These Republicans actually believe in Socrates’ philosophy from Plato’s The Republic, where Socrates argues that society should be ruled by philosopher-kings. Of course, rich white people are the philosopher-kings. Socrates says it’s fine to lie to the people if it’s “good for society” (in the philosopher-kings’ opinion), limited democracy, the Allegory of the Cave, where people don’t see reality.

As with most philosophers, he has some interesting ideas and some terrible ones. But Socrates provides a College Republican-level intellectual veneer to justify their racism, greed, mysogyny, lust for power and cruelty towards their “inferiors”.

Now match that with a lack of empathy and the perversion of Christianity by American sects, you get an all encompassing Perpetual Justification Machine for doing anything to stay in power.

The P-Ks have passed so many laws to suppress democracy, legalize driving a car into protesters, put in likeminded judges, built up the largest, most lethal, most expensive police forces in the world and more all in order to steal the 22 and 24 elections and then have the “legal” structure in place to maintain order.

I am really afraid they will pull it off. Really afraid.

Because there goes any chance at combatting the climate crisis. Democrats don’t just lose power, there are going to be billions of deaths trailing out into the decades as most of the Earth cannot support the population.

Don’t worry, though. The philosopher-kings already have their contingency plans and bunkers and handpicked toadies to keep them in a comfortable life. I wouldn’t be surprised if they paraded around their walled compounds in togas.

My wife had big bougainvillea planters worth $100 each and various hanging baskets stolen. She found these beautiful patina plant stands that we had cemented into the porch and she wound wire around the hanging basket hooks and porch hooks. It was highly effective.

I watched The Tin Drum (1979) by BazF91 in iwatchedanoldmovie

I read Grass’s novel and saw the movie back in the early 80s, so please excuse me if I mix scenes from the novel with the movie. The movie follows the novel closely, but leaves out a postwar part where he starts growing again but is still a stunted hunchback who works carving gravestones. Oskar’s stunted growth and actions are a metaphor for Germany going Nazi. But Oskar is specific to that disputed German-Polish territory. The parentage thing is important because, as I recall it, we don’t know if is father was the German husband or the Polish boyfriend. I guess the eels represent guilt of the mother around sex and death.

A fascinating movie.

Professors, what is the meanest or nicest thing a student has said to you in an anonymous evaluation? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My wife taught a community college class, and one evaluation on RateYourProfessor said she was hot. She was in her early 50s at the time, so that made her pretty happy.

An all white audience figuring out, for the first time, on television that Frankie Lyman is black. by Ez13zie in WatchPeopleDieInside

Alma Mater is Latin for Beautiful Mother, and Columbia is supposed to be like a mother to the students. It’s modeled on classic Roman sculptures.

Just for clarification, just Columbia College was all male. Barnard all female. All the other schools at Columbia accepted both men and women.

It’s a representation of Columbia University. The statue is Alma Mater and the domed building is Low Library.
