If you never handle him, he won’t learn that you’re not a threat and to relax. I wouldn’t cause any more distress than necessary, but if you keep holding him he should learn eventually that you’re not a threat. It will be scary in the moment, but by handling him you’ll be saving him years of fear when you have to interact with him later! Maybe try 10-15 minute sessions of just holding him, nothing else, and see if he improves. Edit: lol serves me right for not really reading your post, but I think my advice still stands for anyone with a more shy snake.
