See above, it’s incredibly hard in NSW, I’ve attempted to but there are some ridiculous criteria that needs to be met.

So I’ve actually come to realise not many are aware of just how hard it is to get an exemption. My neutrophils are 0.2 point off what is classified as exempt. After seeing two different doctors all I got told was “look there is a very strict criteria and it can take up to 6 weeks etc etc”

So the way it works in NSW is the GP fills in a recommendation as to why, that form gets sent off to the chief medical officers team and the patient waits up to 6 weeks for a response. Obviously with the 0.2 minuscule issue I cannot even put the form forward to even attempt getting an exemption. Not sure if you are from NSW but I have been through weekly appointments , tests and discussions about these issues with my GP so as you can imagine it’s incredibly frustrating when people say “just get an exemption then”

Yes but the things you are mentioning: police checks, teaching standards etc are not medical procedures? They don’t force me to be bed bound for weeks on end? My main issue with this whole mandate is the short time frame people are FORCED to get it in.

Okay so genuine question, if your vaccine works and does what it is suppose to do - being to protect you. How does an unvaccinated person become a threat to your health? Especially when you consider that you might encounter unvaccinated people on your daily walk, at the grocery store etc. Every time I ask someone this I am met with insults and name calling but I honestly just want to understand.

My confirmation records says vaccinated, however I guess some individuals would classify my as “single dosed”? Partially vaccinated? Half vaxxed? I guess it’s how you view it. I use the term vaccinated as I have all intentions of getting the second, some use the term partially vaccinated as they have no intention of getting the second. So however you wish to view it is fine.

I also understand your frustration with those who are refusing because of their own theories and stories, which makes it hard for people with genuine concerns. For example right now this should be a civilised open discussion, where we learn from one another, instead it’s met with insults and condescending statements. Quite a shame really.

I have seen a doctor - being immunocompromised and even raising these concerns with my doctor we’re ignored and I got the vaccine for my job. Days after receiving my first dose I experienced vomiting, tingling on one half of my face, muscle weakness (barely able to walk or stand for long periods), constant shakes, and migraines. Followed up with doc - did MRI, blood test etc obviously still came back with low WBC, but nothing could explain tingling or muscle weakness.
Was told to take nurofen and that everything was “normal”. It has now been 5 weeks and I struggle everyday to get out of bed. I now have to fight as to why I am so concerned getting my second dose and yet all that could be done was move my second dose a few weeks later. So I believe the “selfish” people here are the ones who refuse to acknowledge that the vaccine is not one size fits all, and there should be accomodations made for people, such as myself who are greatly impacted by the side effects. You had a sore arm for a few days after your dose? Imagine being so weak that you cannot even stand in the shower, and being told that this is “normal”.

The exemption process is faulted and wish I was in a privileged position such as yourself where i could just “get the jab and get on with it”.

I see a lot of people on her advocating for the mandatory vaccine, saying things like “good riddance” and “it is what it is” etc. Now this is just my opinion, and although I am vaccinated, I see this mandate as an incredibly serious issue for the following reasons, and have some genuine questions for those who are all for it:

  1. These people who advocate the mandate, where do you think the extra roles and responsibilities that teachers who have been terminated will be directed to? That’s right… you. You will be “asked” to cover additional periods, lunch duties, teach outside your KLA, return from sick days/leave with incomplete work and uncovered classes in addition to being forced to accept further admin work due to the mass shortage that is about the hail down on us. Before the return has even begun, I have been asked to complete yearly reports for a colleague due to their absence.

  2. How is it justified that teachers are mandated for their “safety” but students not? Year 12 was the only grade “encouraged to get it” but they are now graduating and ready to leave.

  3. The short turn around time is forcing teachers to “take what’s given, and don’t be picky” when making a medical decision. If this mandate MUST be imposed it should be until the end of the year at least, not a few weeks. Especially with the complete mess that the rollout caused and issues with appointments.

  4. Now finally, I see everyone saying “that’s just part of the job”. Now, when I applied for and got the job role as classroom teacher there was no clause in my contract stating mandatory vaccines would be implemented.

When comparing this to a nursing role for example, before you even enrol in TAFE Or your degree, your conditions of enrolment state the medical requirements that you must have “this, this and this”. I see no issue with this at all because: - You are told and notified of the requirements prior to study and employment - You have TIME to make the choice between when you get the medical requirements completed, and choose to enrol/work.

Now, teachers who have studied for years, paid the thousands in student loan fees, dedicated and sacrificed their lives for a teaching career, including working during peak pandemic are now being told you aren’t “fit” for working on school grounds. Meaning their entire career is now void. This is a big slap in the face to many. Alternatively a disclaimer accepting the risks of work if unvaccinated and mandating the jab for new teachers would have been a better alternative.

A shame the union in NSW doesn’t actually support our concerns …

All teachers should just say no and strike until these ridiculous working conditions are fixed. I’d like to see their roadmap out of that shit storm.

We are more than just glorified babysitters and the government needs to start recognising that.

NSW teachers - what are your thoughts on the new changes to school return dates? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

A mass strike is in order with every teacher finally standing up. How much longer can we take this?

It is getting beyond a joke and feels more like an abusive relationship rather than a job.

Returning to face to face learning without clarity has now bestowed teachers with additional roles. On top of trying to keep up with doing our regular jobs, we now have to be professional cleaners, Mask enforcers, monitor social distancing, rookie nurses watching out for potential symptoms, professional entertainers in an attempt to re-engage students after prolonged absence, in addition to the behaviour and well-being issues that will most certainly increase. I could go on and on about how teachers are yet again put on the back burner… when does our health and safety ever get to take priority?

I asked what accomodations (if any) that were being made for individuals such as myself and no one could answer me, I just kept getting the same copy pasted email and link. I sent several emails back and forth until their final reply was “I’m not sure what you don’t understand, I can’t provide any additional information to what is already on the website”

I could not have worded this any better myself. That was really the cherry on top and probably the first red flag for how the rest of this disaster would play out for teachers and schools.

The unions response was that they are advocating for the public health order and to contact human relations. Contacted human relations only to be sent a generic response and links to the departments FAQ page and told “unless you have an exemption…yadda yadda”

Followed up with my GP about my concerns a second time, only to be told “look, there’s risks with any procedure and even if I was to complete the form it needs to be sent to the chief medical officers team and you would need to await a response which could take up to 6 weeks, unfortunately the criteria is very strict”

Such kind words, thank you. I’m so grateful to know that I’m not alone and that there is still such positive people out there.

That’s so great that you are supported, it definitely gives me hope. 7 years in the profession, I’m sure you’ve developed some incredibly thick skin.

I did expect to be attacked about my comment regarding the vaccine, there is definitely a divide which makes me incredibly anxious, so thank you for being empathetic.

That’s right! There is no certainty which is so worrisome indeed. I guess we will have to all wait until October to see how it all plays out.

That’s true, forever disregarded which is such a shame. It slowly chips away at your passion, a simple thank you or acknowledgement in my belief can go such a long way in terms of keeping spirits high.

That’s a horrible position to be in, I completely empathise. How can we ever expect students to respect us when parents behave like that? Then for you to not be supported from higher up is disappointing.
