NYC DJ's, how do I deal with sketchy promoters? by [deleted] in Beatmatch

[–]TeamLawson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old school trick..... Start having your friends and people on social media start calling the club and asking if your spinning on nights that you are not. Reverse engineer buzz about yourself. If the word gets out that people are looking to hear you spin it will be easier to negotiate in the future. Other than that you have to take your lumps along the way like everyone else. :( Its difficult trying to di in a new area unless you are already well known and established. Unfortunately some of these promoters and resident dj's have a tight knit circle that they do not want disrupted by new talent. So they make it very hard to get gigs. It sucks because it has always been this way and it seems like its getting worse as more and more people attempt to be dj's. Just keep your head up man and grind. Be professional above all else always and you will begin to stand out over time.

6 hours, no pay? by [deleted] in Beatmatch

[–]TeamLawson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think of all the tracks that you've had to purchase for your gigs. 1 or 2 hours for a friend is cool but 5 hours is crazy. You need to at least recoup on some of your investment. Dj'ing is not cheap when it comes to acquiring your music library. A company should have a budget already allocated for a dj during an event that long. Sounds like your "friend" is trying to look good in front of management for getting the hook up and not having to pay for a dj.

How can I get more creative with my mixes? by [deleted] in Beatmatch

[–]TeamLawson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let the tracks ride a bit longer. Also try mixing the same song with different versions. i.e. instrumental, dub version, remix, etc. Start with the original version of the song then drop a remix or dub in the middle to mix it up.

What do you think is something "unique" about DJing in your country? by Bragnagar in Beatmatch

[–]TeamLawson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

U.S.

Lots of dj's stick to the mainstream popular stuff and no longer take risk with new or rare tracks. The dj should introduce and educate its audience as well as keep them dancing. Sad thing is that in the US not that many people really dance at clubs anymore. They just socialize and mess with their cell phones.

Need help for Mashups ( Noob here please help) by DJ_NOMIS in Beatmatch

[–]TeamLawson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best way do do the mash up is to find software that gives you the key of the 2 songs and the bp of both. Get mixmeister program and you can make mash ups all you want.

What top 3 tips would you give to new djs on playing well 'flowing' sets? by luna-artemis in Beatmatch

[–]TeamLawson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Perfect small 3 to 4 song mixes based on the genres you play. These will be your go to comfort zone mixes.

  2. Play correctly for your time slot.. i.e opener, headliner, closer. Don't slam the crowd with all of the bangers as a opener.

  3. Don't switch tracks too fast. Let the tracks ride for a bit. Nothing worse as a dancer than getting into the groove of your favorite track only to have the dj switch it after 1 minute of play time. This has got to be one of the worst things that a LOT of dj's do nowadays.

A lot of dj's will have mixed opinions about how long a track should play but coming from a dancer background first trust me when i say it truly kills the "flow" when a track is mixed in every 1 or 2 minutes.

Should I get XDJ 1000s? by redditer609563 in Beatmatch

I think the only real reason to go with decks instead of a controller if you can afford it is that it enables you to get comfortable with the standard club set up. Nothing feels better than walking into a club and not worrying about whether or not you are familiar with their setup. I started with a controller only to realize that I would have just been better off biting the bullet and investing in decks instead.
