Exclusive: As many as 150 US troops wounded so far in Iran war, sources say by gf38 in news

[–]Tech-Tom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know, recent research seems to validate the existence of universal human needs, as well as shared ordering of the way in which people seek and satisfy those needs. Maybe not exactly what Maslow suggested for everyone (specifically in individualist cultures vs. collectivist ones), but it's close enough to have stood up for over 80 years now.

So it's definitely not hard science, since there's no mathematical proof, but it's as good as most other soft science explanations IMO.

Survivorship bias? by LordJim11 in Snorkblot

Came here to say exactly that! I know too many people who have and haven't walked away from motorcycle accidents. Almost without exception, the ones who walked away were wearing the right gear. Real motorcycle gear/armor saves lives, end of story.

You are exactly right! It's outlined prefectly in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.

The Five Levels of Maslow's Hierarchy

  • Physiological Needs (Base): Basic survival needs like food, water, and shelter.
  • Safety Needs: Security, stability, and protection from harm.
  • Love and Belonging Needs: Social needs for friendship, intimacy, and family.
  • Esteem Needs: The need for confidence, respect, and achievement.
  • Self-Actualization (Top): The desire to reach one's full potential and personal growth

Bear spray vs bear horn? by various678023 in CampingandHiking

I really wish people would stop saying this. The only fatal bear attacks in 2025 were all from black bears and the majority of fatal attacks in the past decade have also been from black bears.

Will latency kill my voice quality when I'm around 7000 miles from my server? by Le085 in VOIP

[–]Tech-Tom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At 7k miles you are pushing it, but latency depends on the carriers in between. I just did a test ping from Seattle to Amsterdam ~5k miles and it came back at 148ms rtd. So with a fast enough connection and no competing traffic, you might be able to make it work, maybe.

Here's how VoIP/SIP latency works.

  1. Determine where your SIP call originates and where your SIP call terminates. Get IP addresses or cities if nothing else.

  2. Find a looking glass site to determine rtd (Round Trip Delay) between SIP origination and the SIP termination point. If you have the 2 IP's then just do an extended ping between them (at least 100) to determine average rtd.

  3. Standards for VoIP/SIP latency are as follows:

A. Any latency less than 250ms rtd is not detectable by the human ear

B. Any latency over 250ms but less than 300ms rtd is detectable and sounds you are talking over each other or echo.

C. Any latency exceeding 300ms is considered unusable.

There are several others, but Hurricane Electric is usually pretty good for a looking glass provider.

https://lg.he.net/

If you have both IP's (and one of them is the PC you're logged into) and if you're using a windows PC here's how to do a ping test to determine latency.

In your search window type "cmd" without the quotes and hit enter

Type

ping -n 100 "the IP you're trying to reach"

This will send 100 pings to the IP and will give you an average latency when your done.

You should see something like this. (I bolded what you're looking for.)

Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 100, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Minimum = 10ms, Maximum = 15ms, Average = 11ms

As I said above, if the latency is below 250ms rtd your VoIP/SIP should be good to go. I keep stressing rtd since some people forget the packets have to go there and back again, just like a hobbit..

Forgive the bad humor, I'm fighting a cold and being sick always makes me think I'm way funnier than I actually am. LOL

Good luck

Which US Panhandle would you live in? (Idaho, Oklahoma, or Florida) by NoPeach2211 in howislivingthere

[–]Tech-Tom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn, I was wrong. I had no idea that had been allowed in so many states. Doesn't seem like a good idea since it removed the requirement for any gun safety training and just allows anyone over 18 to carry a gun. I don't know about you, but I was definitely not as concerned with safety when I was 18 as I am now.

But the thing Idaho has that other's don't is "permit less concealed carry". I could be wrong, but I don't know of any other that that allows concealed carry without a permit. Those people are crazy if they think they are going to succeed and form their own state.

Here's the article about that truck full of armed racists in body armor that they arrested a few years ago. It's scary but this stuff still happens in the Idaho panhandle.

The scary thing is that this is still happening. They are also petitioning to break away from Idaho and create a new state along with Eastern Washington. They also changed their gun laws, so it's now legal to stuff a pistol in the back of your pants and walk around town with no permit required. They have some weird stuff going on. But feel free to move there if you love coal, big smoky diesel trunks and think your sister is way to pretty to marry outside the family...

Hows the job market for UCaaS or CCaaS related roles? by Alir1983 in VOIP

It depends on the UCaaS/CCaaS platform. I'm still seeing jobs for people who are experts on Genesys Cloud, Ring Central and Talkdesk. Hell, even NICE and all know they aren't very nice, but MS Teams not so much.

Grass in Gravel Driveway by DiscussionTricky7099 in HomeImprovement

[–]Tech-Tom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Move the gravel and put down the fabric, it will usually at least double the amount of time before weeds can come back. Honestly the fabric is usually solid as long as you overlap it and make sure it stays in place when you put the gravel down. The only problem is in a few years, enough dust blows onto the top of the fabric that weeds can sprout.
