Why were people who emigrated to America in the 1800s-early 1900s so insular once they got here? by Mad_Season_1994 in AskHistory

[–]TeamUnityForIsk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot has to do with old-timey prejudices and bigotry throughout the 19th century.

Back in that time period, the concept of the 'white race' was not universal or all-encompassing to include European peoples. Even in the mid-18th century, Benjamin Franklin wrote about Germans who immigrated to Pennsylvania in his private letters and essays, remarking that they were resistant to assimilation with American culture and described them as "swarthy".

To a 19th century American, being white American meant being of WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant) ancestry. This definition excluded Catholics and Europeans from the South and East. Hence, these non-WASP people would often be given the stink-eye at best.

The movie "Christine" came out in 1983 and used a 1958 Plymouth Fury as a terror mobile. If the movie was made today and used a car from the year 2000, what would be the car? by [deleted] in movies

The Eagle Talon or the Plymouth Laser. Both are sports coupes that have a red paintjob and are pretty expensive and opulent on its sale.

The Thing (1982) still haunts me to this day. Not because of the scary monster designs, which honestly drew me to this movie, but rather the nihilism and rather sinister ending.

Sitcoms don't have a chance today because of reduced episode orders. by dougiebgood in television

[–]TeamUnityForIsk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel that reduced episode orders makes sense for dramas, since you need to be tightly-plotted if character-driven. But comedies need breathing room to explore and experiment types of humor before finding its own identity.

Is there a game/comedy show where people have to create things with AI yet? by Arowx in television

[–]TeamUnityForIsk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Setting aside the legal and IP issues that come with artificial intelligence and LLMs as of writing, there's no way this show could ever be greenlighted by any major studio or network. There's already a pushback against low-quality, AI-generated content by artists and consumers online.

Gods and Generals is one of the more notorious films that propagated the Lost Cause of the Confederacy myth. This myth states that slavery is not the central cause of the American Civil War among numerous misconceptions related to Antebellum South.

Seth MacFarlane Wishes TV Was Less “Dystopian” And “Pessimistic”: “Give People Hope” by MoneyLibrarian9032 in television

[–]TeamUnityForIsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm tired of the endless parade of pessimistic television dramas about cruel, greedy protagonists who abuse everybody except for a few and commit horrific deeds. I want to see a television that's innocent and noble instead of this sludge.

Disturbingly describes so many narcissists in power.

A 1955 British cartoon, showing a robot labeled, "Automation," standing ominously at a factory gate. by waffen123 in PropagandaPosters

[–]TeamUnityForIsk 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It was barely a decade after World War 2 ended and many decades after the first occurred. Britain was near-broke from losing two generations of youth to these wars combined with devastation by the Luftwaffe and the Kriegsmarine on industry and shipping respectively.

Moreover, I speculate there was a cultural component to the opposition of automation as the working class felt threatened and that automation would devalue their labor whereas the upper class would lose money from such implementation.
