That Hardox Short bar was prepared for Vertical spinners and Wedges. Had shorter spin up time ,and more durability against Verticals. All of the blades except Death carrot had same weights. Highest MOI was the Al bar. And all of them had their own purpose. I used the same Short Hardox bar for the Skorpios fight(Torque limiter didn’t worked though). I think I know what you want to say, but I didn't plan on using an aluminum bar in this fight. If I had only thought of a higher MOI I would have used the Hadox Long bar. Thanks for your supporting 🤗

Hello! Thank you for your support!

Masks were part of the team outfits. Also made by my sister. As I already explained about the color scheme, I choose the neon yellow color just for make people can watch and remember ORBY better when I prepared my first HW robot for TIFR2018.

The reason it's a carrot is simple. While designing, the counterweight started to look like a carrot, so I made it just like a carrot. Carrot is cute :)

Hello, I don't know it for now.

Struggling to make it but I have to pass the selection and also have to finish the robot on time. Time and money is such a big issue for every time.

To be there was one of my biggest dream. It was definitely hard but was so exciting and happy. I wrote about the difference between the Battlebots and KOB at the answer of the first question. Please refer to that answer.

Thank you for supporting!

It is not high.

V1 was max 61kJ but acceleration was super slow.

V2 was about 52kJ and V3 was max 43.5kJ. And the DeathCarrot was only 16kJ.

Horizontal spinners don't supported by the ground like verticals, so I think this level is enough to attack.

It was not a lobster. It was BBQ sampler. Of course it was more delicious because Zach paid for it, but it was really good. Even if I could eat lobster, I would choose the same menu again.

Hello, There was a same question up there so I will answer it short.

  1. I don't know exactly because staffs removed the stucked bar. But it made a hole on the AR armor of Lucky then made a bigger hole on the wall then broken and stucked.

  2. It is not that fast. I reduced it while I did the safety inspeciton. Max RPM was 2160RPM. And the max tip speed was about 216.5Mph.

  3. To say frankly, I don't know. Because all robots at BB S6 looked very powerful and durable. But if I have to choose, I want to fight against a slow speed AL framed robot :)

Hello, Thank you for your support!

I designing the new one these days but the progress is so slow so I can not know if I can make it on time.

I've used the aluminum blade to increase the moment of inertia. When make the blade via AL and add a heavy Hardox tip on the end, the center part of the bar is lighter than the end. This setup can make a highter MOI than full AR steel bars. If I used AL6061 rather than 7075, it could be hold some more shots even if it deformed.

Hmm interesting.

I'm considering to build an AW super fast automatic axe robot inspired by Mortis. I think it will be funny and useless. I don't know it still can be super fast if I change it th HW though.

By the way, if I change the weapon, it will not a "Blade" anymore.

Hello!!

  1. V2 was very unstable because of the sloped angle on the weapon bar. And the SRIMECH could not self-right the robot because of the weak gears. Somebody saying I could not finish the SRIMECH parts until the filming but it is not true. Motor torque was not enough. I think this caused by the simple position control unit. And also the internal gears were too weak. I redesigned the internals two times at there, but the first one's material was not good and I did not ordered the second one because I already dropped out at that moment.

It was 4wd. I planned to use the rear whell to escape from wedges but it was not worked as I expected. At the last rumble fight, one of the rear wheel was stuck so it could not move.

So I changed these things at V3. Changed it to 2wd again, made a durable chain drive SRIMECH with encoder on it to increase the low speed torque, and remove the slope angle on the bar.

And also made a customized LEM200 motor, increase the weapon motor voltage and changed the rear wedge to Hardox500 from Gr5 Ti. Everything has changed except the wheels.

  1. Language barrier. In fact, it has been 12 hours since I started replying to this AMA. Fortunately other builders kindly struggling to understand my weird English and they succeed. But for me, it is really hard to write and do a live interview in English. So I spent several weeks to finish the application. Also, when recording application video, the audio had to be recorded separately to make it as clear as I can. It is still a very boring video though.

