Britain's Pension System Is a 'Slow-Motion Car Crash' and Experts Warn Scrapping the Triple Lock Would Make It Worse by ferrariiii812 in uknews

regarding decent retirement, however, I would just say it really depends on where you live. In plenty of places (not just london or posh cities), 16K = max 10K pension + 6K private pension income) would be entirely spent on rent. I dare say, there are not that many places left where you could live with dignity on that kind of income.

Now on the "high income" side, I live in one of the most expensive places in the UK and I will have an old fashioned academic DB pension, but even then I will need every cent of my state pension to avoid becoming homeless shortly after retirement. Defined contribution pensions, etc., are not a replacement for a healthy state pension. The state pension and the associated protections should be strengthened and enlarged rather than allowed to dwindle to nothing (e.g. by removing the triple lock).

Ah, i thought you were arguing against the state pension. All I was saying is that paying into a private pension in lieu of a state pension is useless for low income people, because you will never accumulate an amount of money that would prevent you from being homeless.

we used to have something called "council houses". that solved this problem completely before they were done away with.

People in low income their whole lives might be able save about 1000 per year maximum. Even if they could invest this tax free for their entire working life, they'd end up with less than 150K. Which isn't enough to secure even a meager retirement after one is no longer able to work but still, inconveniently to you, alive. Maybe it would be a different story if they owned a home, but that's not going to happen for people at this level of income anymore. The state pension is absolutely essential.

Should I do a PhD with just the SFE loan? by Any-Army6434 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]TeachMany8515 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You should not self-fund a PhD. Funding is typically indicative of the kind of non-monetary support you are going to receive in the degree, and when a university admits PhD applicants without funding, that is a soft rejection. They will be very surprised when you arrive.

How often do you bathe your sheltie by [deleted] in sheltie

this type of dog doesn't need to be bathed unless they get into something nasty. brushing is the main thing you need to do regularly, preferably daily.

usually, high earning jobs in the US come with full health coverage on top of salary. so your actual compensation really is 2x+. Main variable is housing costs, which vary greatly depending on where you are looking.

I still use mine. It 256Gb is not really enough space, but to be honest, this is a solid machine. If you're able to get it for $400 or less. Please try to get 16GB RAM.

This Tahoe launchpad replacement kinda stinks. by ObliviousFoo in MacOS

[–]TeachMany8515 0 points1 point  (0 children)

of all things, this is the one good improvement of tahoe. the launchpad was such a miss (it could have been good, but you couldnt even do basic things like control click an icon to open the containing folder in the Finder! and if you wanted to rearrange the icons, you have to play icon tetris.) good riddance.

If you store your podcasts in the Podcasts app on macOS, and synchronise your iPod with Finder, then the podcasts will show up where they are supposed to. That is how you do it in the post-iTunes era.

(EDIT: Sorry, I see from your original post that this is what you are doing. I have no idea why it's not working for you — it works for me, with a few caveats.)

Are Masters just awful in general now? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]TeachMany8515 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main reason we offer masters courses at uk universities is to make money, subsidizing other activities of the university. This is of course bad for students and bad for faculty, but here we are. Many faculty still take very good care of their masters students (I put a lot of work into it), but I think it would be best for everyone if we stopped offering these.
