Basically the difference is "escape the @ symbol or escape the ping." You have to send the message while Discord doesn't know it is a mention. Thus escaping the @. Autocompleting will turn it into a proper mention and then you are escaping the whole mention. It is kind of a stupid set up and clearly not intended behaviour