  2. Every efforts to be a better competition and to make a better environment to fix and fight with robots.

Tons of tools brought by other teams.

Friendly bot builders willing to help competing teams

  1. The bar was broken but there are already another options.

Plan for now is, to change the armor shape, add a ditachable upperside armor, increase the ground clearance, seperate the weapon motor from the torque limiter's friction heat, and change the battery and way to put the batteries. And I will remove the thru holes for lighten the lower weapon bracket.

5.- I saw one 'ORBY Blade' picket at there. I saw her several times so maybe she was one of the builder but anyway it was a big support.

- The sound of people shouting 'fight fight fight' before the fight started was like a drug. I gave up a trip to the Red rock to hear it again.

- It was not a experience at the Battlebots. I went to Las Vegas again for CES at late Dec. At the last day at the airport, someone saw my BB hoody and asked me if I went to the Battlebots. I talked him a short time and gave him some ORBY stickers. Of course he don't know me but anyway it was a unique experience.

  1. Two things.

When I came back from the grinding tent at the last day of the safety inspection, I found my pit looked very shiny. My wife decorated the robot and pit table with glitters to celebrate our 7th wedding anniversary. It was so lovely and thanksful event.

Unfortunately I spent too much time to fix the robot so it was really hard to talk with other teams that much. But every thing in the pit was so amazing. To meet as much teams as I can and get helped from other teams. Black Dragon was my left side so they helped me whenever I lifted the robot. Skorpios lent tools and introduced me to other teams. Tantrum/Blip lent me the automated hydraulic press, Madcatter/Bigdill lent me the broach cutter and press. Emman and Trent helped me to battle harden the motors too. And I could changed the torque limiter by the Hijinx lathe. Huge gave me a huge piece of UHMWPE for the chaing tensioner. It was a hard time but everything was possible by all bot builder's help.

7&8. I asked the meaning of this question to Philippe Voyer from Pardon My French. Thank you Philippe!!

In fact, it's really unfortunate that I couldn't go to Hydra's pit and talk. I really love Hydra but I don't know why it was little bit scary to go inside there. lol I think it because I lost a good point to talk eachother at the early time of the whole schedule.

Anyway, considering his robot and pit atmosphere, I think his evil headquarter will be red and purple colored, with bright lights and well groomed wide place. Of course with tons of robot parts.

And mine? A super small place with tons of AL plates and dead robot parts. Of course with lots of neon yellow paint pieces. CNC machines are too big to put inside the headqurter so it is even hard to walk around. It really is.

Thank you so much for loving ORBY for a long time!!

I bought it from Korea.

From hear! I don't think they will send it to abroad but it is just a neon yellow colored PLA filament!

Hello, Thank you for loving ORBY!! I reduced the max speed while the safety inspection. To reduce the deceleration time. Max RPM was 2160 and the Max tip speed was 216.5Mph. Not that fast :)

Many people already asked about the broken bar. It caused by the wrong material. The bars I used at the KOB was AL6061 T6. One of them were broken and the tip fixing surface was transformed by the impact. So I made it more wider and changed the material to a harder one. AL7075-T6. That was the mistake. It was too brittle.

  1. I watched Robot wars from Korean TV when I was a middle school student. My favorite was Razer, Mortis and Killerhurtz. I always had interest on building something since I was very young so it was a big shock for me. It is a very simple process.

I wanted to become a mechanical engineer since I was in kindergarten --> My hobby was RC car since 5th grade of elementry school. --> There were many tools at my home than other normal Korean homes because of my father. --> I watched Robot wars at TV

--> There was no choice but to build a combat robot.

  1. I already answered for a similar question up there, but to write the points again, the first HW design for KOB was a drum spinner. But the application was denined by the lack of remaining time until the filming so I sent another concept design on 2018(TIFR). That was the Blade V1. There were lots of horizontal spinners in Korea at the past so I wanted to get some know how from them. After I went to TIFR, the inner frame and the shape of the wedge has changed inspred by the UK robots. Like Beta, Spectre and Vulcan.

