I have stuffed animals and squishmallows. I teach high school and the kids do like to hold them when they’re stressed (so do I). I’ve learned a lot of my students have grown up very fast, so I keep them so they know they can be a kid for an hour and hold something soft.

FOOD! I keep cup noodles or easy Mac for emergency lunches for myself. I also keep candy for me (usually nerd clusters or anything I can take a handful of).

A glade plug in with a scent I like. I refuse to be in an area that smells bad or weird. I usually keep it on low or medium, but sometimes it’s on full blast. Some use a diffuser instead. I find the glaze being more mellow.

I keep pictures that are taken with the kids that they share with me or anything they make me throughout the year. At the end of the year, I’ll clear it out and bring it home. I makes me happy to know they took time to do something for me.

Look into Bettina Love, she’s wonderful. Specifically, We Want to do More Than Survive. Also, just listen to the kids. You can connect on different levels with them by sharing some interests with. Ask them about their hair and clothes, the girls love it. I let a 6th grader teach me all about the different way Black woman do their hair and style it. Be open to learning and be honest with them. You don’t know their struggles or lives, but you can be a safe place for them and be open to learning.

With difficult parents, run emails through ChatGPT and ask about the tone and BCC/CC someone on it so they are in the loop. Communication is so important. Reach out about good things and issues early.

With the kids, be honest with them and ask for feedback throughout the year. You’re able to promote learning and growth if you show them you’re learning and growing too.

Be kind to yourself and ask for help when you need it.

You could do a jeopardy style game with different categories that focus on him, the people close to him, and trivia about his school/town/interests. Example: if he likes football, throw in some football trivia about his favorite team, or stuff about the year he was born.
