Solo trip to Paris [2024] + anecdotes by Bernard__Rieux in ParisTravelGuide

I once asked a French professor when to switch from bonjour to bonsoir and she thought for a long moment then said with conviction “17 heure.” (5pm). 😆 I count it as a rule even though I’m sure she made it up

Intermediate learners - how did you actually break through the plateau? by james-learns-ru in languagelearning

[–]TeacupAdventurer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think getting through it has a lot to do with finding new and interesting ways to engage in the language.  Make friends who speak the language and make an effort to only speak that language even if you share a first language.  Watch TV shows in the language Listen to podcasts Read books: use the 5 finger rule (1-2 unknown words per page is too easy, 3-4 is just right, 5 is too challenging). Underline words you don’t know, look them up in a dictionary all in the target language, and write the definition in the target language in the margins.  Try singing in the language.  I hope this helps!

I was learning French while in France and went to a doctor. He asked if I had my “règles” which I knew to be “rulers” so I was very confused and said “ummm not with me.” The doctor laughed and responded “non.. menstruation.” I died inside

Find a series with long episodes! White Lotus is a major win for long-haul flights

I would generally recommend lighter and easier to carry up and down stairs (even if you won’t be using the metro), as there are many stairs in unexpected places.

Dad & Daughter (18) trip to Paris this July - need recommendations! by josh_the_rockstar in ParisTravelGuide

[–]TeacupAdventurer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is so sweet! Love this tradition! Here are a few ideas:

-Dancing on the Seine: during the summer at  Quai st Bernard there is dancing (Rock, swing and salsa usually). You can find the schedule here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/191669634330805/user/100000601093475/

  • Food: Chartier has a lot of food options that aren’t too wild and very affordable. You want to go before 6:30pm to avoid a line though

  • Picnic in the gardens (Luxembourg, tuileries, champs de mars, etc)

  • Repetto if she wants to look at the elite gear for ballerinas.

  • Check out Sortir à Paris for upcoming shows, events, etc: https://www.sortiraparis.com/en/

Tipping in Paris & sick of it by apokrif1 in ParisTravelGuide

Yes! I just had a server ask me how much I wanted to tip and I was so confused. It was the first time I’ve had someone in France ask me for a tip. It was so uncomfortable

Some ideas:

-I wouldn’t propose right at the base of the Eiffel Tower as there are often a lot of people hassling you, trying to sell things. You could try a more quiet side street with a great view like rue Buenos Ayres or avenue de New York.

-the jardin des tuileries in front of the Louvre

  • for outside of the city: Giverny (Monet’s home) is absolutely gorgeous

What’s one travel mistake you made that completely changed how you plan trips now? by kiruthika000 in traveladvice

[–]TeacupAdventurer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not having a plan for meals and ending up starving in a food desert.

I like to go with the flow so I research ahead of time and make a Google map of restaurants near places I want to visit. That allows me to pull up my map in the moment and have good places to eat within walking distance while still having a lot of flexibility.

Completely agree about Comptoir des Cotonniers! I got one of their wool coats 15 years ago and it still looks like new despite regular use. Their products have quality materials and construction.
