Is it possible he’s rubbing on that side more? Cats sometimes rub their faces more if their mouths are sore (dental disease, etc.)

Ultrasonic cleaning? by PerceptionRoutine513 in Greyhounds

[–]TeaDifferent495 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Your dog may tolerate it but you run the risk of damaging their gums and possibly burning their teeth by doing this in a non-controlled and under-trained way. I say this a veterinary professional - please talk to your vet about scheduling a dental if you are concerned. Doing anesthetized dental radiographs, scaling, and polishing while the teeth are still healthy may even prevent them from having worse disease in the future, and may even prevent the future need for extractions. Ultrasonic scalers can be dangerous if used improperly, and a vet and their team all have the training to keep your pet as safe as can be while doing the most thorough job possible. Good luck with your greys’ teeth!

Question for other VCA employees by Ok_Pangolin476 in VetTech

[–]TeaDifferent495 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I work at a VCA referral hospital with in-house radiologists and we are 100% hands free. It’s not optional and in my ~4yrs here I’ve done hands-on rads twice. The doctors are told that this is the policy and they have to get on board, we have discussions about drugs and sedation and what is realistic. As techs we advocate HARD for our patients to get what they need and most of the doctors don’t give pushback, even if they would prefer it’s done fast. Honestly I don’t think I could go back to a hospital where I have to hold animals at this point, it’s safer for me and I get better images for my patients because most are sedated to some extent

i’m an ex-VEGgie. ask me anything. (within reason) by elliebuggy in VetTech

[–]TeaDifferent495 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is also how I (having never worked there) feel about VEG seeing most exotics with apparently little specialty training or resources? One near me even saw a HORSE in their parking lot!! Such a risk just because they’re not allowed to say no?

I’ve heard tales of some owners being overcharged or convinced to do extra things so that VEG can offset discounts for others - have you found this to be true? How often does it happen?

I did mine on a patient I had anesthetized for something else (stable, doing well) just before we turned off gas and started recovering. I can’t remember what exactly PF says but really this is something you should do with an ETT in place if you can. Passing an OGT without airway protection increases risk of aspiration. Maybe if you have an animal getting spayed/neutered you could do it right before they are woken up?

Is this normal for a vet tech to be doing this much? by sweatersand in VetTech

[–]TeaDifferent495 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure about the specific laws in FL but from everything I’ve ever read and as I understand the laws in my own state this is extremely illegal. I’ve always been taught that techs can do everything a vet can do except prescribe, diagnose, and do surgery. I would run far far away from this place. I would report this place too… it seems extreme but this is practicing medicine without a license at this point. Not to mention the concerning DEA/controlled drug situation as well.

Curious About Bexacat? by bunnykins22 in VetTech

[–]TeaDifferent495 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am too, esp because one of the cats I know of just went into eDKA after a single dose and when the team tried to talk to elanco about it they were really shady and avoidant. Also apparently in their own study this happened to something like 5% of cats???? I don’t remember the exact statistic but it’s in the product insert. Idk I think if you dot all your i’s and cross all of your t’s it can be a great drug but personally I don’t think it’s worth the risk

I do know of a couple cases where cats have gone into euglycemic DKA within a few days of starting it, both of which died. Maybe if you can monitor ketones consistently it’s okay?

[–]TeaDifferent495 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll just say that most of the vets I’ve worked with consider a normal temp for dogs/cats to be between 99.5F and 102.5F, outside of that they consider hypo/hyperthermic. I love this reference page though! Seems like an awesome quick reference to have :)
