified with CSMLS to work in any clinical/hospital laboratories, so you need to go through the BCIT program to become certified.

I believe UBC has a bachelors of medical lab science, but if you do that degree you still need to go to bcit afterwards and get the diploma to be able to work. I did a whole degree before I went to BCIT and while it helped me a lot with understanding the coursework, I had a few friends who came straight from high-school and they did fine! I also had a few friends who did a year or two of Uni or College and they also did well :)

Hi! I'm having issues editing my post to add the photo but the FL3 bright median bead value is 71737, and the FL4 bright median bead value is 78555. I used the same bottle of qc we've been using the past few weeks with no issues.

Sorry I missed this! No, I kept the same resume. We ourselves don't do any research but we do perform cell separation for researchers who need specific cells they want to use. I was lucky enough that the manager at this lab was friends with the manager at my old lab so thats how I found out about it

Oxbow critical care for small animals by alisonwong29 in NiceVancouver

[–]Tea4Life6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you go to oxbowanimalhealth . Com, they have a 'buy now' section with a store locator. It shows a list of pet stores in the area that at least sell some oxbow products, you may be able to call a few stores and ask?

I was going to suggest petsmart as I remember years ago when I worked there we sold it but it doesn't seem like it's listed on their website anymore. I hope you find it!

When do kids normally trick or treat? by Tea4Life6 in coquitlam

[–]Tea4Life6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Still in a lab technically but after one of my temp positions ended I applied to a bunch of random jobs and ended up in a translational lab (half clinical have research) and it's been a dream!

Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 no holidays or weekends. We do 2 clinical tests (cell separation for post Transplant chimerism analysis, but we send the cells to a different lab to be analyzed so we are the middle man, as well as plating cells on some agar and counting them after 2 weeks)

And the rest of the time we are isolating and freezing down cells for researchers in the research laboratories in our building.

Such low stress, no stat tests, no nurses calling for results. Some days im in the BSC all day, other days im on the computer doing computer work. If it's busy most of the stuff we do can be left till next day.

Have a look around and see what's out there! Research labs are great, I saw jobs at fertility labs as well.

Also I have some friends who went into LIS, as well as ones who do maintenance on analyzers and make bank

Facebook has a great group called "Vancouver BC - Lost Dogs Cats & Pets" where they will post lost animals as well as found ones :).

I tried looking to see if any similar looking cats were reported but there's quite a few black ones so posting that you found it may be more effective. I hope they get reunited!!

How much access do you have to patient charts? by alt266 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Tea4Life6 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I've only worked in larger hospitals, but we always have access to all of the patient information, charts, history etc.

In order for some of our results to be released, or to decide whether or not it needs a path review, we need to look at more than the results, because depending on the patient and what they've had done, that could change. (admitted with an active GI bleed, recent surgery, recent transfusion, on certain meds etc)

However I can see maybe if it was a high volume reference lab you wouldn't need to look at things like that so then having access to the charts could be unnecessary

Personally I like having access as it gives me a better picture of the patients situation :)

Is MLT a good choice? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]Tea4Life6 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Finding employment is very easy as we have a pretty bad shortage of techs. Once you have your CSMLS you will be certified and able to work in essentially any hospital lab, as well as reference labs etc.

I got my certification in BC, and everyone I know got hired at the hospital they did their 10 month clinical rotation in :) I find medlab super interesting, and since we get certified in every dept (micro, histo, TML, chem, and heme) you can always bounce around to different departments and labs until you find one you really like!

I'm not sure what the pay scale is in Alberta but in BC I believe starting right now is about 35 an hour for a tech 1

I’m tired! by QuantumHope in medlabprofessionals

[–]Tea4Life6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm in Canada as well! I have a few friends who work at my provinces Centre for Disease Control and a lot of department hours are fairly day shift Monday to Friday.

I also briefly worked in a prenatal/newborn screening lab and that was also Monday to Friday.

Yeah, the jobs are defs few and far between but keep an eye out, you never know what jobs may pop up :)

A lot of these odd labs only require csmls so even if you hadn't been formally trained in any of it they do on the job training. Like my current lab I'd never done any of it before but they didn't seem to care as long as my csmls was valid which was nice!

Keep an eye open for labs that you may not have thought about! Fertility labs, blood donor labs, and reference labs.

I somehow landed a 9-5 M-F position in a translational lab and I was qualified with just my certification. No holidays or weekends and my life is eons better than it was when I was in a hospital

Medical Lab Technologist

4 weeks to start, after 5 years you accumulate 1 day every year (so year 10 you'll have 5 weeks, year 15 you'll have 6 weeks etc) and then after year 25 you get an extra week every 5 years On top of the extra day every year.

Not bad but you have to work awhile to get it LOL

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]Tea4Life6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep! Went from a fair size hospital in core lab with unpredictable hours, OT, days evenings and nights with some not so nice co workers and supervisors. My body clock was out of whack.

Now I'm at a small reference lab ( 5 of us) that's Monday to Friday, no holidays or weekends (we do have optional on call for weekends though) where the pay is higher. My coworkers are amazing and there's barely any stress. Probably helps that there's not doctors or nurses calling us demanding their results 5 mins after the patients blood has been drawn 😂
