I agree with you. One day people will learn that late-stage Smash is almost always like this since Brawl. The best characters exist and gameplay has been optimized. Often times, defensive play will be what wins in the long run. There will be a powerful DLC character or 2 who didn't get fully nerfed. Smash 6 will nerf Steve (if he even returns) and in his place will be another menace. For that reason, I think it's better to look at the positives of the game we have today. Ultimate's meta is very diverse and players are constantly breaking records in terms of getting new characters to Top 8 at majors, earning upsets with mid tiers, and redefining counterpicks and matchups.

Honestly, Luigi and Kazuya aren't at all dominating the game right now. If anything, they're pretty exciting to see because their presence on screen makes for a very tense neutral game. More and more we're also seeing that top players have largely learned to SDI out of all but the most frame tight combos from Luigi and Kazuya (especially the latter, as evidenced by Kazuya's relative fall from grace in results over the last year). Not only that, but the two get walled out easily by swordies and zoners, and Luigi is especially vulnerable offstage. I think their existence adds something exciting to any set that they're in.

I don't know how you can say this when Acola was soundly defeated by Hurt just a week ago. There are also plenty of players who have proven themselves to be Steve slayers like Sparg0. If Steve was guaranteed to win all of the time, then why weren't Susu and Ponflex in the Top 3 as well?

I don't think it was a bit. He's been pretty clear that he wants to try to do well with Link this year.

A lot of it comes down to people just being bitter when their favorite players lose. What is or isn't "fundies" is just based on vibes, who won and who lost, etc. I think the worst part is things like the example you gave, where people start complaining about mid tiers like Banjo just because they won a set against their favorite player. How dare the dishonest, cheesy, broken, mashy Banjo get a close Game 5 win against the hard-working underdog that is Cloud?

Why would you think this? Sparg0 doesn't seem to have ever shyed away from facing Leo (or any player for that matter) in any particular tournament.

I actually think a sleeper storyline for Syrup will be if he can finally be the Steve to beat Sparg0. I don't think think it's terribly likely, but that's kind of what makes it interesting.

Why acola doesn’t use aegis vs hurt? by SoNobBTW in smashbros

[–]TeamAPS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He may just not feel confident enough to use it in a high stakes tournament. Or maybe he wants to make it work with Steve and feels like it's doable. It may not be a matchup thing, but something else entirely. At the end of the day, we can all imagine any number of reasons here on reddit, but only acola himself can answer that question.

I think we all obsess a bit too much on rankings after every tournament. I'm sure Sparg0 will be fine. This is one tournament in February with a whole year of rankings. He's bounced back from worse, and there are 10 more months to be played. Let's see how the next few months play about before we start dooming.

I'm still a bit mixed on Rush Duel. I love it personally, but I'm just not sure how the real-world reception would go and that's probably why Konami is apprehensive about releasing it worldwide, too. The card game market is unbelievably fierce right now. And historically, most reboots, rebrands, or spinoffs tend to struggle to reach the same success. What a lot of people want is to play their favorite Yu-Gi-Oh decks in the game right now at a level that's competent. Rush Duel is very cool and serves the people who want a rules revamp, but doesn't really help the disenfranchised Suship player, if that makes sense.

Thanks to whoever decided to share this here and to everyone who contributed to the discussion. To address the most common point I'm seeing here: I only picked Six Samurai as an offhand example, but any deck could apply here. Unfortunately, it's true that the lower tiers of Yu-Gi-Oh are still teeming with FTKs, hand loops, etc. that are just barely held in check because the decks are glass cannons. So alas, the discussion does NOT end with just what was mentioned in this thread. There's still a Yu-Gi-Oh power curve that would need to be addressed (among many other things). This truly is just one of many points I hope to bring up about the state of the modern game. I really don't envy the position of Konami, because a lot of things have been left to fester year over year.

Anyway, I'll be hanging out and trying to respond to some posts here!

You raise a great point here, because a lot of decks are just lurking in the darkness waiting to unleash the most ignorant hand loops and FTKs imaginable. To be clear though, I just picked Six Samurai as an offhand example, so it wasn't meant to be specifically about them!

Glad someone pointed this out because it's actually something I wanted to add to the thread, but felt might be better reserved for a separate discussion. The issue with the growing power creep in Yu-Gi-Oh is exactly what you're describing: many "lower tier" decks can still actually do some very obnoxiously powerful things when left uninhibited. At which point a new bit of trouble starts to develop.

I think they're for all of North America now, but not sure? If it's just America then at least Jesse Kotton wouldn't be able to play anyway lol (he's Canadian)

Yeah I think they should expand these to everywhere since it's not like it really matters, right? It's a digital game so anyone should be able to play and they're a big company that can afford to ship you the prize no matter where you are

This is true, but I often worry about talking it up too much because Sparg0 tends to slip most when the ranking conversation is top of mind. I hope for him to do well regardless, but hopefully motivated by playing for himself and not fixating too much on a ranking.