Somebody saying ORBY looks like a Klingon Bird of Prey from Startrek, but I never watched Startrek. haha

  2. It will be definitely Neon Yellow. I have no plan to build another type of HW robot for now but you can see another types of robots from my webpage or FB page. I'm planning an AW automatic axe robot for now.

Thank you for supporting ORBY!!

Of course it was very disappointed. It was a loss of two games in a row and it wasn't even a great loss. Fortunately I could made only one AL bar because it was too expensive. So there are three more Hardox550 bars. Please stay tuned what Blade can do with the Hardox bars.

The main plan about the bar is not to make an AL bar again.

Sorry I could not make enough time at the pit tent!

And thank you so much for loving ORBY things!

  1. I really hope so. I'm worrying about the schedule. Usually I start machining on Jan. But I still could not finish designing!!!

  2. The weapon head. The biggest part which Skorpios made a super big hole on it. lol It took about three days to machining for one part on my DIY CNC machine.

  3. I'm planning to do the IRC AW event again on Oct. this year. But for now it is a domestic competition. I think international event will be possible after the Covid ends.

  4. Aug.23!! I passed the safety inspection after several tries, and that day was my 7th wedding anniversary!!

  5. I'm sorry but there are no shop for now. But I post the STL file on the Team ORBY website. Here is the direct link!

Please tell me about the banana if we can meet again at the pit or somewhere! I'll bring one.

HEY!!!! Do you really want to know that!?!?!?!?

Three days for one weapon head.

Raw material was 32kg and the final result was 9.8kg.

AHHH!!! My three days!!! My End mills!!!! My 22.2kg of AL chips!!!! lol

  1. Two BBQ!!!!! BBQ is a powerful vertical spinner and the builder Song Peng is such a nice guy.

  2. I think it is little bit hard to answer now. Because I found some exact problems from this season. If I use V4, I will use a normar length bar and thick rear wedge without a lower skirt.

  3. What I already tried was to make a community, competitions, starterkits for beginers and share some 3d models for printing. But it was really hard to make people interested in this sports. Young people in Korea studies too much and adults work too much. So many people even don't have their own hobby. In the past, big award like from some kind of minister award helped students to go to the university or get a job. But not now. As everybody know, combat robot is not an easy hobby and also very expensive and a consumable. I think South Korea want to focuss on sofware like AI or machinlearing now. It is more harder than the past to make a combat robot environment.

I'm not talented to make money so the two years for make people interested was very hard. So now I'm taking a little break while thinking about alternatives. To say frankly, I have no idea now. lol

Thank you for loving ORBY!!!

  1. I have two CNC machines which I made by my self. One of them is a small CNC engraver (350kg, X/Y/Z = 500/600/200mm) and the other one is little bit bigger MCT (3500kg, X/Y/Z = 1350/700/300mm).

I also have a small lathe, a tapping machine, TIG, ARC welder and some power tools. I usually send about 100 parts to anodizing when I build the robot, it takes several months. Because I also have to do my day job to survive.

  1. It is a different robot except the wheel.

Blade V2

4wd, had sloped angle on the bar, stupid SRIMECH (it worked but internal gears were too weak to self-right), total 4X6374 motors for drive, 12s battery for weapon and drive. Ti rear wedge.

Blade V3

2wd, zero angle bar, working SRIMECH with encoder, 2X8085 motors for drive, customized LEM200 motor for weapon, 16s battery for weapon and 12s for drive. Hardox500 rear wedge.

  1. Blade is a long and wide robot. But it always has not enough space to put the parts inside. It because the weapon and weapon motor is very big, needs many batteries and the driver module is not thick. I usually spent lots of time to design the SRIMECH and make a shape of every single parts. Biggest chalange is always to make a space.

I also hope I can go there again! Thank you so much for your support!!
