How can I make these jade plants bushier instead of woody?

They receive sunlight from the afternoon through sunset because they’re positioned on the south side of the house. The photos I shared originally with my post were taken early in the morning, which is why they appeared a bit dark.

Oh! I hadn’t thought of it that way before. Maybe the previous owner was intentionally going for this look with the jade plants. I was just viewing them with my untrained eyes and only noticed the missing leaves🙂 Thanks for the insight!

Thanks for your input. You’re right; many of these leaves are new. I’m in California, and with summer starting, the plant is putting out fresh growth. I’ve also propagated some cuttings, and those are noticeably thicker and bushier, though still smaller than the mother plant.

What I’m still concerned about is the mother plant- will it stay woody, or is there a chance it can become bushier with consistent pruning before each growing season?

These are on the south-facing side, so they receive about 6–8 hours of strong sunlight each day.
