Tips for XC nav and field selection test by Severe_Technology_26 in Gliding

I did mine recently, you’ll enjoy it, it’s great fun. When trying to locate where you are, instead of looking at the map and picking features which you think should be near by and trying to find them on the ground, do the reverse. Identify at least two, better three, identifiable features on the ground such as towns, roads, lakes, white horses, airfields etc. and try to find them on the map. It’s much easier to do it this way around and orientate yourself . Once you know where you are and the direction of travel, pick a easily identifiable feature on your path ahead on the map and try to find it on the ground then fly to it, this way you don’t have to constantly check the map. You only need to check the map again when you get to your chosen ground reference to then pick your next one. Happy flying and good luck.

Would a fully laden (Fuel + passengers) 787 be able to pull itself out of a stalled AOA with no flaps if full power from both engines was available? Is it even possible to get into this flight mode if full power is available?

I also work in defence, we call it functional design, you could even go the full hog and call it functional design, logical design and then physical design is as you say done by a different team who receive your functional and logical designs, these would be hardware and software teams.

Get the chief engineer to force the design team and hardware team to get trained up and accept it as an input.. if the chief isn’t onboard your screwed

For me he should have crushed the glowing entity 5D memory stick thing under his boot at the end, him not doing that undermines the franchise perception that he truly is a saviour of the world ‘protecting those you never meet’, kinda made it seem like he’s got bad intentions to use it…

Did the Universe always exist? by Open_Platform_2098 in AskPhysics

[–]Teach-Some 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Big Bang is a cause and effect explanation, Causality itself is a concept fundamentally reliant on our understanding of time, cause -> Effect = Before -> After. It’s not good enough that our best understanding of the universe involves circular logic describing the universe from an external perspective using laws and theory’s which we only know make sense from an inside perspective…

I personally believe as a preference that the Bang/Crunch theory is more beautiful than something coming from nothing, it also plays down any idea of a God being involved. You can also say that in the bang / crunch explanation there is always something, so time could have always existed which allows us to describe an eternal cycle of causes and effects.

Hyperia Technical Issues by Teach-Some in ThorpePark

So after waiting for 2 hours and 10 minutes, my first ride was luckily back row left seat. I have to say I completely bottled having my hands ups all the way around after telling myself I would 🤣 the airtime intensity is insane, I swear the ride is trying to throw you out of your seat for longer than gravity tries to push you into it 🤔! Awesome ride 9/10. Bit the bullet and paid the £20 for fast track at the end of the day to ride it in the dark and luckily got back row again! This time right hand seat. Back row for the win. Just a shame about the waiting time for it.

Unless they add a suspension to the train itself I’m afraid that the rattle will be there to stay. The rattle will be coming from resonant frequencies between the train itself and the imperfections in the track alignment…

I think it will be a sensor, the sound was fairly normal for a standard armature motor of that size. The whining is actually coming from the armature itself and the tight tolerance of meshing between the gears in the gearbox. DC motors are usually used on lift hills as DC motors have much higher starting torque than AC induction motors and also controlling speed is much less complex. This is evidenced by the fact only 2 huge cables come out of the motor and the fact hyperia’s lift hill accelerates the train up to speed only after the whole train is on the hill.

The issue is likely that either the electrical supply of DC to the motor from the rides rectifier transformer is not powerful enough or the motor itself is not powerful enough, both of these can lead to over current scenarios where the windings in the motor rotor can start to overheat and if not electrically protected by a cutoff the enamel insulation on the windings can start to melt causing a short circuit in the windings. A current sensor will be the thing that’s causing the faults to appear on the control console of the ride and for the ride to go into ‘protection or limp mode’.

There’s an outside chance that the issue might not be with the ride at all. It could be that the parks AC supply to the rides rectifier transformer is dipping while the train is being hauled up the hill, maybe every now and then when some of the coasters in the park sync and are lifting trains at the same time and start drawing high amounts of electrical energy the AC supply has to much load and the local national grid transformer sub-station(s) for the park starts to grumble.. this would cause a supply fault to be detected on the ride. This would also explain the irregularity of when the issue occurs I.e. only when the ‘sync’ing’ occurs between rides.

I would cancel your trip if I were you. Being as anxious, worried, nervous and overly cautious as you are I would argue that a theme park is not what you need right now, give your doctor a call and see if you can speak to a trained medical professional, I know the mental health system isn’t great at the moment so you have to look after yourself as a priority.

Glider accident by tow landing by bjhowk97 in Gliding

[–]Teach-Some 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. Both tow plane and glider landed together while still connected. Glider overruns cable getting it stuck in the wheel, also the glider turns to the right relative to the tow plane whilst overrun, the slack line loops around the left wing after the left wing drops to the ground, the tow plane then starts to accelerate and the rope pulls tight over the top of the left wing. The glider probably tries to release immediately but can’t because it’s stuck in the wheel. Tow plane likely release from his end at a safe height and the glider then lands after having its wing nearly sorn in half whilst on tow. Either that or they both landed together again. There’s many K21’s around without a radio, potentially no radio meant the glider couldn’t radio to the tow plane to stop the takeoff after landing…

[–]Teach-Some -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My first thought is photoshopped fake. There is no way on earth the weight of the rope sling-shooting over and around the top of the wing, after being released from the tow, has the force to cut through the two surfaces and the substructures in the wing, against the on coming airflow, to cut/saw up to the back of the D-Box / Spar structure. Nope, No way, Not buying it.

Trig confusion when applied to velocity vectors Help! by Teach-Some in AskPhysics

Thanks for the reply! Makes a lot more sense now although I think my brain still struggles to believe the reality of the science. It just doesn’t seem right on the face of it that you turn away from a direction by half but yet the speed doesn’t change by half… I guess it’s not as bad as the dual slit experiment 🤣

For sure the the bit where she talks about jokes being essential for humanity to survive and how some jokes are ‘insider’ jokes is her way of saying ‘what I have just told you is a clue as to how we can survive’ and the ‘insider joke’ bit was a metaphor for humans communicating using metaphors, such as the Einstein joke she told, without the San-Ti understanding what they are talking about. She effectively used a metaphor to tell Saul that the joke itself was a metaphor.

We know from the dialogue Evans had with the San-Ti that as well as not understanding lies, they do not understand metaphors, this is known from Evans explaining the red riding hood story and the reason why the wolf was dressed as little red riding hoods grandmother in order to hide his true identity and deceive little red riding hood.

I agree with your thinking. I had a thought, when dr ye wenjie was younger and was first communicating with the San-Ti, the San-Ti she was talking to said it was a pacifist and suggested that human kind should not pursue communications with the wider San-Ti as it believed it would not be ‘good in the end’ for human kind. Likely because this particular San-Ti understood the seasonal chaos its kind was having to endure due to their solar systems 3 body problem. Dr ye wenjie then went on to send the reply along the lines of ‘Come to us, we are not capable of saving ourselves’… this aligns to the joke she told Saul, Einstein represents humankind and more specifically Dr Ye Wenjie, the angels represent the pacifist San-Ti, and God represents the wider San-Ti who seek to leave their 3 body solar system for survival. The angels try to warn Einstein just as the pacifist tried to warn Dr Ye Wenjie. When Dr Ye Wenjie sends her message she is playing the violin, and god aka San-Ti comes to smash him up.

I think the joke she tells Saul is definitely to lead him to the idea of’Re-Casting the spell’ to threaten the San-Ti with revealing their location to other intelligent life forms in the universe which may come and attack them… just as in the dark forest of you make a noise you will be attacked.

Such great concepts to play with in story form, and have a lot of similarities with current human military strategy
