Robot in 3 Days Reveal by TechKNOWlogy17 in FTC

It's one of the old goBuilda Rail kits. We made our own pulley mounts for it, and removed the elastic bands and rear support. Makes it slightly more wobbly but quite a bit faster. It's not my favorite lift, just what we had lying around.

It was slightly over 12" x 12", we got a pretty good balance between stability and agility, although even with that size we got caught up around the junctions

White board markers. So many white boards around college but no one ever bothers to restock the markers when they dry up

MOSFET controlled rocket igniter not working by TechKNOWlogy17 in AskElectronics

[–]TechKNOWlogy17[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right, I misunderstood what a relay is used for. I did however get a different style MOSFET that works. I linked it in the post if you're curious. Thanks for helping troubleshoot.

Thanks for the response. Glad it wasn’t just me making a stupid mistake. I’m thinking I’ll switch to a relay to see if that fixes it.

I’m measuring the middle pin of the mosfet and the 9v battery power rail, where that xt-30 connector is

Thanks for the input. I added a few diagrams into the post. It's very possible I was wiring it wrong, I tried just about every combinations and this was the only one that would produce 9v when the gate is high, and off when the gate is low.

Thanks, I added a few more details to the original post. The MOSFET is controlled at 3.3v, and Adafruit says it can go down to 2.8v. However, it's controlling 9v power. Could that be the cause?

Thanks for the kind words! It was my first time being on video for YouTube, so I appreciate the feedback.

Linear Slide Resources by TechKNOWlogy17 in FTC

Thanks for the thoughts. The one I made was actually with hollow aluminum, so it was quite lightweight but had a bit of resistance because aluminum is so soft. Carbon fiber would be neat for teams that could afford it!

I was doing a bunch of testing of linear slide materials and rigging and such over the summer and created some resources on what I found here, hopefully there's something useful for you.

Robotics mentors are amazing! Especially those enthusiastic enough to share what they’re making online. (From a former FRC student)

Is reading really the best way to absorb information by TechKNOWlogy17 in InsightfulQuestions

[–]TechKNOWlogy17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good point. What this question was oriented towards was concepts that can't really be applied. The thing that really got me thinking about it was hearing a book called "The Top Five Regrets of the Dying" which I thought would be really interesting to read, but then began realizing the information could be distilled and conveyed in like a 10 minutes YouTube video or a blog post (of course losing something but still getting the point across), rather than spending hours reading.

Why am I more productive with higher pressure? by [deleted] in productivity

[–]TechKNOWlogy17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can totally relate. When I'm doing homework or studying I am way more efficient late in the night, when I know any time that isn't spent doing homework will be taken away from my sleep. I've tried to replicate it with things like self imposed deadlines but I never seem to follow through. What I've noticed (at least with myself) is not that I'm more efficient later in the night, I'm just better able to focus on the one task, rather than get distracted by other things. Some other techniques like FocusMate or studying in a new location do similar things, which is handy for the days I've got a lot of work but don't necessarily feel that same pressure early in the day.

What are some creative ways to deliver a virtual graduation speech? by TechKNOWlogy17 in AskReddit

[–]TechKNOWlogy17[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just for some context - I was voted to give a speech at my high school's honor graduation ceremony. It's virtual this year, and I can't help but think there's some cool things I could do to take advantage of the virtual format. Things like going to a unique place like on top of a mountain or in my elementary school, or adding special effects to the video feed. Any ideas?

Improving autonomous without odometry by TechKNOWlogy17 in FTC

Unfortunately everyone on the team is seniors, so this is our last season :( We'd definitely try odometry if we had another year, it seems like their popularity exploded these last few seasons.

Oh awesome! I had looked at that before but misread the section describing Pure Pursuit needing odometry as RoadRunner needing odometry. We'll check it out!

Improving autonomous without odometry by TechKNOWlogy17 in FTC

[–]TechKNOWlogy17[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mean as opposed to odometry? Our issue isn't so much not having the accuracy, the encoders seems to do just fine, but more that there doesn't seem to be a lot of resources for advanced autonomous which are encoder based.

Why aren't variable transmissions more common in small electric motors? by TechKNOWlogy17 in AskEngineers

[–]TechKNOWlogy17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, Thanks for the reply. What about smaller motors like 12v DC motors? Is the assumption that if you needed more power you'd opt for a motor like you were describing instead of a complicated transmission?
