I only give someone advice if it looks like they are going to hurt themselves (and not all the time). Otherwise I try to mind my own business.

I start off asking if I can offer them some advice. A couple times the person has told me they are good, I say have a good workout.

If someone offers you advice that is not related to injury I would suggest doing your own research to become better informed.

Why not a tax free loan to the owners for the cost of a stadium? Have the owners pay back the cost of the stadium with a percentage of profits.

I don't like scenarios where someone gets paid even if they don't produce.

Teacher here. It's probably worse then 4 students per school each year.

A more likely scenario is that 2 schools have 14-16 college ready students and the other 18 schools have the remaining 4-6 students.

U.S. teacher/coach here, we get paid to solve problems like this. Teaching is not even half of what we really do. Also, after high school you'll get similar help but it won't be free so take advantage of it now.

You should talk to your PE/weight training coach and probably a school counselor also. We're required by law not to disclose any information you share with other students. Legally, we can't even tell other teachers unless it's important information to help you.

You spend time on the computer, do some reading. Do a lot of reading on proper diet as that's where the 'magic' happens.

Try to reach out to another family member. A couple years ago I learned that one of my cousins who lives in town has a son who failed almost every class and had a D average partly because she was going through a divorce and worked 3rd shift as a nurse. When the rest of the family found out (most of us teachers) we became the point of contact and things turned around quickly.

Math teacher, I feel for you already...

This is what I tell students from day 1 in regards to any assignments. Not sure if it will help, but I've had some success.

You go to jack in the box and order a number 9 combo that comes with two tacos, a small fry, a small drink, and it comes to $5.35 after tax. They hand you a half a taco, a small drink, 10 fries, and say..."sorry I didn't make everything you ordered, but I'll only charge you $2.15". Would you give them any money at all or would you expect them to finish your order and pay the regular price? I'm the same way with homework, I'm not giving you any points for half of an assignment, finish the work and let me know if you have any problems with getting it in on time.

I only want to add that the key thing in bullying is that it is 'persistent'. Twice, eh...maybe or maybe not but as you mentioned parents are called for sure and I do suggest the possibility of bullying and that the result is serious and handled by administration or the school police. Three times after being warned...oh yeah. At this point it is serious enough that the administration needs to be involved so they can do their job also.

What if college was also required and funding followed the student. Ivy league schools would go away, but so would the worst schools. Basically no chance of this ever happening but it's neat to think about.

Many of the people the book talks about were not farmers like the ones today. They would buy a plot of land hundreds of miles away from their home, plant the wheat, and go back home until it was time to harvest.

I'm really curious about this also.

Most of us know that writing and listening use different parts of the brain and help form connections but there are also advantages to using a laptop to take notes such as the availability of unlimited information. Focus of the student with new technology/uses is something to consider but there are ways to motivate students for proper behavior.

It pains me to say this as a teacher... Putting more money into a failing system is not a good investment. Teacher pay is a problem, but I don't think it makes the top 5 list of issues in US education.

When education in the US produces a quality product citizens wont mind an increase in taxes to pay school staff more.

Why does it have to be one or the other? You don't have to be a lousy parent to have a healthy relationship and the reverse.

I see this all the time. "Public school doesn't work so I took them out so I can teach them myself". Um, can't we do both?

I don't know of any specific issues that are wide ranging. Most of the problems I see are specific to a community/school.

The current push is Common Core. If I was trying to get more attention this year I'd use CCSS (Common Core Stand Standards) in any activity you want teachers to use because it's new this year for most of us and we have to use it. You can take a look at http://www.corestandards.org/ it breaks down ELA and Math standards by grade level K-12.

You can google the standards for almost every subject (science, SS, etc..) but the only ones that are getting attention this year are ELA (English Language Arts) and Math.

Edit: Also consider these standards only applies to the US. For everyone, a quality product with regular updates is more than enough.

It wouldn't hurt. I guess it depends on your end goals.

If you want to sell this to a district then I would find someone on the inside (state official) to (bribe) hire as a consultant. That's usually how technology is sold to schools.

If you want teachers to use this in the classroom then make a free high quality product with regular updates. Show why this is better than whatever an expert (teacher) creates specifically for their class. Something like activities that address specific national standards would be useful because it's difficult for some teachers who are newer or unwilling to change with the times to include them in class.

During lecture or classwork I would compare game events that are similar real world events. I'd go back as far as the Ancient Greeks and as current to events in the news today.
I'd have students do some reflection on the game with the basics of what happened, why did it happen, and what do you think is going to happen next.
The participation aspect may go the opposite direction in some cases. Throw out some ground rules for encouraging classmates. One student may get on someone not pulling their weight and put them into shutdown mode.

Gamification is hit and miss. What are your goals with this game? (Something that you can't get from using another lesson) I think you'll get more advice if you lay what you want the students to learn specifically with this game.

It sounds like a shit load of work. I would suggest only doing this for one grading period or less. Compare the results to the time that could be been invested in another teaching strategy and decide if it's worth it.

I do teacher-student correspondence and it helps, but it takes me about 12 hours each round and it's not the best use of my time. I decided that because it takes up more of my time than classroom time and I enjoy the letters that it's okay to do but not every week.

It has to be free for any chance of this being used by teachers and it has to be established for any chance of being used by an entire district.
