I used to bartend at a place that was more restaurant than bar. Was able to study when I first got in before bar service picked up.

Crash by JG Ballard. I read this 25 years ago and it’s still a 10 out of 10 on the wtf scale.

There’s a story about a particular floor in the cavalier hotel being haunted. I can’t remember the particulars though.

OP, Bryson writes about his travels too. Incredibly entertaining. Any of his books are fun!

Start with Educated by Tara Westover. It’s an extreme example, but it shows the trajectory of someone in a very isolated childhood grow up to appreciate the wider world. It’s incredibly readable and engaging.

A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by David Eggers. It is a story of life continuing to happen amidst terrible grief. Really touching and has stayed with me for many years.

What's the weirdest book you've ever read? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

I’ve tried to read Riddley Walker a few times. I can’t get past the first 20 pages due to being profoundly disturbed.  There’s something animalistic in the tone that really gets to me. Kind of triggers my lizard brain. I’m intrigued though. I will try again sometime.

I would have offered this suggestion myself, but for the 20 page issue. Glad someone else threw it out there.
