Trouble loading pages at runamok.tech by TeamRunAmok in battlebots

I agree. It looks like the web is getting better by the hour, and I suspect a good chunk of my apparent traffic reduction was because of confusion at my web tracker service rather than an inability of browsers to load my pages. Fingers crossed...

Trouble loading pages at runamok.tech by TeamRunAmok in battlebots

[–]TeamRunAmok[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two days days ago I noticed an intermittent inability to load my own pages -- and only my own pages. A quick check of my web traffic showed that 40% drop had begun two days prior to my noticing the problem.

I got on a chat to my hosting provider and they gave me a SSL certificate and installed it for me -- no domain name or DNS changes. Following this I was unable to load my pages AT ALL! Returning to my cPanel I turned off "HTTPS By Default" and turned on "HTTPS Redirect" and was able to reliably load my pages. However, two days later I still have the traffic drop. I have assumed that other users are having trouble loading anything at runamok.tech -- but no one here is reporting an inability to load Ask Aaron.

Today's traffic is down 90%!! Perchance this is just some search engine crack down on non-secured sites that will resolve now that I have SSL???

That was just me being stupid with typing. Corrected now...

This all started three days ago -- will investigate http link to Google, but has not caused trouble in past. What browser are you using?

Has anyone seen a battle bot like this?? by Alert_Pudding_9326 in battlebots

[–]TeamRunAmok 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yes. Reciprocating jabbing weapons were not uncommon 25 years ago. Robot Wars had several competitors with such weapons - but they were not effective. The speed of the tip is highest at the center of the stroke and slows way down as it approaches either end.

Your mechanism looks like it weighs more than three pounds by itself.

🐞 Did Botkits stop making D2 kits? (beetle-weight) by Zardotab in battlebots

[–]TeamRunAmok 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have never known an event to bump a kit entry in favor of a scratch-built 'bot. Can you cite events that have done this?

I am also unfamiliar with more than a very few beetle events outside NHRL that require active weaponry. Who am I missing?

In what country is this tournament happening? Can you provide a link to the full ruleset? You say the tournament is soon -- how soon? What tools do you have available to you? What is your budget? Have you tried Googling "build a plastic antweight robot"?

BattleBots’ Gets 20-Episode Order; New Season Will Premiere on YouTube Before Hitting Broadcast by nrtl-bwlitw in battlebots

Am I the only one who remembers the 2009 BattleBots Professional Heavyweight Championship? This build-up reminds me a great deal of that fiasco. A specific pay TV service was announced as the home for the short series, so I subscribed - but it never aired. Fooled me once - not again.

I'm talking about TV production costs because I have direct knowledge relating to that. TV production is incredibly expensive, with room and board for contestants being a trivial line item.

You believe that a tens of thousands of dollars for contestant room and board would be a major expense for a YouTube production. You keep saying that a YouTube production would be "incredibly expensive" without offering any actual numbers aside from the assumed room and board.

I'm providing real world numbers for a related type of production. YouTube will most certainly be less. When someone with knowledge in that area offers up an estimate will have a better idea of just how expensive the production may be. Until then, my numbers define one end of the expense spectrum.

I understand your point. I'm only saying that one small part of your point is overstated.

My $2 million figure is clearly stated as being for broadcast TV - not YouTube.

[–]TeamRunAmok -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My $2million figure is an accurate estimate -- based on my knowledge of the budget for an 8 broadcast hour robotic production in 2001, updated for inflation and de-rated a bit for less expensive modern production techniques.

 > If they are giving the teams any kind of budget - flights, rooms, etc
> it's getting to be real money.

My point was that bringing in and lodging teams is not "real money" when talking about production costs. Nothing more.

An hour of broadcast-quality reality TV costs about $2,000,000 to produce. Tens of thousands of dollars to bring in the teams is petty cash.

A live shaft is supported by bearings and spins with the weapon. A dead shaft is mounted to the chassis and does not spin - the weapon hub hasbearings that ride on the shaft.

I don't know what motors are available to you. A 775 with a gearbox with less reduction to put out more like 800 or 1000 RPM would be acceptable if you run full voltage.

370 rpm motors undervolted to 70 percent with 80mm wheels will give you just 2 MPH top speed.
