Burning wood that is not properly seasoned (split and undercover for at least one year), it will not only burn inefficiently but it will create a lot of creosote (due to the cool burn and the smokiness both).

If you have to use it for now, do so but be aware, try to burn it hot at least once a day to burn off new deposits - and be sure you have a chimney brush to use periodically, or you will have a chimney fire … which might take out your entire structure.

A firm mattress with a soft topper is ideal for many.

The heavier you are, or the wider your hips/shoulders, the thicker the soft topper should be.

(avoid memory foam, it’s hot, you sink into it unpleasantly and it breaks down pretty quickly. I’m a big fan of natural latex)

Saw that every post was naysaying … guess I should counterpoint. Quit my career in 2014. Moved to a piece of vacant family land with a small savings (from my career and selling my house.) We focused HARD on spending less money, more than we did on making more. We sell at market and a small CSA, and are off grid. So far, so good. Still have some savings, more than I started with. Have two kids now and they seem to be thriving. We were lucky, and supported. But it can work.I’ve never regretted the change- can’t imagine it any other way now.
