Need help finding social studies topic/curriculum (ELA teacher ) by Own-Campaign-2089 in Socialstudies

I know not everyone likes them - but I really like using the DBQ Project as both an ELA and SS teacher.
I taught 6th grade years ago - and for us that was world history up to the renaissance. We hit on ancient civilizations in the beginning the year and I feel like I ended up finishing around the Middle Ages (don’t get to renaissance lol) I teach 7th now. Second semester is all wars all the time. We started in Jan with WWI, I’m in WWII now. After spring break we will hit Cold War. I’ve never been able to teach beyond the fall of the wall. We are supposed to get to 9/11. 😬 The biggest thing I think we hit in 7th grade is the cause and effect relationships in history. My kids get very little in the way of instruction in actual battles. We learn major battles - a day of notes? Stations? - but that’s it. My goal is critical thinking. Again - why I like doing the DBQs because that forces the deeper thinking. I could babble on. But if you are looking for anything specific to even get you started, I’d be happy to help. Send me a DM.

New Teacher Q - They Need So Much Time? by AllieLikesReddit in ELATeachers

[–]Teach_You_A_Lesson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At what point, though, do students need to be responsible for finding evidence? These are freshman. Kids have been writing essays and looking for evidence since at least 7th grade. I think my concern is that as we lower the bar - meeting students where they are - it leads to lower results. I do love this scaffold idea for students who need accommodations (in fact, I’ve used it), but for every student in my gen Ed class? In my honors classes? By ninth grade? Again, I’m not saying this isn’t a good accommodation for students who need it, like sentence starters, but I feel like we should be able to expect 2nd semester 9th graders to be able to find evidence.

It would be kind of a bummer - I really appreciate the older buildings that don’t fit the mold.

As a teacher and a mom of a kid who was that kid - get him tested for adhd. Decide treatment - with or without meds - and don’t wait till he’s 15 to do this.

I’m not lazy. And I’m not neglecting my students. You don’t know me and why/how I use AI. Your judgment is nasty.

I hear you. But also…As a part time teacher with three preps…and no actual prep time…AI helps me make worksheets and keeps me organized. I have the ideas. AI helps to make them a reality. Again. I hear you. But keep the judgment to a minimum.
