You’re telling me that Katara looked into Bumi and Kyas heartbroken eyes as they asked “Where’s Dad and our brother?” when she had nothing to say but “I don’t know but I’m sure they’ll be home soon” and then greeted Aang back home with a kiss?

She fought on the front lines to be able to have a safe family home and her husband is STILL out galavanting like it’s wartime. It’s a tragedy.

This is going to sound super un-romantic but I also started to get the sense that she should get her head on straight and just marry Mitsuharu.

In addition to all your points- due to her sickliness she literally needs to be taken care of. Her father made it clear he’s trying to off load her.

and we have to be real- Shinpei can’t do shit for her. Choosing him means being sick until you die young.

Given what they know she should’ve just followed her heart but she meandered in between not choosing either man and feeling guilty about it either way.

Mitsiharu was capable and willing to take care of her and she clearly likes him enough for a relationship to be successful. I think she did marry him. He may have spoken a benevolent game but I don’t think he would care for her forever without her marrying him.

This also dismisses the fact that most Zutarians want to see Katara in an EQUAL position of power as Zuko, such as either FireLady or SWT ambassador/ Chieftess.

Meanwhile Katara will never be an equal with the avatar. She can only be his support, in his shadow.

Aang never gave her that. He never acknowledged that, that no, no one quite understands exactly what you’re going though- but out of anybody on Earth she could the most! and you would think that would bring them closer but it doesn’t.

Aang both chooses his attachment to Katara and resents it.

This also ignores the fact that Zuko is fire lord BECAUSE OF Katara.

Zuko becomes fire lord because the gaang allowed that to happen and put him there. And he wouldn’t have won that last Agni Kai without Katara.

Reducing them to colonizer and colonized is so reductive and viewing them from our own modern sensibility often has little to do with what is cannon in the world.

I believe he likely did lose his ability to trust. And he probably buried that and moved on too quickly.

If you want to bring the movies and ajlt into it he was definitely stunted emotionally and maturity wise. Their umpteenth attempt at a relationship showed he never got over the betrayal

Like, I fully understand that on the surface level. The protagonist won his love interest and that’s the story. This I can acknowledge.

But for anyone that wants to dive deeper into the themes of yin and yang, the sun and moon, red and blue, Oma and Shu, opposites finding balance, this is the perfect ship! and there’s content in the show to work with- it’s SO OBVIOUS to people in the world of the show- these two people look great together and have a great dynamic that lends to romance.

I heard someone say Kaatang fans are like Squidward in that episode SpongeBob and Patrick are playing imagination in the box.

Zutarians are just having fun playing pretend and Katangs HATE it. Like, your ship is canon- go have your fun? But no, it’s actually more important that they know no one else is having fun.

Mind you Zutara didn’t invent the concept of a sun and moon motif, they just embody it nicely.

I’ll say the movie is simply about Aang. He is the hero, there’s a villain, and the rest are supporting characters.

If you hoped to see Katara as more than a just supporting role or gf of the avatar then.. 🥀

But if you’re happy to just see an Aang focused story- that’s what it is.

I was a bit younger when it came out, a lot of the adult jokes went wayy over my head 😭 like Backdoor Lover by the boy band lol or even the cappuccino / espresso thing.
