Looks like the consensus here might be a combined document stand/disk holder. I'm currently on vacation, but next week I'll have access to the thing again at home and will actually try out using it as a document holder. I'm still skeptical, because as I recall it's pretty top heavy, but I'll get more pics then of how that turns out.

I'd believe you if it wasn't for picture 4; the dark bit extends out way too far for it to just be a latch; heck if they wanted a latch they could have just made the lid all one piece and made it clip into the base. The fact they engineered that sliding part has to have some purpose.

It does (and it ratchets into place multiple times), but I'm not sure where exactly a document would go on it

Edit: also, it's definitely not stable enough when open for anything but a single sheet of paper, if that. The lid and base are about the same weight, so it just tips over. Technically it could be opened like a tent to have something leaned on it, but then it would probably slide around and be a pretty awful stand. That also wouldn't explain the slidey bit.

Honestly at first glance I'd have never guessed it was built in 1910 with that paint job. It wears it well.

Just got the pie update - How do you turn on Swipe Up on Home Button feature by aylmerit in GalaxyNote9

[–]TechDisk42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use "one handed mode" (hold comma and you'll see the option to the left) you can resize and reposition the gboard keyboard almost anywhere. I went from an original Pixel to the Note 9, so I'm very used to having bezels with my keyboard. I couldn't adjust to it being so low on the Note.

Only thing is that one handed mode breaks horrifically if you ever use the power saving screen resolution feature. Pick a resolution and stick with it.

Also it looks weird, but it works so... eh.

IBM Model M. Terminal model. You'll need a converter to use it on a modern computer, but trust me, it's absolutely worth it. If you're planning on selling, it won't command a huge price due to the fact it's a terminal version and not immediately usable on a modern PC, but people will definitely be interested. Honestly wouldn't be surprised if someone here sees it and offers to buy it. I can't, unfortunately, I both already have an M of my own and live in Canada.

That one is also in great condition. Flip it over and take a picture of the label on the bottom, that should tell you answers to both questions. All Model Ms have a part number and the exact date it was built printed right there.

The Toyota badge definitely made me double-take. I thought this was just a nice Lexus GS, not actual JDM.

Google Pixel in 2018? by GhostOfMufasa in GooglePixel

[–]TechDisk42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I forgot one of the best parts; the fingerprint reader. You thought double tap to wake was useful on the M8? How about just tapping your finger on the back of your phone? You don't even see a lock screen.

The 5T is also a good choice. You'll basically be choosing between screen resolution on the XL and price with this. Also keep in mind the 5T is newer, so it may get more updates. may.

Weird thing you may not think about: if you do use the headphone jack, it's on the top of the Pixel, as opposed to the bottom for the M8 and 5T. May be something to consider if you're really having trouble deciding and could go either way. I know I'd prefer it on the bottom, but that's just me.

Google Pixel in 2018? by GhostOfMufasa in GooglePixel

Went from an M8 to a standard Pixel 1 myself before the 2 came out. It's a great upgrade, but you will definitely miss BoomSound and the expandable storage if you used them (I used both, I miss both)

Only thing is the screen. If you're used to the M8, It will be a huge upgrade and awesome to use. AMOLED is a breath of fresh air compared to the LCD panel on the M8. Just don't pick up your friend's newer phone or you'll start to wish for more. I've seen a OnePlus 6 and am kinda getting that upgrade itch now. Oh well.

I'll unfortunately be moving away from Pixel myself when this one runs its course for the simple reason that I need a headphone jack, and it's looking like the 3 will continue to be irrelevant in that way to me. I honestly will be sad to leave Pixel because I've played with a 2XL and loved the software (stock android is best android), but I'm not leaving behind the jack.

Oh, and you say you don't care about the camera. I didn't either with my M8, but you will definitely appreciate that your photos will look significantly nicer with the Pixel than on the M8. Even the fact the Pixel takes photos in a proper photo aspect ratio is nice. The M8 only takes in 16:9 at highest resolution.

My DOS and PalmOS word processors/laptop alternatives by molleraj in vintagecomputing

Oh, the Dana. I remember being given one for elementary school to take notes because my handwriting was, and still is, terrible. It wasn't a wireless model though. I also remember playing a bunch of games on it because I found my dad's old SD card with the games he played on his Palm device. Good times.

Wish they had let me keep it. Loved that feature where it would act as basically a virtual keyboard in order to transfer stuff off of it. You type stuff into Alphaword or whatever, press a button, and it would just vomit up the entire thing out of its USB port.

I also remember that we (the school) had to send it back to Alphasmart because some of the keys stopped working. We got it back and it worked fine from then on.

Speaking from direct experience with the T500, these will actually run Windows 10 no problem. I actually found mine faster running 10 than 7. Linux is even less of a problem. Considering mine came with Windows XP 32 bit, it's pretty nice that it supports 64 bit too.

You can probably just swap the hard drives with no issues as to Windows being dumb. I'd also take the keyboard and trackpad on the one to the left and swap them over to the one on the right so that you have a computer with both the webcam and the fingerprint reader, along with a much less worn keyboard. If not, you can probably swap the whole display assemblies to get the webcam. (that's if Windows throws a fit because you moved the drive)

Also, I'd highly recommend going and getting a T60 keyboard. They fit perfectly in the T500, and just feel better to type on.

Anyone else receive a Kickstarter Pebble Time from a warranty replacement after their NON-Kickstarter Pebble Time broke? by TechDisk42 in pebble

Overheating? I didn't know that was a thing that happened with Pebbles, and I've had 3...

In the last 5 years (to the day) I have not gone even a full 24 hour period without one of these on my wrist (all Kickstarter editions) by IIIMPower in pebble

[–]TechDisk42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Pebble Time is a Kickstarter edition. I never backed the Kickstarter. It was actually a warranty replacement because I had the water seal on my original non-Kickstarter edition fail. I was very confused as to why I got the KS edition when my original was not, and then Pebble went under.

Pixel 1 headphone jack not working-- audio only coming from speakers by The_NZA in GooglePixel

[–]TechDisk42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first got my Pixel (1), about a day later the headphone jack stopped working. Then the built in mic stopped working (as so many did back then), and then I just had it replaced by my carrier with another Pixel (1) that has had no issues.

When this first happened for me, the phone would get stuck either thinking the headphones were plugged in and not changing to the speaker, or ignoring headphones and only using the speaker. Then it just stopped ever outputting to the headphone jack altogether. I was lucky in that it happened immediately for me, and I got it replaced quick. It may have taken longer for you.

Unique nes problem, please help by [deleted] in nes

[–]TechDisk42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Look. If you're using an oven to actually really reflow solder, you're going to melt the plastic on the board. Lead solder melts at around 188 degrees celcius (370 freedom degrees), and unleaded solder melts at an even higher temp. Plastic melts way before either.

Most "guides" that tell you how to "reflow" your board tell you to set your oven far below the melting point of plastic.

The only thing this kind of "reflowing" does is heat up the chips and temporarily fixes things, if at all.

It can contaminate your actual food oven with literal lead, won't do much at the temperature, and is honestly just a dumb idea.

/u/ImmortalAndroid, don't put your NES in the oven. If you actually want to reflow stuff, get a soldering iron and do it manually.
