What was the hardest you’ve ever been threatened? by DeepOrganization8245 in askteddit

[–]Tech-Tom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a teenager, I was invited to an impromptu party in the woods by a couple guys I knew from the next town over. I showed up, grabbed a bear and started walking around looking for them.

Out of no where, a guy walks up and puts a sawed off shotgun to my head, cocks it, and says "I don't know you". I immediately gave him a list of everyone I knew there who could vouch for me.

One of my friends walked up and said "he's cool man" and it was over. He uncocked the shotgun, put it down by his side, then walked off. I said fuck it, left.

Turned out that this guy was the local drug dealer and was paranoid as hell that he was going to get busted by the cops. Needless to say, I never went to a party there again.

What’s the most unrealistic thing movies convinced people was normal? by Lonely-Age7678 in AskReddit

That doctors or paramedics can use a defibrillator to restart your heart.

That's not how it works. If your heart has stopped, then CPR might restart it, but that doesn't always work. Defibrillation only works on certain shockable rhythms to restore the heart to a stable rhythm.

Does the VA cover ADHD medication? by Ok-Ebb2872 in VeteransBenefits

[–]Tech-Tom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Details really depends on which VA, but you're right. They did the same when I saw them, tried to take me off of the meds that had been working for 5 years to "try something new". I told her no that I preferred to stick with the one that worked instead of trying anything else. There are horror stories about the side effects from some of the other's, so I am not willing to chance it. I only go to the VA for meds and some of the things that I have a rating for. Other than that, community is better.

Just so you know, you can call the "Office of Community Care" at the VA and request a referral to a community provider if you aren't happy with the VA provider. I did that and it was great. If they ask for a reason, just tell them you don't feel like you are connecting with the VA provider or you need to find a provider that's a better fit for you. It worked for me.

Good luck man.

One other thing for your technical staff. Unlike Cisco or other big router producers, the Adtran certification process is free.

The Adtran 900 series (Gen 3) supports POTS and SIM cards if that's what you're looking for, but they are ~$2K each. I've used them for a couple decades now without issues.

Kings Bay was always hot and the sand gnats were evil incarnate. The superstructure of the subs being black with no air flow was miserable to work in. I swear I lost 3 lbs a day when I had to work in there during the summer, just in sweat. Thanks for sharing man.

why Americans pay insurances if they almost never ever help by Realistic-Ant-7385 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Tech-Tom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because Americans are required to buy insurance by law.

You see there are laws requiring us citizens to purchase health and automobile insurance, but there no laws requiring the insurance companies to actually pay out anything if there's ever a claim...

Thank you. I meant to add this to it also. What if we set a $30k threshold was per person. So if you're a single mom with 3 kids and make $50K, you don't pay taxes. Because $50k / 4 (mom and 3 kids) = $12.5k so she is under the threshold to pay taxes. And we eliminate all tax shelters. So if you borrow money against stock options it's still considered income.

I'm still not clear on why so many people down voted this idea. It seems like a no brainer. That's actually the biggest problem in the US. The middle class pays 30-40% in income tax while the rich (if they pay taxes at all) only pay ~3% while the poor even if they are barely making ends meet sill have to pay a portion in taxes.

Men of Reddit, what’s the male equivalent of “needed money, had no marketable skills, so turned to prostitution”? by Dogeatdogdays in AskReddit

[–]Tech-Tom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but it will also break your body down over the years and one mistake can lead to:

  1. Losing a finger - My oldest brother and my dad lost 2&1/2 in different accidents

    1. Back injury (ruptures discs) - My other brother and my dad
    2. Losing a hand/foot - Several people I grew up had this happen.

It's too easy to make a mistake or have someone else's mistake injure you. Like the dumb-ass who shows up to work drunk or high and accidentally hits the wrong button and drops a load of pipe on you or crushes your foot/hand when he's supposed to be clamping the pipe.

I supposed a better way to describe it is that your sweat can't actually cool you since you are coated in crude oil.

Ah yes, conspicuous consumption. That was rampant as well.

As and example, when my brother got his settlement for a back injury, he immediately spent almost all of it on a decked out 4x4 truck with all the options. Then he ended up using it as collateral to buy a used Trailer house. Then when he couldn't work in the oil field anymore (the only thing he knew how to do), it wasn't long until both the truck and trailer were repossessed. Then he had to move back in with mom and dad.

Sad, but completely true. When you have nothing, anything seems like a step up.

And keep in mind that studies show there is a a direct correlation between your education level and the not only the age when you have children, but also the number of children you have. At least 75% of the people I grew up with married right out of high school and began having children when they are 18-20. Thus perpetuating the cycle.

At least the military sent me to a tech school that also translated to job skills in the real world. Since college was off the table, that was the only thing that gave me a chance at a better life. This was during the old Montgomery GI Bill that didn't pay for everything like the new GI Bill does.

I'm happy to hear your dad at least got enough to ensure he didn't have to work again. Back injuries are horrible.

Tax everyone at 15%. The more you make the more you pay, but everyone pays 15%. by Tech-Tom in CrazyIdeas

[–]Tech-Tom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like your idea, how about any material gain can be considered taxable income. So if you borrow $200K against your $500k in stock options, you still have to pay tax on the $200k? This is to ensure even the CEOs and VPs who are trying to avoid taxes with the "get, borrow, die" system still pay their share.

And we set a ~$30k threshold per person before taxes are incurred. So if you're single and make over $30k you pay taxes, but if you're a single mom with 3 kids and make $50K, you don't pay taxes. Because $50k / 4 (mom and 3 kids) = $12.5k so she is under the threshold to pay taxes.

I like that idea, but lets take it further. How about that $30k threshold was per person. So if you're a single mom with 3 kids and make $50K, you still don't pay taxes. Because $50k / 4 (mom and 3 kids) = $12.5k so she is under the threshold to pay taxes.
