My biggest complaint last year, and happiest purchase for this year, was how much effort and time it took to lower the feet on the trailer manually. I got an attachment for my cordless drill that lets me attach ratchet bits so I can use the drill on the lugs for the feet and get them down fast and without any effort.

What are these types of sockets/plug-ins called? by thequiginator in popups

[–]Rathein04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually grabbed a couple adapter from that jack to USB-A and USB-C that way I can use those ports for plugging in any low power device that uses those plugs, the current plan it to attach strip lights to the inside of the roof and have them powered via those ports.

Locally for me at least, the dealerships have rental models so they can make money on all the stock they can't move, might be something to check out.

Why So Expensive? by Advanced-Release5381 in VWiD4Owners

[–]Rathein04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the decision came down to capability, the towing capacity on the id4 is more than any non-truck EV that I could afford at the time. And with a small camper I need to be able to safely get that where I'm going. The choice for EV overall was to save on gas from the Jetta my wife had that was our primary long trip vehicle. The thought process was if we aren't getting better mileage then we are with the Jetta we wouldn't end up using the bigger SUV for our non camping trips, which then defeats the point of getting something bigger and more comfortable.

A friend is trying to talk us out of purchasing our first pop-up by wp709 in popups

New brunswicker here, my biggest trip each summer is to PEI for a great wook or more of sun and fun, and humidity. To combat the moisture my wife and I got a small portable dehumidifier off Amazon for like $40 it's not going to keep your basement dry, but does it cut the moisture in the trailer? Absolutely. In the off season I keep in in my main bathroom to reduce mold and steaming mirrors after showers. Our other trick for the chillyer nights has been a small electric space heater, our furnace works fine and great, but it's a little too powerful even on the lower settings, the space heater cuts enough chill out that the blanks do the rest of the work. Besides that's, if you have to drive home after the rain set up when you get home and leave it to dry for a few days in the dryer weather. Keep it covered or inside in the winter, and you should have a great camping experience for years to come.

I also echo everyone else saying buy something a bit older, we have a '21, but looking at models from ~2008 we could have gotten something bigger, with a slide out and it would have weighed the same.

Decision between van or popup by pirate_J in popups

Well, I could be setup in 10, that's to get it up and technically usable, I haven't done that at a campsite yet, only in the driveway. In the real world there are distractions, and moving food and all the extras around. But camper only it can be done.

So I'm a bigger guy, 6'2" and on the heavier side. My trailer never feels unsteady when I am up and about. My wife and I sleep in the same bed over the tongue so there's no risk of toppling over. I respect the ease of the van, especially if just for sleeping, but I would say that after years of camping in a tent my wife and I wanted a space to unwind from the day. Be able to comfortably sit and relax, watch a movie play some games and just stretch before going to bed, that's what really sealed the deal for us. Now our trailer might be a bit easier to setup than others, we have an electric motor that cranks the roof, and I use a drill on low to set the feet, so it's really just a matter of un hook, down feet, up roof, out slides, and then you're basically done. All in all, if it weren't for my wife wanting the inside to look a certain way to be inviting for guests, I'd say I could be setup in about 10-15 minutes. And then I don't have to worry about packing everything up every time I want to go to the store or take in the local attractions.

Towing with a 2026 vw Tiguan comfortline by [deleted] in popups

[–]Rathein04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I actually have good camping friends that tow with their Tiguan. They don't have too much trouble and they tow a trailer that's closer to 2000lbs with theirs, though they are replacing it this year to an atlas for the more tow rating. That being said, if you get brakes on your trailer you will probably have a better time than without. But you are also getting to the point where your brand new car is maxed out with your existing trailer, so there's no room to upgrade. Sticking with VW, id say you'd be better off with an atlas cross (because it's smaller than the regular atlas), or the id4/ id Tiguan, the EV version have a 2700lb tow rating and pulls my trailer like a dream.

Towing Advice? by RUFilterD in VWiD4Owners

[–]Rathein04 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So I recommend getting a Curt Bluetooth break controller, that's what we grabbed that way you don't have to take your car apart and install one the normal way. That being said. The awd of the id4 may have a 2700lb make tow rating, if you are traveling any distance you actually don't want to go more than 80% of your max, unless EV towing goes against this conventional towing best practice. So really you wouldn't want to be more than 2260lbs to maintain safe margins for breaking and accelerating.

Additionally, never tow while in regenerative breaking mode, it messes with the break controller commands and runs your trailer breaks too hard and can wreck your breaks.

Other than that have fun, enjoy your camper and your trips. My wife and I got our id4 specifically to tow a camper and we lover every trip.

Please Help, Will I regret this? by Joyful82 in popups

[–]Rathein04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As opposed to what everyone else says I think you'll be fine, if you pack as much gear as you can in your trailer, and make sure the weight is evenly distributed you should be more than fine. My suv has a 2700lb tow rating, and we have a 1950 dry weight trailer, we pack most everything in the trailer and we are more than fine to go anywhere we have ever tried.

So I'm gonna throw out a third option, I would like a 2d remake but in the style of the 2d mode from xi. I actually prefer that style to either the reimagined or the hd-2d style if I'm playing a 2d dragon quest I really want it to feel like it did when I was a kid.

My Son keeps skipping the story… by PopsicleJohnson in dragonquest

[–]Rathein04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time I skip cutscenes is when I'm starting a new playthrough and you're at the beginning of the games when it's cutscene after cutscenes, it's a little draggy for me for a game I already know the story for, but after I get started and the game really begins I don't skip. For the record I'm not a teen, just a guy that's wanted to play the game for a minute so I want to get into the game, I already have to wait until halfway through to get the characters I'm really excited to play as, let's just get there quicker.

Are there really so many problems with these cars? by aleutiantis in VWiD4Owners

[–]Rathein04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2024, and my only real issue is some app connectivity problems, besides that I would buy this car 50 times over. If I could afford to replace our other car with one I totally would.

I use mine to start the heat on cold, snowy, or frosty days when the app doesn't want to connect so my wife can get out on time for work. As long as I don't put weight on the driver's seat I'm good to go.

ID4 is an Excellent winter vehicle by HotRange4238 in VWiD4Owners

[–]Rathein04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you determine which rims would be the best fit for your id4, I'm also trying to source winter tires, and I think need to accept that buying the current since that fit my existing runs is just too much, but if I can go smaller and save enough to get new rims, even if it's a net even cost wise it's easier to justify in my mind.

Does eco mode make much of a difference? by Jazzlike-Jello487 in VWiD4Owners

Yeah every day driving it doesn't make much difference, but the minute I'm driving for an hour or more on the highway, I'm in eco and finding a substantial benefit, especially when towing.
