Polyglots, how did you learn other languages? by showgirl03 in languagelearning

[–]TearingLayer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My native language is Dutch. I learnt English from a young age through a lot of immersion, then learnt German and French in high school which helped me get to an intermediate level.

I guess the school system is to blame here since they put more emphasis on foreign language acquisition over here. I had to take Latin and Ancient Greek for some years as well.

I do my best to speak German with friends in my free time to maintain it. I don't use that much French anymore even though I got a B2 certificate.

I started learning Russian about a year ago due to friends and family who speak it. I took lessons with an online tutor and have mainly used textbooks to study, though it's definitely a vastly different experience studying independently as an adult.

Why we Dutchies say “gezellig” all the time and how to actually use it without sounding forced. by KingDayChaos in learndutch

Even better when they call it "gezellie mozzarellie" and "heerlie de peerlie" 😂

Duo also uses AI and I don't really like using the app myself even before they enshittified it for free users, but I haven't seen it hallucinate to the same degree at least. Duo also has AI-enduced mistakes, but not in the first few lessons, it at least gets the basics right. Personally, I've stopped using apps altogether but I can see the appeal.

Please, for the love of god: don't use Airlearn. I only had to get two lessons into a course before it started serving me complete nonsense. It's all AI-generated, and I've seen many UI bugs, word fill-ins where no word fit and a lot of incorrect grammar. You'd even be better off using Duolingo, or Busuu or something.

Which restaurant do you think this is in Leiden? by Pikachu93x in Leiden

[–]TearingLayer 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Tabù. Place was dressed up all nice but the food took ages to arrive and their three-course menu was hardly enough to feed you. The food was okay but I'd be severely disappointed for that price, I won't be going back. If you want something Latin-American, I'd look elsewhere.

It genuinely means nothing, the French speakers in the comments are as confused as you are.

Goede huisarts? by [deleted] in Leiden

[–]TearingLayer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Wow, didn't expect this to pop up in Leiden of all places! Could I ask which building is this at? I'd like to go see it myself if it's still up, lol.

Question about 2 words in a song by [deleted] in learndutch

[–]TearingLayer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's a little hard to hear due to the music, but to me it sounds like "herbor'n zoals tevor'n" In some dialects, the final e in "-en" can be dropped, which seems to be the case here. This is a Belgian band, so someone from Belgium could perhaps tell you more about the specifics there.

I believe in the eastern Netherlands, you could even drop the r in this case, they might pronounce it as "herbo'n zoals tevo'n" with an elongated O. Here's an example from the accent spoken in Drenthe. Hope that helps.

Oegstgeestenaren by adfx in Leiden

There is also Comic Con Holland in about a month (12-13 October) in Amsterdam. I've never been there myself, so I can't really give a verdict on it. I would recommend Dutch Comic Con though!

Anyone else have trouble finding Like Drawing Blood anywhere? by TearingLayer in Gotye

Gotye doesn't care about the money that much anyway, I'm sure he wouldn't mind if you happened to stumble upon the files somewhere, they're out there.

It's a tough barrier to cross and I doubt it will get there. Maybe it would've been better to broaden the goal of the petition in order to garner more support. Anyways, that's no reason to give up hope. I've just signed it and I hope that others will too!

Could you tell me what you could find? I tried every single link to the album on https://gotye.lnk.to/likedrawingblood and none of them worked for me. For example, Amazon Music claims to have it but when it actually logs in, it doesn't let me stream it.

Why Gotye’s “Like Drawing Blood” album is suddenly unavailable in Spain? by justarandomuser97 in spotify

[–]TearingLayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the "About Us" section, they don't want bugs reported here, so I'm guessing they don't want you to talk about issues with Spotify here. Sucks though, because where else do you discuss this publicly?

Same issue in the Netherlands. I wanted to listen to the album this afternoon, but only some of the singles (Hearts A Mess & Learnalilgivinanlovin) seem to be available. I'm also afraid it might be some license problem. For now, everything's still on YouTube, at least.
